In the early stage of an infectious disease outbreak, public health strategies tend to gravitate towards non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) given the time required to develop targeted treatments and vaccines. One of the most common NPIs is Test-Trace-Isolate (TTI). One of the factors determining the effectiveness of TTI is the ability to identify contacts of infected individuals.

In 2022, an unprecedented mpox epidemic rapidly swept the globe, primarily transmitted through sexual contact among men who have sex with men (MSM). However, our understanding of how changes in human behavior influence this outbreak remains incomplete. In this study, we introduce a two-layer network model to investigate the impact of human behavior on mpox transmission within the United States during 2022-2023, leveraging surveillance data.

Article Synopsis
  • Monitoring the spread of infectious diseases is crucial for timely public health interventions, but traditional incidence-based methods for estimating the effective reproduction number (Rt) have biases and limitations, especially early in an epidemic.
  • Recent research highlights the importance of viral loads measured by cycle thresholds (Ct) in understanding epidemic trajectories, leading to the development of a new approach called Cycle Threshold-based Transformer (Ct-Transformer).
  • The Ct-Transformer shows improved accuracy over traditional methods in estimating Rt and is adaptable to varying detection resources, achieving strong performance through both supervised and self-supervised learning on real-world and synthetic datasets.

There are many contrasting results concerning the effectiveness of Test-Trace-Isolate (TTI) strategies in mitigating SARS-CoV-2 spread. To shed light on this debate, we developed a novel static-temporal multiplex network characterizing both the regular (static) and random (temporal) contact patterns of individuals and a SARS-CoV-2 transmission model calibrated with historical COVID-19 epidemiological data. We estimated that the TTI strategy alone could not control the disease spread: assuming R0 = 2.

The Omicron transmission has infected nearly 600,000 people in Shanghai from March 26 to May 31, 2022. Combined with different control measures taken by the government in different periods, a dynamic model was constructed to investigate the impact of medical resources, shelter hospitals and aerosol transmission generated by clustered nucleic acid testing on the spread of Omicron. The parameters of the model were estimated by least square method and MCMC method, and the accuracy of the model was verified by the cumulative number of asymptomatic infected persons and confirmed cases in Shanghai from March 26 to May 31, 2022.

Background: Contact patterns play a key role in the spread of respiratory infectious diseases in human populations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the regular contact patterns of the population have been disrupted due to social distancing both imposed by the authorities and individual choices. Many studies have focused on age-mixing patterns before the COVID-19 pandemic, but they provide very little information about the mixing patterns in the COVID-19 era.

There are contrasting results concerning the effect of reactive school closure on SARS-CoV-2 transmission. To shed light on this controversy, we developed a data-driven computational model of SARS-CoV-2 transmission. We found that by reactively closing classes based on syndromic surveillance, SARS-CoV-2 infections are reduced by no more than 17.

Objectives: Net water uptake (NWU) has been shown to have a linear relationship with brain edema. Based on an automated-Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score (ASPECTS) technique, we automatically derived NWU from baseline multimodal computed tomography (CT), namely ASPECTS-NWU. We aimed to determine if ASPECTS-NWU can predict the development of malignant cerebral edema (MCE).

Mathematical and computational modeling approaches are increasingly used as quantitative tools in the analysis and forecasting of infectious disease epidemics. The growing need for realism in addressing complex public health questions is, however, calling for accurate models of the human contact patterns that govern the disease transmission processes. Here we present a data-driven approach to generate effective population-level contact matrices by using highly detailed macro (census) and micro (survey) data on key socio-demographic features.

Background: In acute ischemic stroke, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) volume is an independent predictive factor of poor outcome and an exclusion criterion for thrombolytic treatment. A simplified diameters method (ABC/2, orthogonal diameter [OD], and the maximum diameter [MD]) was proposed to replace the conventional measuring method and overcome the tedious and time-consuming defects, but its accuracy remains to be determined.

Objective: The objective of this study is to clarify the reliability and reproducibility of the diameter-based estimations in the infarct volume in DWI (Vol-DWI) measured by automated software.

The propagations of diseases, behaviors and information in real systems are rarely independent of each other, but they are coevolving with strong interactions. To uncover the dynamical mechanisms, the evolving spatiotemporal patterns and critical phenomena of networked coevolution spreading are extremely important, which provide theoretical foundations for us to control epidemic spreading, predict collective behaviors in social systems, and so on. The coevolution spreading dynamics in complex networks has thus attracted much attention in many disciplines.
