High-Pressure Synthesis and Characterization of the Novel Potassium Superhydride KH.

J Phys Chem Lett

September 2025

Center for Science at Extreme Conditions (CSEC) and the School of Physics and Astronomy, The University of Edinburgh, EH9 3JZ Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

Through high-pressure diamond anvil cell experiments, we report the synthesis of two novel potassium superhydrides (KH-I and KH-II) and investigate their structural and vibrational properties via synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, complemented by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Above 17 GPa at room temperature, KH-II and H react to form KH-I; this reaction can be accelerated with temperature. KH-I possesses a face-centered-cubic () potassium sublattice with a slight rhombohedral distortion (space group 3̅).

Evolutionary medicine of emunctory functions of the kidney: an empirical review.

Evol Med Public Health

August 2025

Department of Pediatrics, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, USA.

Primitive emunctory functions to expel harmful substances from cells and the interstitial space of multicellular organisms evolved over the past billion and a half years into the complex physiology of the metanephric kidney. Integrative biology allows empirical testing of hypotheses of the origins of renal structures from homologous single-celled precursors. Emunctory cell complexes called nephridia evolved in metazoan (cnidarian) ancestors 750 million years ago (mya).

Patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) may experience neurobehavioral and cognitive concerns, including psychiatric symptoms, due to the absence of full-length dystrophin (Dp427), frequently accompanied by deficiencies in shorter isoforms. The lack of dystrophin affects neurophysiological processes from the uterine phase, impacting neural circuitry in brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum. This leads to reduced inhibitory GABAergic transmission and altered hippocampal glutamatergic signaling.

Contrarian Design of Versatile MoS-Based Self-Lubrication Film.

Small

September 2025

Department of Materials Science, Key Laboratory of Automobile Materials, MOE and State Key Laboratory of High Pressure and Superhard Materials, International Center of Future Science, Jilin University, Changchun, 130012, China.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS) exhibits excellent lubrication capacity rooted in its layered structure, but it suffers significant structural and functional deterioration due to oxidation in ambient environments, limiting its applications. Concerted efforts are focused on enhancing the antioxidation ability of MoS, but challenges remain. This work conceptualizes and demonstrates a contrarian design of MoS-based film via metal incorporation and oxidation based on consideration of key fundamental principles of thermodynamics, chemistry, and physical mechanics.

Antipyretic analgesics are typical pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) that are widely used in our daily life because they relieve fever and pain, and have anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic properties. These drugs inhibit the synthesis and release of prostaglandins (PGs) in the neurons of the anterior hypothalamus and exert therapeutic effects as a consequence. However, these drugs are relatively commonly misused and abused, often owing to a lack of proper medication guidance.

Diamond and adamantane () share a -symmetric carbon skeleton, but converting to diamond has been challenging because it requires selective carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bond cleavage and monomer assembly into a diamond lattice. Our approach differs from the conventional high-temperature, high-pressure diamond syntheses. We electron-irradiated submicrocrystals at 80 to 200 kilo-electron volts and 100 to 296 kelvin in vacuum for tens of seconds.

Adv Mater

September 2025

Center for High Pressure Science (CHiPS), State Key Laboratory of Metastable Materials Science and Technology, Yanshan University, Qinhuangdao, 066004, China.

Neuromorphic computing presents a promising solution for the von Neumann bottleneck, enabling energy-efficient and intelligent sensing platforms. Although 2D materials are ideal for bioinspired neuromorphic devices, achieving multifunctional synaptic operations with simple configurations and linear weight updates remains challenging. Inspired by biological axons, the in-plane anisotropy of 2D NbGeTe is exploited to develop dual electronic-optical synaptic devices.

College of Pharmaceutical Engineering of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Tianjin 301617, China Tianjin Key Laboratory of Intelligent and Green Pharmaceuticals for Traditional Chinese Medicine Tianjin 301617, China.

The study investigated the intrinsic changes in material basis of Angelicae Sinensis Radix during wine processing by headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry(HS-GC-IMS), headspace-solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(HS-SPME-GC-MS), and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-orbitrap mass spectrometry(UPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS) combined with chemometrics. HS-GC-IMS fingerprints of Angelicae Sinensis Radix before and after wine processing were established to analyze the variation trends of volatile components and characterize volatile small-molecule substances before and after processing. Principal component analysis(PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis(OPLS-DA) were employed for differentiation and difference analysis.

Department of Periodontology, School of Stomatology, The Fourth Military Medical University, State Key Laboratory of Oral & Maxillofacial Reconstruction and Regeneration, National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, Shaanxi International Joint Research Center for Oral Diseases, Xi'an 710032,

Periodontitis, a common chronic inflammatory disease, progressively damages the supporting tissues of teeth, ultimately resulting in tooth loss. The rising incidence of periodontitis in adults has prompted researchers to observe a frequent co-occurrence of mental health disorders (such as anxiety disorders, depression disorders) in patients undergoing periodontitis onset and treatment. The existence of severe periodontitis can even aggravate the mental and psychological disorders of patients.

Relationship among Structure, Disorder, Magnetism, and Band Topology in the MnSbTe·(SbTe) Family.

J Phys Chem Lett

September 2025

School of Physics and Beijing Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Functional Materials & MicroNano Devices, Renmin University of China, Beijing 100872, China.

The interplay between topology and magnetism induces various exotic quantum phenomena, with magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) serving as a prominent example due to their ability to host the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE). However, the realization of the QAHE at a higher temperature approaching the magnetic transition temperature remains a significant challenge, primarily due to the scarcity of suitable material platforms and our limited understanding of the intricate relationships among band topology, magnetism, and defects. Here, we report a comprehensive investigation of MnSbTe·(SbTe) ( = 0-5) single crystals, including the discovery of the novel MnSbTe pure phase.

Determining the composition, formation mechanisms and stability of the Hadean continental crust is essential for understanding the early geological history of Earth. Detrital zircons, largely from Jack Hills of Western Australia, provide the dominant direct records for the nature of continental crust during the Hadean eon and its formation processes. Although isotope and trace element compositions of these zircons are extensively determined, the major and trace element compositions of their host rocks and corresponding parental magmas remain largely debated, making the nature and evolution of the early Earth's crust ambiguous.
