Although there was a rapidly growing body of literature on human-animal relationships during the COVID-19 pandemic, little attention was given to accounts of animal death through and beyond COVID-19. This paper reports on two connected studies undertaken after the end of COVID-19 restrictions in the United Kingdom, here focusing specifically on animal companion loss. From an online survey of 667 participants, 354 responded to an open-ended question about the loss of an animal.

The lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) offers significant kinetic advantages over the adsorbed oxygen mechanism. Anion intercalation induces the LOM in NiOOH by enhancing the covalency of lattice oxygen through the modulation of the metal-oxygen electronic state. The relationships between doping mechanisms, such as the size and valence state of anions and the kinetics of the OER, have been clarified.

The rotation of the bacterial flagellum is powered by the MotAB stator complex, which converts ion flux into torque. Despite its central role in flagellar function, the evolutionary origin and structural diversity of this system remain poorly understood. Here, we present the first comprehensive phylogenetic and structural characterization of MotAB and its closest non-flagellar homologs.

Multi-layered and orthogonal recognition is an excellent route to controlled molecular complexity. Here we report a series of heteroleptic complexes where two ligands pair together at a palladium(II) metal centre in complementary fashion and with orthogonality to others pairs. This complementarity is driven in part through hydrogen-bonding acceptor or donor sites proximal to the coordination domain (either DD:AA or AD:DA).

Consumption of mango has been associated with a number of beneficial effects on health which have been attributed to phenolic catabolites originating from (poly)phenols following ingestion. To investigate the origins of potentially bioactive phenolic catabolites, ileostomists and subjects with a full gastrointestinal tract on a low(poly)phenol diet ingested a mango pulp purée containing 426 μmol of (poly)phenols consisting mainly of gallotannins and cinnamic acids, along with 231 μmol of the aromatic amino acids phenylalanine and tyrosine. Over a 24 h period post-mango intake plasma and urine were collected and analysed by UHPLC-HRMS.

Background And Importance: Emergency airway management in the emergency department (ED) is a high-risk procedure associated with patient outcomes. First-attempt success is a widely recognized quality metric, as multiple attempts are associated with an increased risk of peri-intubation complications. In Brazil, where emergency medicine is a recently established specialty, many ED are staffed by physicians without formal emergency medicine training.

Rationale: Clinical innovation-where physicians develop and use novel interventions that differ significantly from standard practice and that have not been shown to be sufficiently safe or effective for regular use in healthcare systems-has the potential to transform patient care and drive medical advancement. However, it is not without risk. It is important, therefore, that policymakers and healthcare institutions develop strategies to encourage responsible clinical innovation.

Although the surface micro-ornamentation of the scales within the skin of snakes has been the subject of many previous studies, there has been little work done on the spectacle, a protective (keratinised) goggle separated from the underlying cornea by a sub-spectacular space. The surface ultrastructure of the "Oberhäutchen" of the spectacle is examined in nine species of snakes (five aquatic and four terrestrial) using light and electron microscopy, micro-computed tomography and gel-based profilometry. Significant topographic differences in cell size (increases of between 5.

Background: Limited treatment options exist for infrapopliteal disease in patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI), a condition associated with a high risk of limb loss. Interventional management of diseased infrapopliteal vessels with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) is associated with high rates of restenosis and reintervention. In the LIFE-BTK trial, the drug-eluting resorbable scaffold (DRS) demonstrated superior 12-month efficacy compared with PTA in a selected CLTI population with predominantly noncomplex, mildly to moderately calcified lesions.
