Quantum heat engines and refrigerators are open quantum systems, whose dynamics can be well understood using a non-Hermitian formalism. A prominent feature of non-Hermiticity is the existence of exceptional points (EPs), which has no counterpart in closed quantum systems. It has been shown in classical systems that dynamical encirclement in the vicinity of an EP, whether the loop includes the EP or not, could lead to chiral mode conversion.

Attoclock provides a powerful tool for probing the ultrafast electron dynamics in strong laser fields. However, this technique has remained restricted to single electron or sequential double ionized electron dynamics. Here, we propose a novel attoclock scheme with a polarization-gated few-cycle laser pulse and demonstrate its application in timing the correlated-electron emission in strong field double ionization of argon.

The approach of shortcuts to adiabaticity enables the effective execution of adiabatic dynamics in quantum information processing with enhanced speed. Owing to the inherent trade-off between dynamical speed and the cost associated with the transitionless driving field, executing arbitrarily fast operations becomes impractical. To understand the accurate interplay between speed and energetic cost in this process, we propose theoretically and verify experimentally a new trade-off, which is characterized by a tightly optimized bound within s-parametrized phase spaces.

College of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences, Hubei Key Laboratory of Electrochemical Power Sources, Wuhan University, Wuhan 430072, China.

Safety hazards caused by flammable electrolytes have been major obstacles to the practical application of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). The adoption of nonflammable all-phosphate electrolytes can effectively improve the safety of SIBs; however, traditional low-concentration phosphate electrolytes are not compatible with carbon-based anodes. Herein, we report an anion-cation interaction modulation strategy to design low-concentration phosphate electrolytes with superior physicochemical properties.

Assessing the effectiveness of nanomedicines involves evaluating the drug content at the target site. Currently, most research focuses on monitoring the signal responses from loaded drugs, neglecting the changes caused by the nanohosts. Here, we propose a strategy to quantitatively evaluate the content of loaded drugs by detecting the signal variations resulting from the alterations in the microenvironment of the nanohosts.

A long-standing hypothesis proposes that certain RNA(s) must exhibit structural roles in microtubule assembly. Here, we identify a long noncoding RNA (TubAR) that is highly expressed in cerebellum and forms RNA-protein complex with TUBB4A and TUBA1A, two tubulins clinically linked to cerebellar and myelination defects. TubAR knockdown in mouse cerebellum causes loss of oligodendrocytes and Purkinje cells, demyelination, and decreased locomotor activity.

Although entanglement is considered as an essential resource for quantum information processing, whether entanglement helps for energy conversion or output in the quantum regime is still lack of experimental witness. Here, we report on an energy-conversion device operating as a quantum engine with the working medium acted by two entangled ions confined in a harmonic potential. The two ions are entangled by virtually coupling to one of the vibrational modes shared by the two ions, and the quantum engine couples to a quantum load, which is another shared vibrational mode.

Fast collective motions are widely present in biomolecules, but their functional relevance remains unclear. Herein, we reveal that fast collective motions of backbone are critical to the water transfer of aquaporin Z (AqpZ) by using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ssNMR) spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. A total of 212 residue site-specific dipolar order parameters and 158 N spin relaxation rates of the backbone are measured by combining the C- and H-detected multidimensional ssNMR spectra.

Strong-field photoelectron holography in the subcycle limit.

Light Sci Appl

Strong-field photoelectron holography is promising for the study of electron dynamics and structure in atoms and molecules, with superior spatiotemporal resolution compared to conventional electron and X-ray diffractometry. However, the application of strong-field photoelectron holography has been hindered by inter-cycle interference from multicycle fields. Here, we address this challenge by employing a near-single-cycle field to suppress the inter-cycle interference.

Most proteins perform their functions in crowded and complex cellular environments where weak interactions are ubiquitous between biomolecules. These complex environments can modulate the protein folding energy landscape and hence affect protein stability. NMR is a nondestructive and effective method to quantify the kinetics and equilibrium thermodynamic stability of proteins at an atomic level within crowded environments and living cells.

Herein, we report a highly selective production route for butadiene from γ-valerolactone over zeolite catalysts. The catalytic performance of eight zeolites with different framework topologies were compared, revealing that zeolites with narrower 10-membered ring channels exhibit enhanced selectivity of butadiene. Specifically, ZSM-35 and ZSM-22, featuring the narrowest 10-membered ring channels, demonstrate the highest butadiene selectivity to 61 % and 59 %, respectively.

Precise Distance Control and Functionality Adjustment of Frustrated Lewis Pairs in Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Key Laboratory of Biomedical Polymers Ministry of Education, College of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences, Wuhan University, Wuhan 430072, China.

We report the construction of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) in a metal-organic framework (MOF), where both Lewis acid (LA) and Lewis base (LB) are fixed to the backbone. The anchoring of a tritopic organoboron linker as LA and a monotopic linker as LB to separate metal oxide clusters in a tetrahedron geometry allows for the precise control of distance between them. As the type of monotopic LB linker varies, pyridine, phenol, aniline, and benzyl alcohol, a series of 11 FLPs were constructed to give fixed distances of 7.

Interchain-expanded extra-large-pore zeolites.

Stable aluminosilicate zeolites with extra-large pores that are open through rings of more than 12 tetrahedra could be used to process molecules larger than those currently manageable in zeolite materials. However, until very recently, they proved elusive. In analogy to the interlayer expansion of layered zeolite precursors, we report a strategy that yields thermally and hydrothermally stable silicates by expansion of a one-dimensional silicate chain with an intercalated silylating agent that separates and connects the chains.
