Purpose: Optic neuritis (ON), a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, is often a precursor manifestation of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) or multiple sclerosis (MS). Reduced corneal nerve fiber counts have been found in patients with NMOSD or MS. This study aimed to observe and compare the corneal subbasal nerve plexus in patients with three types of ON and controls without ON using corneal confocal microscopy (IVCM).
Methods: Data were analyzed for 77 eyes of 48 patients with ON, grouped according to seropositivity for anti-aquaporin-4 IgG, myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody, or no seropositivity, and 35 healthy eyes in the control group. Corneal parameters were quantified based on IVCM images. Visual function indicators were recorded, following which their correlations with IVCM parameters were analyzed.
Results: Significant differences in IVCM parameters were detected among the different groups. Reductions in corneal nerve fiber counts were negatively correlated with visual acuity. Corneal nerve fibers were significantly more damaged in the affected eye than in the unaffected eye in patients with ON.
Conclusion: IVCM revealed corneal nerve fiber loss of varying degrees, depending on the type of ON. This indicates that, although ON primarily affects the central nervous system, peripheral nerves, such as the trigeminal nerve, which innervates the corneal subbasal nerve plexus may also be damaged in affected patients.

Purpose: To characterize corneal immune cell morphodynamics and nerve features, and define the in vivo immune landscape in older adults with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), relative to healthy age-matched adults.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 16 HIV-positive individuals receiving ART and 15 age-matched controls underwent ocular surface examinations and functional in vivo confocal microscopy (Fun-IVCM). Time-lapsed videos were created to analyze corneal immune cells (T cells, dendritic cells [DCs], macrophages).

Purpose: The purinergic receptor P2X4 is critical to transduction of ocular pain. The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic potential of the P2X4 receptor antagonist BAY-776 in alleviating chronic ocular pain.
Methods: Chronic ocular pain was induced in male rats (8-9 weeks old; n = 12 per group) via double lacrimal gland removal (DLGR).

Purpose: To investigate the clinical manifestations and outcomes of herpes simplex keratitis (HSK) infection following corneal transplantation.
Methods: This retrospective study analyzed medical records of patients who underwent corneal transplantation at the People's Hospital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region between January 2018 and March 2024, with a minimum follow-up period of 1 year. The study examined post-transplantation herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, including the timing of HSV infection, HSK classification, clinical manifestations, and outcomes.

Aim: To map, summarise and analyse the methodologies of corneal nerve fibre imaging in studies using in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) in diabetes and assess the potential for standardising methods and reporting.
Methods: A scoping review was conducted using five databases, MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, Web of Science and Scopus, with search terms related to IVCM, diabetes and corneal nerves. Two researchers independently screened the studies for eligibility.

Introduction: Nitrous oxide is an inhaled anaesthetic used recreationally that is neurotoxic. Corneal nerve parameters were assessed in patients with nitrous oxide toxicity.
Methods: Four individuals underwent clinical, electrophysiological and corneal confocal microscopy assessment.
