Studies have shown an association between matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) along with tissue inhibitors of MMPs (TIMP) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and CD4 T cell count, a key clinical indicator for HIV progression, but the causality remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the bidirectional causal relationship between MMPs/TIMP and HIV. A genome-wide association study-based two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted to elucidate the potential causal links between MMPs/TIMP and HIV.

The adverse remodeling is a major cause of the low patency rate of artificial small-diameter vascular grafts (SDVGs), preventing clinical application in vascular disease treatment. To inhibit intimal hyperplasia and achieve rapid endothelialization after implantation, we designed PLCL/OI@REDV grafts composed of poly (l-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLCL) electrospinning tubes loaded with anti-inflammatory 4-octyl itaconate (OI) and coated with cell-adhesive REDV peptide. PLCL/OI@REDV grafts showed a micro-scale fibrous crosslinked structure and a burst pressure higher than 1600 mmHg.

Background: Leisure activities (LAs) are vital for healthy ageing and are linked to lower mortality risk in older adults. However, most previous longitudinal studies have assessed LAs at only one time point. We aimed to explore the impact of dynamic changes in LAs on subsequent all-cause mortality among older adults.

Background: The triglyceride‒glucose index (TyG index) has been verified to be a useful predictor of insulin resistance (IR), and is associated with the occurrence of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, the effect of the TyG index on vulnerable plaques (VP), which were identified when at least two high-risk features are present within the same lesion, in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients is not fully understood. This study aimed to explore the association between the TyG index and the presence of VP.

The 7π-aromaticity observed in N-heterocyclic phosphinyl radicals (NHP˙) can offset the energy penalty associated with the disruption of 6π-aromaticity in NHP cations. This property endows NHP hydrides with facile regeneration, rendering NHP privileged organocatalysts for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reactions.

Objective: To explore the individual and interactive associations between mobile gaming addiction (MGA), excessive consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), and overweight/obesity among schoolchildren, and to investigate whether these interactions vary by gender or grade level.

Methods: Data were drawn from the Children's Growth Environment, Lifestyle, and Physical and Mental Health Development project (COHERENCE) conducted in Guangzhou, China, during the 2019/20 academic year. 418,197 children aged 6-12 years were included in the study.

Background: No prior study has examined the mutual association of long-term outdoor ozone (O) concentration and physical activity (PA) with emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs) in children and adolescents. This study aims to investigate the association between long-term outdoor O concentration and the risk of EBPs in children and adolescents and further explore whether increased PA levels modify this association.

Methods: Data were obtained from the 2020 wave follow-up examination of an ongoing prospective cohort study (COHERENCE project) in Guangzhou, China.

Organic phosphorescence or thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) scintillators, while effective in utilizing triplet excitons, are sensitive to temperature changes, which can impact radioluminescence performance. In this study, we have developed a type of temperature-adaptive organic scintillator with phosphorescence and TADF dual emission. These scintillators can automatically switch modes with temperature changes, enabling efficient radioluminescence from 77 to 400 K.

In China, primary healthcare (PHC) facilities have high antibiotic prescribing rates for upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs), which are primarily viral and self-limited. This study aimed to identify the main factors influencing PHC physicians' antibiotic decisions for URITs based on the theory of planned behavior. A convergent mixed-methods study was conducted at 30 PHC facilities across Shaanxi Province, China.

Objectives: Overuse of antibiotics in healthcare remains prevalent and requires urgent attention in China, particularly in primary healthcare (PHC) facilities. This study aimed to describe the patterns of antibiotic prescriptions for acute upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) in PHC facilities in China and to investigate how PHC physicians' knowledge influences their antibiotic prescribing behavior.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey linking physician questionnaire responses and their prescription data was conducted in Shaanxi Province, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the relationship between the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and the risk of developing gout using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted from 2007 to 2018.
  • Out of 14,924 participants, 726 were diagnosed with gout, showing a significant positive correlation between higher TyG index levels and gout risk, even after controlling for various factors.
  • The findings suggest that the TyG index is linked to gout, particularly among certain subgroups like females, individuals without military service, and those without diabetes, indicating the need for further research on this association.

The electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is currently recognized as a prospective way to obtain clean energy. The electrocatalysts used currently are dominantly based on transition metals. In this work, we have demonstrated a diazaphospholene (-heterocyclic phosphine (NHP))-type small molecular organocatalyst that can catalyze the HER with a maximum current density of 130 mA·cm, an overpotential of 354 mV, and a faradaic efficiency of 90%.

  • Hyperpigmented dermatoses cause skin discoloration due to genetics, environmental factors, and inflammation; they are challenging to treat and often persist for long periods.
  • Ultraviolet (UV) light, particularly UVB, is a key external factor for increased skin pigmentation, but the exact mechanisms behind this are not fully understood.
  • The study found that TRPS1 gene is significantly overexpressed in UV-exposed skin and plays a critical role in melanogenesis by increasing melanin production and enhancing the activity of other key genes like MITF.
