The development of a high-rate SiO lithium-ion battery anode is seriously limited by its low intrinsic conductivity, sluggish interfacial charge transfer (ICT), and unstable dynamic interface. To tackle the above issues, interfacial encapsulation engineering for effectively regulating the interfacial reaction and thus realizing a stable solid electrolyte interphase is significantly important. Hybrid coating, which aims to enhance the coupled e/Li transport via the employment of dual layers, has emerged as a promising strategy.

Structural Design Principle of Rocksalt Oxides for Li-Excess Cathode Materials.

ACS Nano

January 2024

State Key Laboratory of High Performance Ceramics and Superfine Microstructure, Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1295 Dingxi Road, Shanghai 200050, China.

Li-excess oxide cathodes have received increasing attention due to their high capacity derived from accumulated cation and anion redox activity. However, Li-excess layered oxides suffer from capacity and voltage decay due to the irreversible phase transition, while cation-disordered cathodes also have the problems of poor cycling stability and rate capability. The rocksalt oxides with a layered-disordered coexistence nanostructure can combine the advantages of both phases such as the inherent high capacity of Li-excess oxides, good rate capability of the layered phase, and structural stability resulting from the intergrown disordered phase.

Diffusion of Solute Atoms in an Evaporated Liquid Droplet.

Langmuir

January 2024

School of Aerospace Engineering and Applied Mechanics, Tongji University, No. 1239 Siping Road, Shanghai 200092, China.

Controlling the evaporation of a solvent has made it possible to grow crystals, nanoparticles, and microparticles from liquid droplets. At the heart of this process is the evaporation-induced diffusion of solute atoms, causing the liquid solution of the solute atoms to be in a supersaturated state. In this work, we analyze the mass transport in a spherical liquid droplet, which experiences the loss or evaporation of the solvents across the droplet surface.

Chemical stress in a largely deformed electrode: Effects of trapping lithium.

iScience

November 2023

Materials Program, Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY 40506, USA.

Lithium trapping, which is associated with the immobilization of lithium and is one of key factors contributing to structural degradation of lithium-ion batteries during electrochemical cycling, can exacerbate mechanical stress and ultimately cause the capacity loss and battery failure. Currently, there are few studies focusing on how lithium trapping contributes to mechanical stress during electrochemical cycling. This study incorporates the contribution of lithium trapping in the analysis of mechanical stress and mass transport in the framework of finite deformation.

Polyurethane Foam Skeleton-Based Phase Change Hydrogel for Efficient Battery Thermal Management with Favorable Antivibration Performance.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

October 2023

School of Energy and Materials, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Engineering Materials Application and Evaluation, Shanghai Polytechnic University, Shanghai 201209, China.

Efficient thermal management is critical to ensure the safe and reliable operation of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) as they are highly sensitive to temperature changes. Meanwhile, LIBs are exposed to various external forces during operation, such as vibration, shock, and oscillation, which may disrupt the physical and chemical processes inside the battery and lead to a decreased performance and shortened life. Here, we designed a phase change hydrogel (PCH) pad based on the polyurethane (PU) foam skeleton and demonstrated its effectiveness in efficient thermal management and improving antivibration performance.
