The long-term accumulation of electrolytic manganese residue leads to pollution issues related to NH -N and Mn. Although various methods exist to address the pollution caused by NH -N and Mn, existing hazard-free treatment methods do not consider the subsequent utilization of the electrolytic manganese residue. Meanwhile, resource recovery methods face challenges due to the complex salt structures present in electrolytic manganese residue.

Single-step laser-printed integrated sulfur cathode toward high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries.

Nat Commun

March 2025

Center for Smart Manufacturing, Division of Integrative Systems and Design, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Clear Water Bay, Kowloon, Hong Kong SAR, China.

Lithium-sulfur batteries are expected to supersede existing lithium-ion batteries due to the high theoretical energy density of sulfur cathodes (positive electrodes). Unfortunately, inefficient redox reactions and the "shuttle effect" hinder their commercial development. Assembling high-performance nanostructured sulfur host materials into a sulfur cathode presents a viable solution.

Conventional oxidation processes for alkyl aromatics to ketones employ oxidants that tend to generate harmful byproducts and cause severe equipment corrosion, ultimately creating critical environmental problems. Thus, in this study, a practical, efficient, and green method was developed for the synthesis of aromatic ketones by applying a bis(2-butoxyethyl) ether/O system under external catalyst-, additive-, and base-free conditions. This O-mediated oxidation system can tolerate various functional groups and is suitable for large-scale synthesis.

Ofloxacin (OFL) is a commonly used antibiotic that can enter wastewater treatment plants and be adsorbed by the sludge, resulting in a high OFL concentration in sludge and affecting the subsequent sludge anaerobic digestion process. However, the micro mechanisms involved in this process have not been thoroughly studied. Therefore, this study focuses on the effect of OFL on the sludge anaerobic digestion of sludge to provide such support.

May 2024

Laboratory of Micro & Nano Biosensing Technology in Food Safety, Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Food Science and Biotechnology, College of Food Science and Technology, Hunan Agricultural University, Changsha 410128, China.

Herein, a novel fluorescent/colorimetric/photothermal biosensor is proposed for aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) detection in food based on Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) (∼50 nm), gold nanoclusters (AuNCs), and an aptamer (Apt) within three hours. Briefly, a multifunctional compound, namely PBNPs-PEI@AuNCs, was synthesized from PBNPs as the loading carrier, polyethyleneimine (PEI) as the cross-linking agent, and AuNCs directly combined on the surface of PBNPs. The AFB1 Apt was then modified on the PBNPs-PEI@AuNCs to form a PBNPs-PEI@AuNCs-Apt probe, whereby when AFB1 is present, AFB1 is specifically captured by the probe.

Flotation separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite using lime or cyanides as depressants results in serious problems, such as the blockage of pipelines and environmental pollution. Eco-friendly organics are a future trend for beneficiation plants. In this research, the eco-friendly organic depressant sodium humate (SH) was chosen as a depressant to separate chalcopyrite from pyrite by flotation.

Nanotechnology

September 2023

Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Materials Protection for Electric Power and Transportation, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Changsha University of Science and Technology, Changsha 410114, Hunan, People's Republic of China.

LiNiCoMnO(NCM811) is one of the most promising cathode materials for high-energy lithium-ion batteries, but there are still problems such as rapid capacity decay during charge and discharge and poor cycle performance. Elemental doping can significantly improve the electrochemical performance of high nickel ternary cathode materials. In this work, Nb-doped NCM811 cathode material was successfully synthesized.

Current flotation practices using lime or cyanide as depressants in chalcopyrite and pyrite separation have significant disadvantages, such as substantial reagent consumption, high slurry pH, and environmental hazards. This work aimed to explore the utilization and mechanisms of tannic acid (TA) as an eco-friendly alternative to lime or cyanide in chalcopyrite-pyrite separation. Flotation results showed that TA selectively depressed pyrite yet allowed chalcopyrite to float at neutral or alkaline pH.

In recent years, ternary nickel-rich layered oxides have gradually replaced traditional binary cathode materials in the lithium-ion battery market due to their advantages of high energy density and environmental protection. However, their structural instability of cathode materials has seriously affected the cycle performance of the battery. In order to optimize the internal structure of LiNiCoMnO(NCM523), the modified LiNiCoMnOwas prepared bydoping Na and Cl wet grinding solid phase method.

We present an environment-friendly and highly efficient method for the oxidation of aromatic alcohols to carboxylic acids or ketones in air via light irradiation under external catalyst-, additive-, and base-free conditions. The photoreaction system exhibits a wide substrate scope and the potential for large-scale applications. Most of the desired products are easily obtained via recrystallization and separation from low-boiling reaction medium acetone in good yields, and the products can be subsequent directly transformed without further purification.

July 2022

School of Metallurgy and Environment, Central South University, 932 Lushan South Road, Changsha, 410083, Hunan, China.

Bauxite residue is a highly alkaline waste from alumina refining, and is mainly disposed by stacking with high environmental risks. Here, the migration of alkaline constituents and the restoration evaluation with phosphogypsum were discussed by soil column experiments to investigate the alkaline regulation in bauxite residue disposal areas (BRDAs). The pH, free alkali, exchangeable sodium in the top layer (0-25 cm depth) covered with BR and phosphogypsum mixtures were reduced from 10.

Side-reactions in LiNiCo Mn O (0≤ +≤1) cathode materials are one kind of the problems that would deteriorate the surface structure and the electrochemical stabilities of the cathodes, especially when they are working at high cut-off voltages and high temperatures. In this study, an ultrathin (~10 nm) AlPO coating layer was fabricated through a two-step "feeding" process on LiNiCoMnO (NCM) cathode materials. The structure and chemical composition of the AlPO coating were studied by XRD, SEM, TEM, and XPS characterizations.

This paper combines a Granger causality test and a VAR model to investigate the relationships among oil price shocks, global economic policy uncertainty (GEPU), and China's industrial economic growth. Based on monthly data from 2000 to 2017, we reveal that GEPU and world oil prices jointly Granger cause China's industrial economic growth; world oil prices have a positive effect on China's industrial economic growth, while GEPU has a negative effect. Further analyses investigate the asymmetry effect of oil prices and find that the negative component shows a more significant impact on China's industrial economic growth.
