Hierarchy is the basic character of the human brain. Neuronal oscillation is one of the fundamental features of brain function, revealing abnormal hierarchical structures in psychiatric disorders from a system-level perspective. However, to date, no research has yet quantified the normal and abnormal brain functional hierarchy based on oscillation patterns.

Anaerobic digestion of food waste can recover carbon in the form of biogas, while the high concentration of ammonia nitrogen in the digestion effluent becomes troublesome. Therefore, some new treatment plants use three-phase centrifugation to separate homogenized food waste into nitrogen-rich fine slag for insect cultivation and carbon-rich liquid for anaerobic digestion. To analyze the effects of the carbon-nitrogen separation, an upgraded plant's material and elementary flows were investigated.

The purpose of this study is to assess the relationship between retinal vascular characteristics and cognitive function using artificial intelligence techniques to obtain fully automated quantitative measurements of retinal vascular morphological parameters. A deep learning-based semantic segmentation network ResNet101-UNet was used to construct a vascular segmentation model for fully automated quantitative measurement of retinal vascular parameters on fundus photographs. Retinal photographs centered on the optic disc of 3107 participants (aged 50-93 years) from the Beijing Eye Study 2011, a population-based cross-sectional study, were analyzed.

Although many technologies can be applied to sewage sludge (SS) and food waste (FW) treatment, high investment and operational costs, high land occupation, and the "not-in-my-backyard" effect pose many challenges in practice. Thus, it is important to develop and utilize low-carbon or negative-carbon technologies to tackle the carbon problem. This paper proposes a method of anaerobic co-digestion of FW and SS, thermally hydrolyzed sludge (THS), or THS filtrate (THF) to enhance their methane potential.

Article Synopsis
  • Thyroid hormone receptor β (THR-β) is essential for regulating metabolism, and this study evaluated a new THR-β agonist called CS271011 for its safety and efficiency in comparison to another drug, MGL-3196.
  • The methodology included various tests on mice with a high-fat diet, focusing on body weight, liver functions, and gene expression related to lipid metabolism after administering CS271011 and MGL-3196.
  • Results indicated that CS271011 had superior activation of THR-β, better pharmacokinetics, and effectively improved fat metabolism and liver health compared to MGL-3196, positioning it as a promising treatment for lipid disorders.

Wind power is a promising electricity source. Nevertheless, wind turbine blade icing can cause severe problems in turbine operation. In this study, SiO spherical nanoparticles (∼90 nm), produced by RF (radio frequency) plasma spheroidization, were mixed with E51, PDMS, and ethyl acetate, and sprayed on the surface of aluminum plates and regular power windmill fan blades which were already coated with polyurethane primer.

The effects of nanoconfined water and the charge storage mechanism are crucial to achieving the ultrahigh electrochemical performance of two-dimensional transition metal carbides (MXenes). We propose a facile method to manipulate nanoconfined water through surface chemistry modification. By introducing oxygen and nitrogen surface groups, more active sites were created for TiC MXene, and the interlayer spacing was significantly increased by accommodating three-layer nanoconfined water.

Transition metal oxides or (oxy)hydroxides have been intensively investigated as promising electrocatalysts for energy and environmental applications. Oxygen in the lattice was reported recently to actively participate in surface reactions. Herein, we report a sacrificial template-directed approach to synthesize Mo-doped NiFe (oxy)hydroxide with modulated oxygen activity as an enhanced electrocatalyst towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER).

It is promising to recover lactic acid (LA) from fermentation of food waste (FW). In this study, pH and temperatures were investigated comprehensively to find their effects on LA fermentation, and microbial analyses were used to take insight to the variation of LA production. The results showed that mesophilic fermentation benefited hydrolysis and acidification, leading to a high yield of LA, while thermophilic conditions restricted other producers at low pH, leading to a high purity of LA.

Human amylin forms structurally heterogeneous amyloids that have been linked to type-2 diabetes. Thus, understanding the molecular interactions governing amylin aggregation can provide mechanistic insights in its pathogenic formation. Here, we demonstrate that fibril formation of amylin is altered by synthetic amphipathic copolymer derivatives of the styrene-maleic-acid (SMAQA and SMAEA).

More than 60% of nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients show a positive response to the first ALK inhibitor, crizotinib, which has been used as the standard treatment for newly diagnosed patients with ALK rearrangement. However, most patients inevitably develop crizotinib resistance due to acquired secondary mutations in the ALK kinase domain, such as the gatekeeper mutation L1196M and the most refractory mutation, G1202R. Here, we develop XMU-MP-5 as a new-generation ALK inhibitor to overcome crizotinib resistance mutations, including L1196M and G1202R.

It is a promising method to recover lactic acid from food waste (FW) fermentation, but the bottleneck problem is the low yield when using mixed inoculation. In this study, laboratorial biogas slurry (LBS) and industrial biogas slurry (IBS) were used as the additive in semi-continuous FW fermentation, aiming to promote the production of lactic acid. According to the research results, the addition of LBS or IBS promoted the production of lactic acid significantly from FW, especially carbohydrate, because it increased the pH values, maintained low OPR levels, and increased microbial number and diversity in the fermentation systems.

The receptor tyrosine kinase rearranged during transfection (RET) plays pivotal roles in several cancers, including thyroid carcinoma and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Currently, there are several FDA-approved RET inhibitors, but their indication is limited to thyroid cancer, and none can overcome their gatekeeper mutants (V804L and V804M). Here, we report the discovery of 9x representing a new chemotype of potent and selective RET inhibitors, using a rational design strategy of type II kinase inhibitors.

Background And Purpose: Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) plays a key role in B-cell receptor signalling by regulating cell proliferation and survival in various B-cell malignancies. Covalent low-MW BTK kinase inhibitors have shown impressive clinical efficacy in B-cell malignancies. However, the mutant Btk poses a major challenge in the management of B-cell malignancies by disrupting the formation of the covalent bond between BTK and irreversible inhibitors, such as ibrutinib.
