Background: Although several regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) algorithms have been reported, clinical data confirming their effectiveness and safety are limited. We have developed a novel RCA algorithm applicable to extensive continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) settings. The aims of this study were to evaluate the incidence of calcium and citrate abnormalities that necessitated human intervention when using this algorithm during RCA and to identify the optimal values of the coefficients and in the equations.

Endothelial cell dysfunction is a fundamental injury of atherosclerosis cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), closely linked to ferroptosis, which is a novel type of cell death induced by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation. Several clinical trials have suggested that empagliflozin, a selective inhibitor of sodium glucose co-transporter 2, reduces the risk of hospitalization for heart failure and cardiovascular death in patients with type 2 diabetes. However, little is known about the mechanism of EMPA in endothelial cell ferroptosis in ASCVD.

Background: Computed tomography is an inadequate method for detecting myocardial focal scar (MFS) due to its moderate density resolution, which is insufficient for distinguishing MFS from artificial beam-hardening (BH). Virtual monochromatic images (VMIs) of dual-energy coronary computed tomography angiography (DECCTA) provide a variety of diagnostic information with significant potential for detecting myocardial lesions. The aim of this study was to assess whether radiomics analysis in VMIs of DECCTA can help distinguish MFS from BH.

Objectives: To develop a radiomics model for identifying fresh or old vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) from CT images, thereby assisting physicians in making more effective decisions.

Methods: Patients with VCFs who underwent both CT and MRI within one week were retrospectively enrolled from June 2018 to February 2023. VCFs were categorized as subgroups according to compression grades (mild, moderate or severe) or morphology types (wedge-shaped, biconcave or crush).

Zero-valent iron (ZVI) is a solid reductant that can react with a wide array of contaminants; however, its effectiveness is significantly reduced by the surface passivation layer formed on its surface. This study introduces mechanochemical depassivation to revitalize passivated ZVI and restore its reactivity. The method is exemplified through mechanical milling to depassivate ZVI with different passivation layers formed in solutions containing Cr(VI), Ni(II), and/or trichloroethylene, as well as in a complex water matrix.

With the replication and promotion of the experience of pilot reform and innovation, as well as the continuous deepening of institutional openness, exploring green and low-carbon models has become an important measure for the country to promote the high-quality development of free trade pilot zones. This study focused on the core task of institutional innovation in free trade pilot zones, measured and quantified the level of green investment liberalization and green trade facilitation in each region, and explored the carbon emission dual control effect of free trade pilot zones using cutting-edge methods, such as group period average processing effect estimation (CATT), imputation, and stacked DID. The research conclusions were as follows: ① The phased establishment of free trade pilot zones reduced the total carbon emissions by 27.

The lunar soil samples returned by China's Chang'e-5 (CE-5) contain valuable information on geological evolutions on the Moon. Herein, by employing high-resolution time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), five rock chip samples from the CE-5 lunar soil are characterized in-depth, which reveal micro-morphological and compositional features. From the elemental/molecular ion distribution images, minerals such as pyroxene, ilmenite, feldspar, K-rich glass, silica, and silicate minerals are identified, along with their occurrence states and distribution results.

Copper matrix composites (Cu-MCs) have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional electrical, wear-resistant, and mechanical properties. Among them, AlO/Cu composites, reinforced with AlO, are a focal point in the field of high-strength, high-conductivity copper alloys, owing to their high strength, excellent electrical conductivity, and superior resistance to high-temperature softening. Cold deformation is an effective method for enhancing the mechanical properties of AlO/Cu composites.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how the alteration of the oceanic lithosphere contributes to the energy necessary for creating organic compounds, which are essential for the deep carbon cycle and possibly the origins of life.
  • - Researchers found a specific relationship between aliphatic carbonaceous matter and iron oxyhydroxides in rocks from the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) and explored potential pathways for abiotic organic synthesis.
  • - Using advanced techniques, including quantum mechanical modeling, the study suggests that iron oxyhydroxides may facilitate the formation of carbon-carbon bonds, highlighting the SWIR as a promising location for low-temperature organic synthesis.

  • Achilles tendinopathy is commonly linked to overuse, but the exact biological mechanisms behind it are still not fully understood.
  • This study found that running does not mechanically unfold collagen in rat Achilles tendons but causes collagen to break down through a process called proteolysis, contributing to tendon damage.
  • The research also shows that running triggers inflammation and leads to ongoing degradation of collagen, which may help understand Achilles tendinopathy better and improve diagnostic imaging techniques.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the relationship between insulin resistance (IR) indexes and mortality rates, focusing on four specific IR measurement tools: TyG index, METS-IR, TG/HDL-C ratio, and HOMA-IR, amidst rising obesity rates.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 14,653 participants over a median follow-up of 116 months, discovering that METS-IR was specifically linked to both all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality.
  • Findings indicated a U-shaped relationship for METS-IR, revealing lower mortality rates at values below 41.33 and higher mortality rates above this threshold, emphasizing the index's potential as a predictive tool for health outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses how aggregates of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) in aqueous solutions can hinder its mobility, especially in large-scale applications for environmental remediation.
  • *It highlights the effectiveness of ball milling to break these aggregates down from tens of microns to less than one micron in just five minutes, significantly improving nZVI mobility.
  • *The study also explores optimizing milling conditions and offers a mechanistic understanding of how milling enhances the breaking of aggregates, suggesting it could be a better alternative to traditional mixing methods.

Objectives: To establish a radiomics-based automatic grading model for knee osteoarthritis (OA) and evaluate the influence of different body positions on the model's effectiveness.

Materials And Methods: Plain radiographs of a total of 473 pairs of knee joints from 473 patients (May 2020 to July 2021) were retrospectively analyzed. Each knee joint included anteroposterior (AP) and lateral (LAT) images which were randomly assigned to the training cohort and the testing cohort at a ratio of 7:3.

Heavy metals (HMs) such as copper, nickel and chromium are toxic, so soil contaminated with these metals is of great concern. In situ HM immobilization by adding amendments can decrease the risk of contaminants being released. A five-month field-scale study was performed to assess how different doses of biochar and zero valent iron (ZVI) affect HM bioavailability, mobility, and toxicity in contaminated soil.
