For infection-associated implant osteomyelitis (IAOM) caused by Staphylococcus aureus, copper-induced bacterial death holds great potential. However, inducing bacterial cuproptosis-like death using low concentrations of copper (Cu) ions remains a challenge. Therefore, a "herbal-piezoelectric heterojunction" (Herbal-Piezo-HJ) is designed by integrating berberine (Ber) with Cu ion-doped Strontium titanate (SrTiO, STO) on a Ti substrate (STO-Cu@Ber).

Despite the progress of treatment in gastric cancer (GC), the overall outcomes remain poor in patients with advanced diseases, underscoring the urgency to develop more effective treatment strategies. BH3-mimetic drugs, which inhibit the pro-survival BCL2 family proteins, have demonstrated great therapeutic potential in cancer therapy. Although previous studies have implicated a role of targeting the cell survival pathway in GC, the contribution of different pro-survival BCL2 family proteins in promoting survival and mediating resistance to current standard therapies in GC remains unclear.

Halide perovskite single crystals have demonstrated enormous potential for next-generation integrated optoelectronic devices. However, there is a lack of a facile method to realize the controllable growth of large-scale, high-quality, and high-resolution perovskite single crystal arrays on diverse types of substrates, which hinders their application in practical scenarios. Here, a one-step wettability-guided blade coating approach is reported for the rapid in situ crystallization of large-scale, multicolor, and sub-100 nm perovskite single-crystal arrays in the ambient environment.

Background: The traditional neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) combined with total mesorectal excision has been widely accepted as the standard treatment for patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). New strategies such as total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) and neoadjuvant immunotherapy have shown great promise in certain patient populations. Currently, there is an urgent need to stratify patients before treatment to adopt the appropriate neoadjuvant strategies.

We introduce a computational framework that integrates artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and high-performance computing to enable real-time steering of neutron scattering experiments using an edge-to-exascale workflow. Focusing on time-of-flight neutron event data at the Spallation Neutron Source, our approach combines temporal processing of four-dimensional neutron event data with predictive modeling for multidimensional crystallography. At the core of this workflow is the Temporal Fusion Transformer model, which provides voxel-level precision in predicting 3D neutron scattering patterns.

The pan-immune-inflammation value reflects the systemic inflammatory response, and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes indicate a local immune response in rectal cancer. However, the association between systemic inflammatory response, as indicated by the pan-immune-inflammation value, and local immune responses in rectal cancer remains unclear. This study analyzed 915 treatment-naïve rectal cancer patients from the Peking Union Medical College Hospital and PLA General Hospital (PLAGH) cohorts who underwent radical surgery to investigate the relationship between the pan-immune-inflammation value and immune responses.

The physical killing of bacteria based on surface topography has attracted much attention due to the sustainable and safe prevention of biofilm formation. However, the antibacterial efficiency of biomedical implants derived solely from nanostructures or microstructures is insufficient to combat bacteria against common infections, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus with thick cell walls. Herein, photothermal therapy is carried out in the presence of nanorod arrays to mitigate infection of biomedical implants.

Article Synopsis
  • Research shows significant differences between left-sided colon cancers (LCC) and right-sided colon cancers (RCC), particularly regarding the immune marker pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV) and its prognostic implications.
  • A study with 1510 colon cancer patients found that while PIV levels were generally higher in RCC, after matching for other factors, there was no difference in PIV between the two groups.
  • PIV is a useful predictor for disease-free survival (DFS) in LCC patients, where high PIV levels indicate worse DFS, but it does not show the same predictive ability in RCC patients.

Article Synopsis
  • NEAT1 is a long noncoding RNA implicated in various human cancers, particularly in glioblastoma multiforme, and exists in two isoforms, NEAT1_1 and NEAT1_2, generated through alternative end formation.
  • Previous studies struggled with accurately quantifying these isoforms and understanding their roles in tumor development, highlighting the need for more specific investigations.
  • This study revealed that manipulating the polyadenylation site (PAS) of NEAT1 affects the balance of isoforms, with increased NEAT1_2 enhancing nuclear paraspeckle formation and promoting glioma cell migration, indicating significant functional implications for cancer progression.
