Diabetic wounds complicated by bacterial infections present a significant clinical challenge, and cause a great burden to the world's health care systems. Infections by bacteria, especially drug-resistant bacteria, is the major underlying factor leading to diabetic wounds. Here, we synthesized a series of fluoroborane dipyrrole compounds that can be activated under ambient light conditions, and identified one compound with potent antibacterial action.

Sleep apnea, characterized by its high prevalence and serious health consequences, faces a critical bottleneck in diagnosis. Polysomnography (PSG), the gold standard, is costly and cumbersome, while wearable devices struggle with quality control and patient compliance, rendering them as unsuitable for both large-scale screening and continuous monitoring. To address these challenges, this research introduces a contactless, low-cost, and accurate event-level sleep apnea detection method leveraging frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar technology.

Article Synopsis
  • Orbital inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are rare tumors with potential for local invasion, as revealed by a study analyzing 13 cases over 18 years.
  • The patients had a wide age range and showed various symptoms, with nearly half experiencing bone destruction and a significant rate of recurrence within months after surgery.
  • The study highlights the need for further research on the histology and clinical behavior of orbital IMTs due to their complex nature and tendency for recurrence.

Background: This study aimed to present a case of bilateral symmetric onset of acute idiopathic maculopathy after high fever with peripheral vascular occlusion.

Case Presentation: A 54-year-old yellow female experienced acute binocular visual acuity decrease after 1 day of high fever, and binocular visual acuity decreased to index or anterior. OCT in the external hospital showed dome-shaped cortical detachment in the symmetrical macular area of both eyes with subretinal fluid, discontinuity in the ellipsoid zone and the chimera.

Background: To investigate the unique properties of clinical manifestation and radiological imaging for differential diagnosis of optic nerve hemangioblastoma (ONH) from adult optic nerve glioma (ONG) prior to surgical resection.

Methods: ONH and adult ONG patients were recruited from 2012 to 2022.

Results: A total of seven ONH patients (8 eyes) and 23 adult ONG patients (24 eyes) were assessed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the differences between optic neuritis (ON) caused by the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 and spontaneous demyelinating ON, focusing on clinical features and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) characteristics.
  • Fifteen patients with Omicron-related ON and fifteen control patients with demyelinating ON were compared, revealing higher ocular pain and peripapillary hemorrhages in the Omicron group, along with elevated white cell counts in CSF.
  • The findings suggest Omicron-related ON presents with more severe symptoms and distinct CSF profiles, supporting steroid treatment while highlighting the need for tailored approaches in managing these conditions.

Potentially fatal fungal sphenoid sinusitis (FSS) causes visual damage. However, few studies have reported on its visual impairment and prognosis. Five hundred and eleven FSS patients with ocular complications treated at Beijing Tongren Hospital were recruited and clinical features and visual outcomes were determined.

Article Synopsis
  • - Wilson disease (WD) is a genetic disorder that affects how the body processes copper, leading to various health issues, often including eye problems like Kayser-Fleischer rings and sunflower cataracts.
  • - A case study is presented about a 17-year-old girl with bilateral optic atrophy linked to WD, despite visual impairment being uncommon in WD patients.
  • - The report emphasizes that clinicians should be vigilant about the potential for optic neuropathy in patients with WD and the need for appropriate screening and recognition of this rare complication.

  • Rhizoma Dioscoreae Nipponicae (RDN) shows potential in treating asthma by reducing inflammation and airway remodeling in a mouse model.
  • RDN significantly decreased eosinophil counts and inflammatory cell infiltration while inhibiting markers associated with airway remodeling, like collagen I and α-SMA.
  • The study found that RDN works through the p38 MAPK pathway and induces ferroptosis in eosinophils, leading to improved symptoms of asthma.

Introduction: Ocular immune-related adverse events (OirAEs) associated with novel cancer therapies of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are emerging. Retrobulbar optic neuritis (ON) combined with optic perineuritis (OPN), associated with atezolizumab, has been rarely reported and has a unique clinical manifestation.

Case Description: A 67-year-old woman was diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates corneal nerve fiber damage in patients with optic neuritis (ON), a condition that can indicate more severe diseases like neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) or multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • Researchers used corneal confocal microscopy (IVCM) to analyze nerve fiber counts in 48 ON patients categorized by specific antibodies and compared them to 35 healthy controls.
  • Results showed that patients with ON had significant nerve fiber loss, particularly in the affected eye, with reductions linked to poorer visual acuity, suggesting that ON not only impacts the central nervous system but also the peripheral nerves.

Aerobic glycolysis has been considered as a hallmark of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the potential functional regulators of glycolysis in CRC remains to be elucidated. In the current study, we found that Regenerating islet-derived protein 1-alpha (REG1α) was significantly increased in both CRC tissues and serum, and positively associated with CRC patients' lymph node metastasis, advanced tumor stage, and unfavorable prognosis.

This study aimed to introduce the use of an acellular dermal matrix (ADM) as a posterior lamellar substitution for full-thickness eyelid reconstruction after malignant tumor excision. After resection of the malignant eyelid tumors, anterior lamellar defects were repaired using direct sutures and pedicled flaps in 20 patients (15 men and 5 women). ADM was used to replace the tarsal plate and the conjunctiva.
