Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder associated with age. A wealth of evidence indicates that the amyloid β (Aβ) aggregates result from dyshomeostasis between Aβ production and clearance, which plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of AD. Consequently, therapies targeting Aβ reduction represent a promising strategy for AD intervention.

The prevalence of trace elements from industrial and traffic activities poses potential health risks through inhalation exposure. Prior studies have focused on trace elements in water, food, and dust, and less attention has been paid to their occurrence in fine particulate matter (PM). In this study, 1424 air samples were collected from three districts (Nanshan, Longgang, and Yantian) in Shenzhen from 2016 to 2021, and we analyzed the concentrations, temporal trends, and spatial distributions of PM and associated trace elements.

Individuals with genetic elimination of (mixed lineage kinase domain like pseudokinase) exhibit an increased susceptibility to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer disease (AD). However, the mechanism is not yet fully understood. Here, we observed significant compromise in macroautophagy/autophagy in the brains of knockout (KO) mice, as evidenced by the downregulation of BECN1/Beclin1 and ULK1 (unc-51 like autophagy activating kinase 1).

Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is a prevalent type of hospital-acquired infection, affecting approximately 15% to 25% of patients with urinary catheters. Long-term use of the catheter can lead to colonization of microorganisms and biofilm formation, and may develop into bacterial CAUTI. However, the frequent replacement of catheters in clinical settings can result in tissue damage, inflammation, ulceration, and additional complications, causing discomfort and pain for patients.

Background: For medical diagnosis, clinicians typically begin with a patient's chief concerns, followed by questions about symptoms and medical history, physical examinations, and requests for necessary auxiliary examinations to gather comprehensive medical information. This complex medical investigation process has yet to be modeled by existing artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies.
Objective: The aim of this study was to develop an AI-driven medical inquiry assistant for clinical diagnosis that provides inquiry recommendations by simulating clinicians' medical investigating logic via reinforcement learning.

As the most common endocrine cancer, thyroid cancer (TC) has sharply increased globally over the past three decades. The growing incidence of TC might be counted by genetics, radiation, iodine, autoimmune disease, and exposure to environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), being typical EDCs, have been widely utilized in plastics, electronics, furniture, and textiles as flame retardants since the 1980s, and research has indicated a significant correlation between their exposure and the risk of TC.

Rapid and accurate identification of Salmonella enterica serotypes Typhi and Paratyphi (A, B and C), the causal agents of enteric fever, is critical for timely treatment, case management and evaluation of health policies in low and middle-income countries where the disease still remains a serious public health problem. The present study describes the development of a multiplex assay (EFMAtyping) for simultaneous identification of pathogens causing typhoid and paratyphoid fever in a single reaction by the MeltArray approach, which could be finished within 2.5 h.

Short-term ambient fine particulate matter (PM) exposure has been related to an increased risk of myocardial infarction (MI) death, but which PM constituents are associated with MI death and to what extent remain unclear. We aimed to explore the associations of short-term exposure to PM constituents with MI death and evaluate excess mortality. We conducted a time-stratified case-crossover study on 237,492 MI decedents in Jiangsu province, China during 2015-2021.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is a common form of light pollution worldwide, and the intensity, timing, duration, and wavelength of light exposure can affect biological rhythms, which can lead to metabolic, reproductive, and immune dysfunctions and consequently, host-pathogen interactions. Insect vector-borne diseases are a global problem that needs to be addressed, and ALAN plays an important role in disease transmission by affecting the habits and physiological functions of vector organisms. In this work, we describe the mechanisms by which ALAN affects host physiology and biochemistry, host-parasite interactions, and vector-borne viruses and propose preventive measures for related infectious diseases to minimize the effects of artificial light on vector-borne diseases.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) has an increasing prevalence, complicated pathogenesis and no effective cure. Emerging evidences show that flavonoid compounds such as xanthohumol (Xn) could play an important role as a dietary supplement or traditional Chinese herbal medicine in the management of diseases such as AD. This study aims to analyze the target molecules of Xn in the prevention and treatment of AD, and its potential mechanism from the perspective of metabolites.

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has emerged as a promising tool for monitoring the spread of COVID-19, as SARS-CoV-2 can be shed in the faeces of infected individuals, even in the absence of symptoms. This study aimed to optimize a prediction model for estimating COVID-19 infection rates based on SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentrations in wastewater, and reveal the infection trends and variant diversification in Shenzhen, China following the lifting of a strict COVID-19 strategy. Faecal samples (n = 4337) from 1204 SARS-CoV-2 infected individuals hospitalized in a designated hospital were analysed to obtain Omicron variant-specific faecal shedding dynamics.

c-FLIP functions as a dual regulator of apoptosis and inflammation, yet its implications in Zika virus (ZIKV) infection remain partially understood, especially in the context of ZIKV-induced congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) where both apoptosis and inflammation play pivotal roles. Our findings demonstrate that c-FLIP promotes ZIKV infection in placental cells and myeloid-derived macrophages, involving inflammation and caspase-8/3-mediated apoptosis. Moreover, our observations reveal that c-FLIP augments ZIKV infection in multiple tissues, including blood cell, spleen, uterus, testis, and the brain of mice.
