The mixotrophic partial denitrification/anammox (MPDA) was a highly efficient nitrogen removal system, but its total nitrogen removal efficiency decreased from 95 % to 83 % due to nitrite supply destabilization under the pressure of disinfectants. The decrease in sulfur autotrophic denitrification activity and increase in heterotrophic denitrification activity were responsible for the partial denitrification (PD) disruption. Consistently, there was an increase in the abundance of Thauera, a decrease in Thiobacillus and Thiothrix.

While traditional culture-dependent methods can effectively detect certain microorganisms, the comprehensive composition of the municipal drinking water (DW) microbiome, including bacteria, archaea, and viruses, remains unknown. Metagenomic sequencing has opened the door to accurately determine and analyze the entire microbial community of DW, providing a comprehensive understanding of DW species diversity, especially in the context of public health concerns during the COVID-19 era. The spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), including intracellular ARGs (i-ARGs) and extracellular ARGs (e-ARGs), has become a global problem that cannot be ignored. This study clarified the fates of e-ARGs and i-ARGs in floc sludge reactor (FS), granular sludge reactor (GS) and biofilm reactor (BF) under the stress of acetaminophen (APAP). The results showed that the risk of ARGs transmission, especially for e-ARGs, in FS and BF could increase with the increasing times of APAP treatment, except for that in GS.
