Progressive loss of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) is the pathophysiological basis for aortic aneurysm and dissection (AAD), a life-threatening disease, but the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. Sirtuin 6 (SIRT6), a class III histone deacetylase, is critical for maintenance of VSMC homeostasis and prevention of vascular remodeling-related diseases. In this study, we investigated the role of VSMC SIRT6 in AAD and the molecular mechanism.

Cathelicidin LL-37, an antimicrobial peptide (AMP) of the innate immune system, wards off bacterial infections. Recent research has identified plenty of biological functions of AMPs beyond their antimicrobial activity, including antioxidant, self-renewal, and procollagen properties, making them valuable for antiaging products. In this study, we assessed the antiphotoaging potential of cathelicidin LL-37 fragments and KR-12 analogs using human immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT) and human dermal fibroblasts (HDF).

Populus euphratica glycine-rich RNA-binding protein 2 (PeGRP2) has been previously shown to destabilize target mRNAs and negatively regulates salt tolerance of poplar. This study aimed to explore the post-translational regulation of PeGRP2 in the salt-resistant poplar. PeGRP2 was demonstrated to interact with more axillary growth 2 (PeMAX2), an F-box leucine-rich repeat protein.

Assessing adolescent body image is crucial for mental health interventions, yet traditional methods suffer from limited dimensional coverage, poor dynamic tracking, and weak ecological validity. To address these gaps, this study proposes a multidimensional evaluation using large language models (LLMs) and compares its criterion validity against a dictionary-based method and expert ratings. We defined four dimensions-perception, positive attitude, negative attitude, behavior-by reviewing the body-image literature and built a validated dictionary through expert ratings and iterative refinement.

: Caffeine (CA) exhibits promising reparative effects against UV-induced skin aging, but the specific mechanisms, including differences in gene and metabolite regulation and the involvement of signaling pathways, are still insufficiently elucidated. : This study is on the repairing capability of CA to ultraviolet (UV)-induced skin aging and explores the ferroptosis pathway through in vitro cell experiments, a UV-aged mouse skin model, and molecular docking. : CA enhanced the vitality and proliferation of HaCaT cells, delayed cell aging, reduced reactive oxygen species levels, increased mitochondrial membrane potential, and activated the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor pathway, as well as repaired UVB-induced cytoskeletal disorders.

Exploring and controlling the quantum effect of a neuron provides an alternative possibility to modulate its biological functions. Based on the conjecture that vertebrate neural signals operate in terahertz (THz) band, this paper further investigates how quantum effects of a neuron influence the transmission of neural signal. Our main hypothesis is that one mode of a node of Ranvier can be modeled as a quantized cavity.

Background: One-third of all lung cancer cases globally are reported in China. This study evaluated the symptom management efficacy of an electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePRO)-based intervention for postoperative symptoms like pain and psychological distress after lung cancer surgery.

Methods: We included lung cancer surgery patients (April 2022-October 2023; age, 18-75 years) with ECOG scores of 0-2 and expected survival of >6 months and randomized them into control and intervention groups.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of an audience's regulatory focus on the persuasive effect of different pro-vaccine messages. Study 1 (N = 169) examined attitude changes among audiences with different regulatory focus after reading pro-vaccine messages, and Study 2 (N = 201) added the exploration of message persuasiveness and vaccination intentions as well. The results of Study 1 and Study 2 showed that both high promotion fucus and high prevention focus could facilitate the attitude change elicited by messages emphasizing vaccine safety, official position and credibility.

Objective: Serum AQP4 antibody (AQP4-IgG) is the causative antibody of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) but AQP4-IgG in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has been seldom studied. We aimed to explore the clinical value and influencing factors of CSF AQP4-IgG in NMOSD.

Methods: In this study, we screened 137 patients with NMOSD diagnosed according to the 2015 International Consensus Diagnostic Criteria (IPND criteria).

Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) are essential for promoting immune responses against tumours. However, the impact of TLS score and its maturation stage on the prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients has not yet been clarified. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between TLS score and its maturation stage and CRC prognosis through a retrospective study.

Corneal neovascularization (CoNV) is a major global contributor to visual impairment, significantly affecting patients' vision and overall quality of life. Traditional treatment modalities often prove inadequate, constrained by limited bioavailability, and their extended use may result in serious complications, including secondary infections, glaucoma, and cataracts. However, recent progress in nanomaterials has led to promising therapeutic approaches for CoNV therapy.

Oxidative stress, an imbalance between the body's oxidative and antioxidant systems, contributes markedly to the development of numerous ocular surface diseases, particularly dry eye disease (DED). Effective elimination or reduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) can halt disease progression and alleviate symptoms. This study presents an innovative thermoresponsive, metal-free carbon nanodot (CD) hydrogel, termed F-CD hydrogel, which exhibits potent neutralization capabilities against multiple free radicals, including OH·, O·, and ·DPPH.

Objectives: To explore the effects of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) at the bilateral acupoints Neiguan (PC6) and Jianshi (PC5) on heart rate variability (HRV) and inflammatory factors in frail elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery under general anesthesia.

Methods: A total of 78 frail elderly patients undergoing elective laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery were randomized into the TEAS group (39 patients, with 2 patients dropping out) and the control group (39 patients, with 1 patient dropping out). In the TEAS group, TEAS was applied to the bilateral PC6 and PC5 from 30 min before anesthesia induction until the end of the surgery.

Photothermal therapy (PTT), a vanguard strategy in cancer/ocular neovascularization treatment, has attracted considerable attention owing to its precision, controllability, high efficacy, and minimal side effects. Nevertheless, its inherent limitations necessitate innovative solutions. One promising strategy is to develop reagents with enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency under long-wavelength laser irradiation.

Vascular aging and dysfunction are significant contributors to age-related cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. In particular, aging impacts small vessels, damaging vascular integrity leading to leakage events and inflammation, which can be further exacerbated by environmental factors. Here, we generate and evaluate an isogenic endothelial cell and pericyte venule-like co-culture model of microvasculature under perfusion with male aged human serum over 4 days.
