Diabetes mellitus (DM) is reportedly a significant risk factor for intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD). Incretin system and particularly glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) because of its glucose-lowering effects has become an important target in therapeutic strategies of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Liraglutide is a GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonist with glucoregulatory and insulinotropic functions as well as regulatory functions on cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis.

Purpose: There is a close correlation between menopausal age and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Some research suggests that this risk is attributable to an elevated urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR), but further work is needed to explore the link between UACR and age at time of menopause.

Patients And Methods: Data analyzed in the present study were derived from seven regional centers participating in the REACTION study.

Objective: This meta-analysis was performed to investigate whether percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) had a superior effect than other surgeries in the treatment of patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH).

Method: We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science through February 2018 to identify eligible studies that compared the effects and complications between PELD and other surgical interventions in LDH. The outcomes included success rate, recurrence rate, complication rate, operation time, hospital stay, blood loss, visual analog scale (VAS) score for back pain and leg pain, 12-item Short Form Health Survey (SF12) physical component score, mental component score, Japanese Orthopaedic Association Score, Oswestry Disability Index.

To evaluate the effect of nutritional status on clinical and pathological data for stage Ⅰ-Ⅳ gastric cancer patients from the cancer survival investigation information. A database of 302 consecutive gastric cancer patients underwent radical gastrectomy was enrolled in this study. The clinical and pathological information of them were corrected and the relationship between the nutritional index and the patients survival time were analyzed by a Cox regression model.

Pre-existing Health Conditions and Epicardial Adipose Tissue Volume: Potential Risk Factors for Myocardial Injury in COVID-19 Patients.

Front Cardiovasc Med

January 2021

Division of Cardiology, Department of Internal Medicine, The Center for Cardiovascular Biology and Atherosclerosis Research, McGovern Medical School, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Houston, TX, United States.

Myocardial injury is a life-threatening complication of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Pre-existing health conditions and early morphological alterations may precipitate cardiac injury and dysfunction after contracting the virus. The current study aimed at assessing potential risk factors for COVID-19 cardiac complications in patients with pre-existing conditions and imaging predictors.

Objectives: In China, for economic reasons, induction regimes for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) often involve domestically produced idarubicin (IDA) rather than imported IDA. Our objective was to compare the effectiveness of induction regimens in combination with cytarabine; involving imported or domestic IDA, or daunorubicin (DNR).

Methods: The study was conducted from 1 July 2012 to 30 November 2015 at Baoding No.

Highly sensitive and easy detection method for Alzheimer's disease (AD) with a suitable biomarker is mandatory for preventing the factors resulting from AD. This research reports a modified ELISA with graphene for the detection of AD biomarker amyloid beta (Aβ) oligomer. Gold nanoparticle (AuNP) conjugated aptamer was used as the capture probe and attached on ELISA-graphene oxide surface through the amine linker.

Background: Neferine (NEF) is nontoxic, bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid is derived from the seed embryo of lotus, a familiar medicinal plant. Although several mechanisms have been planned, an evident antitumor action pathway of NEF on the oral tumor is still not known. In the current study, we aimed at investigating the protecting effect of NEF against experimental oral carcinoma and clarify its possible mechanism through the induction of apoptosis, proliferation, and inflammatory signaling pathways.

Two major treatment strategies employed in non-small cell lung cancer, NSCLC, are tyrosine kinase inhibitors, TKIs, and immune checkpoint inhibitors, ICIs. The choice of strategy is based on heterogeneous biomarkers that can dynamically change during therapy. Thus, there is a compelling need to identify comprehensive biomarkers that can be used longitudinally to help guide therapy choice.

Article Synopsis
  • This study conducted a meta-analysis to explore the link between vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), previously inconclusive in multiple studies.
  • A systematic search identified 39 relevant studies, and results showed no overall significant association, but subgroup analyses indicated ethnic variations, with specific polymorphisms linked to T1DM risk in African and American populations.
  • The findings suggest that VDR gene polymorphisms may influence T1DM susceptibility, emphasizing the need for more targeted ethnic-specific research.

Aims: Adropin (AD), copeptin (CP), neprilysin (NEP) and chitotriosidase (CHIT1) have been associated with the regulation of vascular endothelial function. In this work, we analyzed the plasma concentrations of cytokines (AD, CP, NEP and CHIT1) in type 2 diabetic patients with or without retinopathy (DR) to predict the risk of DR for diabetic patients.

Method: A total of 392 patients diagnosed as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and 120 healthy volunteers as a control group were enrolled in this study.

Pediatric Patient With a Giant Vertebrobasilar Dissecting Aneurysm Successfully Treated With Three Pipeline Embolization Devices.

Front Neurol

July 2020

Department of Interventional Neuroradiology, Beijing Neurosurgical Institute and Beijing Tian Tan Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

Pediatric intracranial dissecting aneurysms are rare (1), and treating this type of aneurysm in the vertebrobasilar circulation is more difficult. As an off-label application, pipeline embolization devices (PEDs) for posterior circulation dissecting aneurysms are reported to have good therapeutic effect (2). However, studies have found that PEDs for large or giant vertebrobasilar dissecting aneurysms have a poor effect and are associated with disastrous consequences for patients (3).

Purpose: Renal inflammatory response is involved in the development and progression of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). We sought to evaluate pentraxin-3 (PTX3) and adropin variability as inflammatory markers among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with different urinary albumin, and to examine if these factors assist in the early diagnosis of diabetic kidney disease.

Methods: We enrolled 447 T2DM patients and 100 healthy non-diabetic control subjects in this study.

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) is known to cause severe encephalitis in juvenile pigs and various non-native hosts; recent evidences suggest that PRV might cause encephalitis in humans. In a multicenter cohort study in China, next-generation sequencing of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was performed to detect pathogens in all patients with clinically suspected central nervous system infections. This study involved all the patients whose CSF samples were positive for PRV-DNA; their clinical features were evaluated, and species-specific PCR and serological tests were sequentially applied for validation.
