Noninfectious uveitis (NIU) is a vision-threatening autoimmune disease of the eye, but its pathogenesis is still not fully understood. Recently, accumulating evidence suggests that gut microbiome dysbiosis may affect the development and progression of NIU through potential mechanisms, including translocation, molecular mimicry, and bystander activation. Understanding the mechanisms of gut microbiome-host interactions, especially the gut-eye axis regulation, can offer a theoretical foundation for developing novel therapeutic strategies.

Sarcoidosis is a complex inflammatory disease with a strong genetic component. Here, we perform a genome-wide association study in 9755 sarcoidosis cases to identify risk loci and map associated genes. We then use transcriptome-wide association studies and enrichment analyses to explore pathways involved in sarcoidosis and use Mendelian randomization to examine associations with modifiable factors and circulating biomarkers.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to uncover the molecular pathways linking type 2 diabetes (T2D) with gastrointestinal (GI) diseases using a two-stage Mendelian randomisation approach.
  • Researchers utilized genetic data to evaluate the associations between T2D and various proteins, finding significant links between specific proteins and GI diseases such as cholelithiasis and cirrhosis.
  • The findings highlight that certain proteins, particularly SULT2A1 and ADH1B, may mediate the relationship between T2D and GI diseases, offering new biological insights into these conditions.

Gut microbe dysbiosis increases repetitive inflammatory responses, leading to an increase in the incidence of colorectal cancer. Recent studies have revealed that specific microbial species directly instigate mutations in the host nucleus DNA, thereby accelerating the progression of colorectal cancer. Given the well-established role of mitochondrial dysfunction in promoting colorectal cancer, it is reasonable to postulate that gut microbes may induce mitochondrial gene mutations, thereby inducing mitochondrial dysfunction.

Article Synopsis
  • Multiple myeloma is the second most common blood cancer, yet its quality of care has not received adequate attention, prompting a global assessment of quality from 1990 to 2019.
  • Researchers calculated a Quality of Care Index (QCI) for multiple myeloma using data from 195 countries, finding that global QCI improved but still showed disparities based on factors like age, gender, and socio-demographic development.
  • Results indicate that while quality of care has generally improved, there remains substantial room for enhancement, especially in lower socio-demographic areas, suggesting targeted efforts could yield better outcomes for patients worldwide.
