Genome Biol

July 2020

Institute of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Freie Universität Berlin, Laboratory of RNA Biochemistry, Takustrasse 6, 14195, Berlin, Germany.

Background: 3'-Untranslated regions (3'UTRs) play crucial roles in mRNA metabolism, such as by controlling mRNA stability, translation efficiency, and localization. Intriguingly, in some genes the 3'UTR is longer than their coding regions, pointing to additional, unknown functions. Here, we describe a protein-coding function of 3'UTRs upon frameshift-inducing alternative splicing in more than 10% of human and mouse protein-coding genes.

Graphene, a single atomic layer of sp2 hybridized carbon, is a promising material for future devices due to its excellent optical and electrical properties. Nevertheless, for practical applications, it is essential to deposit patterned metals on graphene in the micro and nano-meter scale in order to inject electrodes or modify the 2D film electrical properties. However, conventional methods for depositing patterned metals such as lift-off or etching leave behind contamination.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2020

State Key Laboratory for Oxo Synthesis and Selective Oxidation (OSSO), Suzhou Research Institute of LICP, Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics (LICP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Lanzhou, 730000, China.

A sensitive amine-responsive disassembly of self-assembled Au -Cu double salts was observed and its utilization for the synergistic catalysis was enlightened. Investigation of the disassembly of [Au(NHC) ][CuI ] revealed the contribution of Cu-assisted ligand exchange of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) by amine in [Au(NHC) ] and the capacity of [CuI ] on the oxidative step. By integrating the implicative information coded in the responsive behavior and inherent catalytic functions of d metal complexes, a catalyst for the oxidative carbonylation of amines was developed.

Electrochemical reduction of CO to useful chemicals has been actively pursued for closing the carbon cycle and preventing further deterioration of the environment/climate. Since CO reduction reaction (CORR) at a cathode is always paired with the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at an anode, the overall efficiency of electrical energy to chemical fuel conversion must consider the large energy barrier and sluggish kinetics of OER, especially in widely used electrolytes, such as the pH-neutral CO-saturated 0.5 M KHCO OER in such electrolytes mostly relies on noble metal (Ir- and Ru-based) electrocatalysts in the anode.

Universal Bipolar Host Materials for Blue, Green, and Red Phosphorescent OLEDs with Excellent Efficiencies and Small-Efficiency Roll-Off.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

July 2019

State Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials and Devices, Center for Aggregation-Induced Emission , South China University of Technology, Guangzhou 510640 , China.

Host materials are indispensable for the fabrication of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with phosphorescent emitters, but high-quality host materials that can efficiently and simultaneously function in blue, green, and red phosphorescent OLEDs (PHOLEDs) are much rare. In this work, four bipolar materials are developed using carbazole and 9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine as hole-transporting groups, pyridine as electron-transporting groups, and biphenyl and -methylbiphenyl as π-spacers. The crystal and electronic structures indicate that these materials have highly twisted conformations, which endow them with aggregation-induced emission features, intramolecular charge transfer processes, wide energy band gaps, and high triplet energies.

Nature

June 2019

State Key Laboratory for Mesoscopic Physics, Collaborative Innovation Center of Quantum Matter, School of Physics, Peking University, Beijing, China.

The development of two-dimensional (2D) materials has opened up possibilities for their application in electronics, optoelectronics and photovoltaics, because they can provide devices with smaller size, higher speed and additional functionalities compared with conventional silicon-based devices. The ability to grow large, high-quality single crystals for 2D components-that is, conductors, semiconductors and insulators-is essential for the industrial application of 2D devices. Atom-layered hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), with its excellent stability, flat surface and large bandgap, has been reported to be the best 2D insulator.
