Despite its proven effectiveness in treating liver failure, liver transplantation is often impractical due to its high surgical risks involved and the limited availability of donor organs. Blood purification technologies used in non-bioartificial liver (NBAL) systems have improved clinical cure rates, but they do not substitute for the complex biosynthesis, detoxification, metabolism, and biological transformation roles of the liver. To overcome these challenges brought by NBAL systems, bioartificial liver (BAL) systems have been developed with repeated optimization of both hepatocyte sources and bioreactors to emulate a "fully functional liver".

Mixed infection refers to the presence of multiple strains within one host, while heteroresistance denotes the coexistence of drug-susceptible and drug-resistant strains or genotypes. Mixed infections and heteroresistance with can complicate drug resistance diagnosis, treatment options, and transmission inference. We conducted a population-based genomic epidemiological study of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in Shanghai, China, between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2018, to evaluate the prevalence and impact of mixed infection and heteroresistance on MDR-TB diagnosis and treatment outcomes.

Senile osteoporosis (SOP) primarily arises from an imbalance between bone formation and bone resorption. The tightly regulated coupling between osteoblasts and osteoclasts limits the therapeutic efficacy of conventional anti-resorptive agents and anabolic agents. Anti-aging therapy offers a potential strategy to modify the senescent phenotype of bone-associated cells, restore cellular function, and re-establish homeostasis between bone resorption and formation.

Carbon dioxide (CO), the most notorious greenhouse gas responsible for global warming and ocean acidification, could persist in the atmosphere for 50 to 200 years, posing substantial long-term environmental challenges. However, its environmental fate remains not fully clear. This study reveals a previously unrecognized silica-driven CO reduction pathway in ubiquitous water microdroplets, enabling the efficient conversion of CO primarily into formic acid, along with other C and C products such as methanol, acetic acid, and ethanol, under ambient conditions.

Ion exchange membranes (IEMs) are critical components in osmotic energy conversion. However, traditional IEMs suffer from disordered nanochannels due to the lack of precise control over the content and distribution of ionic groups, resulting in an inherent trade-off between ion selectivity and conductivity. One promising strategy is constructing high-density ion channels with minimal ionic groups.

This paper primarily addresses the challenges posed by the difficulties in directly measuring the fusion width at the bottom of the weld and in real-time monitoring of the penetration state during the groove welding process. It focuses on the research of online penetration state monitoring technology, which utilizes multi-modal signals such as sound and image during the welding process. The multimodal network proposed in this paper, SIMNet, first employs the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) to convert the original sound signal into the time-frequency domain for preliminary feature extraction.

Uveitis is an inflammatory disorder of the eye that causes severe vision loss. In autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) has been indicated to play a significant pathogenic role that depends on cellular immune responses. Emerging evidence from both experimental models and clinical studies of uveitis suggests that GM-CSF plays a far more complex role than its originally described function as a hematopoietic growth factor that promotes the differentiation of granulocytes and macrophages from progenitor cells.
