Soft  tissue sarcomas (STS) are heterogeneous malignancies with high recurrence rates (33-39%) post-surgery, necessitating improved prognostic tools. This study proposes a fusion model integrating deep transfer learning and radiomics from MRI to predict postoperative STS recurrence. Axial T2-weighted fat-suppressed imaging (TWI) of 803 STS patients from two institutions was retrospectively collected and divided into training (n = 527), internal validation (n = 132), and external validation (n = 144) cohorts.

Background: Nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) is the most commonly reported foodborne gastrointestinal infection and ranks among the top three causes of foodborne bacterial outbreaks in China.

Methods: This study analyzed NTS data from the Foodborne Disease Surveillance System in China from 2013 to 2022 to summarize epidemiological features and assess reporting rate changes. We employed joinpoint regression model to calculate the annual percentage change in NTS reporting rate, sex reporting rate, as well as rural-urban reporting rate.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a hepatic metabolic syndrome arising from lipid metabolic imbalance, with its prevalence increasing globally. In this study, we observed a significant up-regulation of interferon regulatory factor 8 (IRF8) in the liver of NAFLD model mice and patients. Overexpression of IRF8 induced lipid accumulation in the mouse primary hepatocytes.

Background: Although the information on the validation status of electronic sphygmomanometer (ES) devices in use in health care institutions and households is much more clinically relevant than that of ES models available on the market, it remains insufficient.

Methods: A national survey was conducted across all administrative regions of mainland China to assess the validation status of ESs. Fifty-eight cities were selected with stratification by municipality, provincial capital, and other cities, and health care institutions and households in each city were chosen by convenience to identify ES devices in use according to the study protocol.

Listeriosis is a relatively rare but severe foodborne disease, which has significant public health concern of persons with underlying conditions and pregnant women. This study aimed to estimate the morbidity, mortality, and fatality rates of listeriosis over a 10-year period and clarify the epidemiological features of the pathogen in Beijing, China, based on voluntary reporting of sentinel surveillance. A total of 228 listeriosis cases were reported with annual morbidity rate of 1.

Existing techniques for pacing the right ventricle and providing cardiac resynchronization therapy through biventricular pacing are not effective in restoring damage to the conduction system. Therefore, the need for new pacing modalities and techniques with more sensible designs and algorithms is justified. Although the benefits of conduction system pacing (CSP), which mainly include His bundle pacing (HBP) and left bundle branch area pacing (LBBAP), are evident in patients who require conduction system recuperation, the critical criteria for left CSP remain unclear, and the roles of different pacing modalities of CSP for cardiac resynchronization are not definite.

Beta-AlO-based solid-state sodium metal batteries are some of the best options for large-scale energy storage systems because of their high energy density, high-level safety, and low cost. Nevertheless, their room-/low-temperature operation remains challenging due to low ionic conductivity of Beta-AlO electrolyte and weak solid-solid contact of the Na/Beta-AlO interface. Herein, an integrated strategy was developed via electrolyte optimization and interface regulation, in which Cu as a stabilizing agent was incorporated into Beta-AlO to improve density and ionic conductivity and the InS interface layer was introduced between the Na anode and solid electrolyte to induce the in situ formation of a mixed conductive layer (Na-In alloy and NaS).

Impaired β cell function is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes (T2D), but the underlying cellular signaling machineries that regulate β cell function remain unknown. Here, we identify that the interleukin-22 receptor subunit alpha 1 (IL-22RA1), known as a co-receptor for IL-22, is downregulated in human and mouse T2D β cells. Mice with β cell Il22ra1 knockout (Il22ra1βKO) exhibit defective insulin secretion and impaired glucose tolerance after being fed a high-fat diet (HFD) or an HFD/low dose of streptozotocin (STZ).

Chest X-ray is widely used to diagnose lung diseases. Due to the demand for accelerating analysis and interpretation to reduce the workload of radiologists, there has been a growing interest in building automated systems of chest X-ray abnormality localization. However, fully supervised methods usually require well-trained radiologists to annotate bounding boxes manually, which is labor-intensive and time-consuming.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to create induced microglia-like cells (iMG) from stem cells in a controlled environment and enhance their functionality by coculturing them with retinal organoids.
  • Researchers established iMG production conditions, stimulated these cells, and compared their characteristics with a standard microglia cell line (HMC3) to understand their immune responses and maturation.
  • The results showed that iMG closely resemble primary human microglia in immune functions, and further maturation with retinal organoids (CC-iMG) led to significant improvements in their cellular activities and properties, potentially aiding future research and therapies related to microglial functions.*

Objectives: Lymph node metastasis (LNM) is a pivotal determinant that influences the treatment strategies and prognosis for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) patients. This study aims to establish and verify a deep learning (DL) radiomics model for the prediction of LNM in OPSCCs using contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT).

Methods: A retrospective analysis included 279 OPSCC patients from 3 institutions.

Background: Clinical trials are vital for developing new therapies but can also delay drug development. Efficient trial data management, optimized trial protocol, and accurate patient identification are critical for reducing trial timelines. Natural language processing (NLP) has the potential to achieve these objectives.

Article Synopsis
  • TMEM52B is a newly discovered tumor-related gene that is often overexpressed in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), correlating with more advanced cancer stages, higher recurrence rates, and shorter survival times.
  • Reducing TMEM52B expression decreases NPC cell growth, movement, and invasion, indicating its importance in cancer progression.
  • The gene produces two isoforms (TMEM52B-P18 and TMEM52B-P20) that differ in location and function; while both support cancer growth, TMEM52B-P20 specifically enhances metastasis by degrading E-cadherin, suggesting that targeting these isoforms might help develop new cancer treatments.

Drug-loaded porous membranes have been deemed to be effective physicochemical barriers to separate postoperative adhesion-prone tissues in tendon healing. However, cell viability and subsequent tissue regeneration might be severely interfered with the unrestricted release and the locally excessive concentration of anti-inflammatory drugs. Herein, we report a double-layered membrane with sustained and uni-directional drug delivery features to prevent peritendinous adhesion without hampering the healing outcome.

Fulvic acid (FA) is a representative photosensitive dissolved organic matter (DOM) compound that occurs naturally in paddy soils. In this study, the effect of a FA + nitrate treatment (0, 4 and 8 mg/L FA + 20 mmol/L nitrate) on denitrification and As(III) immobilization in flooded paddy soils was assessed under dark and intermittently illuminated conditions (12 h light+12 h dark). The FA input stimulated denitrification in illuminated soils (~100 % of nitrate removal within 6 days) compared to dark conditions (~92 % nitrate removal after 6 days).
