Intermedin 1-53 Inhibits Myocardial Fibrosis in Rats by Down-Regulating Transforming Growth Factor-β.

BACKGROUND Myocardial fibrosis is the result of persistent anoxia and ischemic myocardial fibers caused by coronary atherosclerotic stenosis, which lead to heart failure, threatening the patient's life. This study aimed to explore the regulatory role of intermedin 1-53 (IMD1-53) in cardiac fibrosis using neonatal rat cardiac fibroblasts and a myocardial infarction (MI) rat model both in vitro and in vivo. MATERIAL AND METHODS The Western blot method was used to detect the protein expression of collagen I and collagen III in myocardial fibroblasts.

Swimming attenuates inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis in a rat model of dextran sulfate sodium-induced chronic colitis.

Increasing evidence suggests that regular physical exercise suppresses chronic inflammation. However, the potential inhibitory effects of swimming on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced chronic colitis, and its underlying mechanisms, remain unclear. In this study, rats were orally administered DSS to induce chronic colitis, and subsequently treated with or without swimming exercise.

Prevalence and correlates of problematic smartphone use in a large random sample of Chinese undergraduates.

Background: Smartphones are becoming a daily necessity for most undergraduates in Mainland China. Because the present scenario of problematic smartphone use (PSU) is largely unexplored, in the current study we aimed to estimate the prevalence of PSU and to screen suitable predictors for PSU among Chinese undergraduates in the framework of the stress-coping theory.

Methods: A sample of 1062 undergraduate smartphone users was recruited by means of the stratified cluster random sampling strategy between April and May 2015.

Currently, the leaf is used not only as an herbal tea to reduce lipid level and control body weight, but also as a major ingredient in some lipid-lowering Chinese patented medicines. Our previous study demonstrated that the alkaloid fraction (AF) of the herb has a strong inhibitory effect on CYP2D6 isoenzyme activity in vitro.

Detection of PCT and urinary β -MG enhances the accuracy for localization diagnosing pediatric urinary tract infection.

Objective: The purpose of this article was to investigate whether the combination of urinary beta 2 microglobulin (urinary β -MG) and procalcitonin (PCT) diagnosis could enhance the localization diagnostic precision of pediatric urinary tract infection comparing with single diagnosis.

Methods: A study was conducted in the Nephrology Department of Wuhan women and children's health care centre. This study incorporated 85 participants, including 35 children who were diagnosed as upper urinary tract infection (UUTI) with the symptom of fever and 50 children who conducted lower urinary tract infection (LUTI).

The efficacy of mobile phone-based text message interventions ('Happy Quit') for smoking cessation in China.

Background: Considering the extreme shortage of smoking cessation services in China, and the acceptability, feasibility and efficacy of mobile phone-based text message interventions for quitting smoking in other countries, here we propose a study of "the efficacy of mobile phone-based text message interventions ('Happy Quit') for smoking cessation in China". The primary objective of this proposed project is to assess whether a program of widely accessed mobile phone-based text message interventions ('Happy Quit') will be effective at helping people in China who smoke, to quit. Based on the efficacy of previous studies in smoking cessation, we hypothesize that 'Happy Quit' will be an effective, feasible and affordable smoking cessation program in China.

Influences of Co Doping Effect on the Structural Properties of a Single Graphene Film.

The effect of cobalt doping on the structural properties of a single graphene film were determined by use of SEM, temperature-dependent Raman technique, XRD and XPS measurements. XRD and SEM measurements revealed that Co nanoparticles formed on the surface of the single layer of graphene. The XPS results also revealed the existence of bivalent Cobalt ions.

Cognitive-enhancing effects of hydrolysate of polygalasaponin in SAMP8 mice.

Objectives: The aim of the study is to evaluate the cognitive-enhancing effects of hydrolysate of polygalasaponin (HPS) on senescence accelerate mouse P8 (SAMP8) mice, an effective Alzheimer's disease (AD) model, and to research the relevant mechanisms.

Methods: The cognitive-enhancing effects of HPS on SAMP8 mice were assessed using Morris water maze (MWM) and step-through passive avoidance tests. Then N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor subunit expression for both the cortex and hippocampus of mice was observed using Western blotting.

Cytochromes P450 Inhibitory Excipient-Based Self-Microemulsions for the Improved Bioavailability of Protopanaxatriol and Protopanaxadiol: Preparation and Evaluation.

Protopanaxatriol and protopanaxadiol exhibit limited oral bioavailability due to the poor solubility and intestinal cytochromes P450-mediated metabolism. This study set out to develop a novel cytochromes P450 inhibitory excipient(s)-based self-microemulsion to encapsulate protopanaxatriol and protopanaxadiol so as to enhance the bioavailability by inhibiting intestinal metabolism. After screening the inhibitory effect of pharmaceutical excipients on the cytochromes P450-mediated metabolism, two self-microemulsions, SME-1 and SME-2, with similar physicochemical properties were prepared by using either active inhibitory excipients or corresponding inactive excipients.

Prospective cohort study of the risk factors for stress fractures in Chinese male infantry recruits.

Objective: To determine potential risk factors that could predict stress fractures over an 8-week basic military training in Chinese male infantry recruits.

Methods: Recruits from three infantry units enrolled in this prospective study. At baseline, demographic data, personal history of stress fractures, mean duration of weekly exercise and smoking history were recorded on questionnaires and blood samples taken for analysis of bone turnover biomarkers and genetic factors.

Metabolism profiles of nuciferine in rats using ultrafast liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry.

Nuciferine (NF) is one of the main aporphine alkaloids existing in the traditional Chinese medicine Folium Nelumbinis (lotus leaves). Modern pharmacological studies have demonstrated that NF has a broad spectrum of bioactivities, such as anti-HIV and anti-hyperlipidemic effects, and has been recommended as a leading compound for new drug development. Microbial community dynamics in Baolige oilfield during MEOR treatment, revealed by Illumina MiSeq sequencing.

This study was carried out to understand microbial diversity and function in the microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) process and to assess the impact of MEOR treatment on the microbial community in an oil reservoir. The Illumina MiSeq-based method was used to investigate the structure and dynamics of the microbial community in a MEOR-treated block of the Baolige oilfield, China. The results showed that microbial diversity was high and that 23 phyla occurred in the analyzed samples.

Lotus Leaf Alkaloid Extract Displays Sedative-Hypnotic and Anxiolytic Effects through GABAA Receptor.

Lotus leaves have been used traditionally as both food and herbal medicine in Asia. Open-field, sodium pentobarbital-induced sleeping and light/dark box tests were used to evaluate sedative-hypnotic and anxiolytic effects of the total alkaloids (TA) extracted from the herb, and the neurotransmitter levels in the brain were determined by ultrafast liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The effects of picrotoxin, flumazenil, and bicuculline on the hypnotic activity of TA, as well as the influence of TA on Cl(-) influx in cerebellar granule cells, were also investigated.
