The cytoplasmic genomes of plants and animals often fail to track species boundaries. However, the mechanisms responsible for such patterns are poorly understood, in part because few studies have linked cytoplasmic variation to phenotypic traits or environmental differences. Here, we use 1,554 previously published and 185 new whole genome sequences representing 14 taxa from the sunflower genus , 91 phenotypic traits measured in common gardens, and 39 environmental variables to test for environmental and phenotypic effects of cytoplasmic genome variation.

Ferroptosis is closely linked with various pathophysiological processes, including aging, neurodegeneration, ischemia-reperfusion injury, viral infection and, notably, cancer progression; however, its post-translational regulatory mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Here we revealed a crucial role of S-palmitoylation in regulating ferroptosis through glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), a pivotal enzyme that mitigates lipid peroxidation. We identified that zinc finger DHHC-domain containing protein 8 (zDHHC8), an S-acyltransferase that is highly expressed in multiple tumors, palmitoylates GPX4 at Cys75.

The processing techniques of camellia oil, containing freshly squeezed (FSCO), refined (DFCO), cold-pressed (OFCO), and hot-pressed (RFCO), significantly influence flavor compounds and organoleptic properties. In this study, the preference for FSCO and RFCO was revealed by sensory evaluation due to the "fruity" and "roasted" flavors, respectively. Flavor differences among oils were accurately distinguished by the E-nose.

Upon RNA virus infection, the signaling adaptor MAVS forms functional prion-like aggregates on the mitochondrial outer membrane, which serve as a central hub that links virus recognition to downstream antiviral innate immune responses. Multiple mechanisms regulating MAVS activation have been revealed; however, the checkpoint governing MAVS aggregation remains elusive. Here, we demonstrated that the palmitoylation of MAVS at cysteine 79 (C79), which is catalyzed mainly by the palmitoyl S-acyltransferase ZDHHC12, was essential for MAVS aggregation and antiviral innate immunity upon viral infection in macrophages.

The Glycerol monolaurate (GML) oleogel was induced using Camellia oil by slowly raising the temp to the melting point (MP) of GML. Whey protein isolate (WPI) solution with different ratios was composited with GML oleogel by emulsion template methods, forming dense spines and honeycomb-like networks and impressed with an adjustable composite structure. Textural results showed that compared with single GML-based oleogels, the GML/WPI composite oleogels had the advantages of high hardness and molding, and structural stability.
