Introduction: In this study, we investigated the local epidemiology and pathogen spectrum of acute respiratory infections caused by common respiratory viruses other than influenza virus (IFV) and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in Fujian Province, China, from September 2020 to December 2023.

Methods: Samples negative for IFV and SARS-CoV-2 were randomly selected from individuals presenting with influenza-like illness. These samples were tested for seven common respiratory viruses-human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV), human parainfluenza virus (HPIV), human adenovirus (HAdV), rhinovirus (RV), human metapneumovirus, human coronavirus (HCoV), and human bocavirus.

Residues of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in drinking water pose significant public health risks. To assess these residues in water, this study developed a solid-phase extraction combined with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method (SPE-UPLC-MS/MS) for the simultaneous quantitative determination of 98 PPCP residues in drinking water. By optimizing the pretreatment method and analysis conditions, the method exhibits excellent linearity, with all PPCPs showing correlation coefficients () greater than 0.

Biol Trace Elem Res

February 2025

Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Centre for Endemic Disease Control, Harbin Medical University, Heilongjiang Province 150081, Harbin City, People's Republic of China.

This study aims to assess the applicability of the serum iodine (SI) standards proposed by the WHO and other renowned laboratories for the Chinese population. Additionally, it seeks to establish reference intervals (RIs) for SI in Chinese adults and conduct a risk assessment between serum iodine concentration (SIC) and the development of thyroid diseases. This study enrolled 3138 adults aged 18-60 years from six provinces in China.

Accurate differentiation and identification of flea species are essential for both basic and applied research on fleas, as well as for the diagnosis of flea-borne diseases. However, distinguishing between flea species can be challenging, especially among those with minimal morphological differences. Therefore, some scholars have suggested the necessity of comprehensive revisions to the classification of fleas, incorporating morphological, molecular, and phylogenetic data.

  • This study analyzed infections causing diarrhea in over 144,000 children in China from 2014 to 2023, focusing on adenoviruses and rotaviruses.
  • The results showed that rotavirus A had a higher infection rate (11.81%) compared to adenovirus (6.41%), but adenovirus infections surpassed rotavirus infections in 2021 and 2023.
  • The study observed significant fluctuations in infection rates over the decade, especially a sharp decline during 2020-2023, and highlighted the influence of environmental factors like temperature and sunshine on infection rates, which changed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variations affect the efficiency of the electron transport chain and production of reactive oxygen species, contributing to carcinogenesis. The D-loop region of mtDNA has emerged as a variation hotspot region in human neoplasia; however, the potential contribution of these variations in breast cancer risk prediction remains unknown. We investigated the relationship between germline single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the entire D-loop region and breast cancer risk in Chinese women.

Department of Radiotherapy, Cancer Center, The First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University, China; Department of Radiotherapy, National Regional Medical Center, Binhai Campus of the First Affiliated Hospital, Fujian Medical University, China; Key Laboratory of Radiation Biology of Fujian

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines how fatigue in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients is related to weekly changes in body composition during radiotherapy, using assessments at multiple time points (T0-T7).
  • - Results show that fatigue peaked around the fifth week, with significant body composition changes starting as early as the second week; weight and other body composition measures were positively linked to fatigue levels.
  • - The findings suggest that monitoring weight and body composition loss can help independently assess fatigue development in NPC patients, particularly in those with specific demographic and treatment-related factors.

Article Synopsis
  • * Conducted from January 2021 to June 2022, the study followed 105 NPC patients weekly, assessing fatigue through the Piper Fatigue Scale and nutritional status using the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) alongside other metrics.
  • * Results indicated that fatigue peaked in the fifth week of treatment, with higher PG-SGA scores correlating weakly with increased fatigue levels; however, PG-SGA emerged as a better predictor for future fatigue than body composition metrics when adjusted for anxiety

In this work, a colorimetric aptasensor based on magnetic beads (MBs), gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and Horseradish Peroxidase (HRP) was prepared for the detection of mucin 1 (MUC1). Complementary DNA of the MUC1 aptamer (Apt) immobilized on the MBs was combined with the prepared AuNPs-Apt-HRP complex (AuNPs@Apt-HRP). In the presence of MUC1, it specifically bound to Apt, resulting in the detachment of gold nanoparticles from the MBs.
