Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are a class of systemic insecticides widely used in agriculture owing to their high efficacy and selectivity. As one of the most globally consumed beverages, tea may represent a potential dietary source of pesticide residues. However, limited research has examined NEO contamination in tea and its implications for human exposure, highlighting the need for further investigation.

The Key Laboratory of the Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions for Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine in Senile Diseases Control, Institute of Translational Medicine, School of Medicine, Yangzhou University, Yangzhou, People's Republic of China.

Newly emerging or "re-emerging" influenza viruses have been regarded as a huge global threat to human public health. However, there are few reports of human deaths caused by newly emerging influenza viruses derived from pigs and poultry. Here, we described the clinical and virological features of a fatal encephalitis caused by a novel H3N2 reassortant virus generated from swine H3N2 and human H7N9 viruses.

We have developed a tailored next-generation sequencing (tNGS) panel, employing our innovative UMPlex™ primer design workflow, to enhance pathogen identification in clinical diagnostics. Through iterative experimentation and rigorous validation, we refined the primer design by excluding those with insufficient specificity or efficiency. To mitigate amplification challenges arising from pathogenic mutations, we implemented a strategy of using a minimum of two primer pairs per pathogen, ensuring redundancy and robust detection.

2, 2', 4, 4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47), one of the most abundant and toxic congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), has been implicated in thyroid disorders, but its thyroid toxicity in human thyroid cells and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Given the pivotal role of the V-Raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B (BRAF) and the downstream mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK)- signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway in cell proliferation, differentiation, cell cycle and thyroid functions, in this study, we constructed BRAF knockout (BRAF-KO) and overexpression (BRAF-OE) cell models using Nthy-ori 3-1 cells, to evaluate the effect of BDE-47 on human thyroid cells and explore the potential mechanisms. Our results showed that exposure to BDE-47 resulted in reduced cell viability, Gap 2 (G2)/mitosis (M) phase cell cycle arrest, enhanced cell migration, and decreased cell invasion.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the implementation of associated non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) profoundly altered the epidemiology of seasonal influenza viruses. To investigate these changes, we analyzed influenza-like illness samples in Shenzhen, China, across six influenza seasons spanning 2018 to 2024. Influenza activity declined markedly during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic compared with the pre-pandemic period but returned to or even exceeded pre-pandemic levels in the post-pandemic era.

Diabetes Obes Metab

September 2025

Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Modern Toxicology, Shenzhen Medical Key Discipline of Health Toxicology (2020-2024), Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Shenzhen, China.

Aim: The rising global prevalence of obesity has accelerated the incidence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) representing its progressive and life-threatening phenotype. Despite its clinical urgency, no pharmacotherapy is currently approved for NASH. AdipoRon, an orally active adiponectin receptor agonist, exhibits dual regulatory effects on glucose/lipid homeostasis alongside anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Decorative cosmetics and skin care products contribute significantly to short-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylates exposure.

J Hazard Mater

September 2025

School of Materials Science and Engineering, Beihang University, Beijing, China; School of Public Health, Southeast University, Nanjing, China. Electronic address:

Research on dermal exposure of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in personal care products is limited. Here, we investigated the permeation of 14 PFAS using in vitro 3D-human skin equivalents (3D-HSE). Results revealed that perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) exhibited the highest cumulative permeation, while perfluorotetradecanoic acid (PFTeDA) showed the lowest.

Li exposure is becoming a new prominent major issue in energy-environment-health field. However, its reproductive health risk has been less explored. In this study, we find that exposure to 28-fold REED (really environmental exposure dose) of Li is enough to induce mouse miscarriage by altering the structures and functions of placenta.

The surviving brain tissue undergoes secondary degeneration long after an ischemic stroke. Cathepsin B plays dual roles as both a scavenger and an executor. Using a mouse model of ischemic stroke, we specifically investigated the mechanism by which inhibiting Cathepsin B with CA074 methyl ester (CA-074Me) during the chronic phase of stroke exerts a protective effect.

Institute of Brain Disease and Data Analysis, College of Life Sciences and Oceanography, Shenzhen University, 518060, Guangdong, PR China. Electronic address:

N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) are a class of calcium-permeable ion channel that are extensively distributed throughout the body, composed of various subunits. The presence of diverse ligands and subcellular localizations of the receptors confers biased signaling and distinct functional roles. Activation of the NMDARs induces calcium influx, which plays a pivotal role in neurotransmitter release, synaptic plasticity, and intracellular signaling.
