Progressive lung function decline is a hallmark of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Airway dysbiosis occurs in COPD, but whether it contributes to disease progression remains unknown. Here, we show, through a longitudinal analysis of two cohorts involving four UK centers, that baseline airway dysbiosis in COPD patients, characterized by the enrichment of opportunistic pathogenic taxa, associates with a rapid forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV) decline over 2 years.

Disinhibition of Mesolimbic Dopamine Circuit by the Lateral Hypothalamus Regulates Pain Sensation.

Our recent study demonstrated the critical role of the mesolimbic dopamine (DA) circuit and its brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) signaling in mediating neuropathic pain. The present study aims to investigate the functional role of GABAergic inputs from the lateral hypothalamus (LH) to the ventral tegmental area (VTA; LH→VTA) in regulating the mesolimbic DA circuit and its BDNF signaling underlying physiological and pathologic pain. We demonstrated that optogenetic manipulation of the LH→VTA projection bidirectionally regulated pain sensation in naive male mice.

The impact of chronic diseases on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) is understudied. Latent profile analysis (LPA) can identify profiles of AYAs based on their HRQOL scores reflecting physical, mental, and social well-being. This paper will (1) demonstrate how to use LPA to identify profiles of AYAs based on their scores on multiple HRQOL indicators; (2) explore associations of demographic and clinical factors with LPA-identified HRQOL profiles of AYAs; and (3) provide guidance on the selection of adult or pediatric versions of Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System® (PROMIS®) in AYAs.

Background: The American Board of Anesthesiology piloted 3-option multiple-choice items (MCIs) for its 2020 administration of 150-item subspecialty in-training examinations for Critical Care Medicine (ITE-CCM) and Pediatric Anesthesiology (ITE-PA). The 3-option MCIs were transformed from their 4-option counterparts, which were administered in 2019, by removing the least effective distractor. The purpose of this study was to compare physician performance, response time, and item and exam characteristics between the 4-option and 3-option exams.

Genome-Wide Association Study for Seed Dormancy Using Re-Sequenced Germplasm under Multiple Conditions in Rice.

Seed dormancy is a key factor used to determine seed germination in rice production. So far, only a few genes controlling seed dormancy have been reported, and the genetic mechanism of rice seed dormancy is still elusive. In this study, a population of 195 diverse re-sequenced accessions from 40 countries was evaluated for the seed germination rate (GR) without dormancy breaking (WDB) as a control and under dry heating (DH) and gibberellic acid (GA) treatments, as dormancy breaking agents to identify QTLs for seed dormancy.
