As an effective ECL emitter, tetraphenylethene (TPE)-based molecules have recently been reported with aggregation-induced electrochemiluminescence (AIECL) property, while it is still a big challenge to control its aggregation states and obtain uniform aggregates with intense ECL emission. In this study, we develop three TPE derivatives carrying a pyridinium group, an alkyl chain, and a quaternary ammonium group via the Menschutkin reaction. The resulting molecules exhibit significantly red-shifted FL and enhanced ECL emissions due to the tunable reduction of the energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs). More importantly, the amphiphilicity of the as-developed molecules enables their spontaneous self-assembly into well-controlled spherical nanoaggregates, and the ECL intensity of nanoaggregates with 3 -CH- (named as C) is 17.0-fold higher compared to that of the original 4-(4-(1,2,2-triphenylvinyl)phenyl)pyridine (TPP) molecule. These cationic nanoaggregates demonstrate a high affinity toward bacteria, and an ECL sensor for the profiling of () was developed with a broad linear range and good selectivity in the presence of an -specific aptamer. This study provides an effective way to enhance the ECL emission of TPE molecules through their derivatization and a simple way to prepare well-controlled AIECL nanoaggregates for ECL application.

Compared with efficient anodic luminol electrochemiluminescence (ECL), the disadvantage of cathodic ECL is that luminol cannot be electrochemically oxidized in a direct manner, and the conversion efficiency of dissolved oxygen (DO) as the coreactant to reactive oxygen species (ROS) is poor, which limits its application. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a functional catalyst suitable for the luminol-DO ECL system to directly trigger cathodic ECL. In this study, a coordination microenvironment modulation strategy was proposed.

Ginseng exosomes are a kind of promising extracellular vesicle containing unique bioactive components. However, the investigation on ginseng-derived exosomes is still in the initial stage. This study developed a photonic crystal-based Bragg scattering coupling electrochemiluminescence (BSC-ECL) biosensor for detection of miRNA396a-3p in exosome-like nanoparticles (GENs) and ginseng exosomes (Gexos).

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) imaging through closed bipolar nanoelectrode arrays (BPnEAs) has emerged as a promising method for in situ label-free wide-field electrochemical imaging. In this study, a cathodic ECL system based on [Ru(bpz)]/SO is combined with the BPnEAs fabricated on silicon nitride membrane windows through focused ion beam nanofabrication, enabling effective bipolar imaging of heterogeneous anodic electrocatalytic reactions. The shape, distribution, size, and material composition of individual electrodes within the array can be precisely controlled.

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is rapidly emerging as an excellent electrochemical analytical technique for the specific and sensitive detection of various biomarkers and hazardous trace metals. Among ECL emitters, gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) have proven to be excellent luminophores due to their remarkable luminescent properties, stability, and biocompatibility. However, the low ECL efficiency of AuNCs precludes their application in ultrasensitive biosensing.

Rational design of both mechanistic pathways and material compositions is essential to advance COF-based electrochemiluminescence (ECL) systems. In this study, aggregation-induced emission covalent organic framework (AIE-COF) nanoprobes with excellent ECL performance were developed based on Tb-functionalized covalent organic framework (Tb@A-COF). The Tb@A-COF system demonstrates enhanced ECL performance through synergistic integration of three complementary mechanisms: (1) (4',4',4',4'-(1,2-ethenediylidene)tetrakis [1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carboxaldehyde (ETBC) ligands function as antenna-like sensitizers that amplify luminescence intensity by 14.
