Characterization of biogeochemical cycles in agricultural watersheds: Integrating regional modelling assessment with downstream water quality.

J Environ Manage

September 2025

Ecological Modelling Laboratory, Department of Physical and Environmental Sciences, University of Toronto Scarborough, Toronto, Ontario, M1C 1A4, Canada. Electronic address:

Agriculture intensification represents an essential strategy to ensure food security for the growing human population, but it also poses considerable environmental concerns. Climate change and associated projections of an increased frequency of extreme precipitation and runoff events may amplify nutrient dynamics along the watershed-lake continuum, and could further exacerbate the poor water quality conditions downstream. Identifying hotspot locations with higher propensity for sediment and nutrient export and designing effective mitigation measures at the source is more critical than ever.

The occurrence of tectonic plate reorganization events is evident throughout the geologic record and appears to be associated with the cessation of mature and/or initiation of new subduction. Subduction initiation that produced the bend in the Hawaii-Emperor seamount chain resulted in the most recent upheaval of plate motion and engendered dramatic changes in plate velocities. Here, applying a method for identifying plate boundaries in a numerical global mantle convection model, we calculate Euler vector time series of self-consistently generated plates over a period of approximately 144 Myr.

Background: The receptor-like kinases (RLKs) are the largest family of proteins in plants. Characterized members play critical roles in diverse processes from growth to immunity, and yet the majority do not have a known function. Assigning function to RLKs poses a significant challenge due to the specificity of ligand recognition and because of the often pleiotropic or redundant functions RLKs possess.

Nanoplastics are emerging environmental pollutants that threaten soil microbial communities, especially plant growth-promoting bacteria. Here, we investigate whether sugar maple biochar-widely recognized for its soil amendment benefits-can reduce nanoplastic toxicity. Using confocal microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and fluorescence spectroscopy, we characterized the interactions between biochar and nanoplastics and observed extensive nanoplastic aggregation on biochar surfaces.

Ericoid mycorrhizal fungal metacommunity facilitates closely related Rhododendron species coexistence.

New Phytol

August 2025

State Key Laboratory of Plant Diversity and Specialty Crops, Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Kunming, 650201, China.

The structural and ecological significance of ericoid mycorrhizal (ErM) fungi is well recognized. Yet, it remains unknown whether the coexistence of ericaceous plants is facilitated by their symbioses with ErM fungi. Here, we use Rhododendron (Ericaceae) as a model to investigate how phylogenetic and functional limiting similarity, or facilitation through ErM fungal metacommunity, influences their co-occurrence in mountain ecosystems.

Role of the dopamine D3 receptor in the core and shell of the nucleus accumbens in conditioned modulation of memory consolidation.

Neuropharmacology

August 2025

Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, University of Guelph, Canada; Department of Psychology, University of Toronto Scarborough, Canada. Electronic address:

There is evidence suggesting that the effect of conditioned stimuli (CS) on memory consolidation is mediated by the dopamine D3 receptor (D3R). The current study explored the hypothesis that D3Rs located in the nucleus accumbens core (NAcC) and shell (NAcS) are involved in this effect. Therefore, using male Sprague-Dawley rats and the object recognition memory task, it was tested whether: 1) intra-NAcC or intra-NAcS infusions of the selective D3R antagonist SB-277011A (0, 1 and 4 μg/side) could block facilitation of memory consolidation by a CS stablished through optimal conditioning on a signaled active avoidance task; and 2) intra-NAcC or intra-NAcS infusions of the D3R agonist 7-OH-DPAT (0 and 10 μg/side) could enhance conditioned memory facilitation by a CS which was ineffective on its own due to suboptimal conditioning.

University of Toronto, Department of Physiology, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, Medical Sciences Building 3rd Floor, 1 King's College Circle, Toronto, ON, M5S 1A8, Canada.

Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) are widely used in health science education because they are an efficient way to evaluate knowledge from simple recall to complex clinical reasoning. The creation of high-quality MCQs, however, can be time-consuming and requires expertise in question composition. Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), especially large language models (LLMs), offer the potential to allow for the rapid generation of high-quality, consistent, and course-specific MCQs.

In this review, we discuss how advances in infant electroencephalography (EEG) in the last quarter century have allowed developmental scientists to revisit old questions and ask new ones about early auditory perception. We specifically focus on integrating research on language and music perception given both methodological and theoretical overlaps. We discuss how EEG's high temporal resolution has provided insights into how infants process subtle changes in language and music, detecting phonemic contrasts, rhythmic patterns, and melodic cues sometimes even before these abilities are observable behaviorally.

Biological invasions are one of the major drivers of biodiversity decline and have been shown to have far-reaching consequences for society and the economy. Preventing the introduction and spread of alien species represents the most effective solution to reducing their impacts on nature and human well-being. However, implementing effective solutions requires a good understanding of where the species are established and how biological invasions develop over time.
