Association between depression and three key COVID-19-related outcomes: The SHARE study.

This study investigated the potential associations between preexisting depression and COVID-19 vaccination, SARS-CoV-2 infection risk, and long COVID among middle-aged and older Europeans, based on the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). A total of 31,115 participants were included to assess the relationship between depression and COVID-19 vaccination 11,146 to evaluate depression-related SARS-CoV-2 infection risk, and 11,142 to study the impact of depression on the occurrence of long COVID. Multivariable logistic model was performed and odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated.

Evaluating Complications of Surgical Reconstructive Approaches for Plantar Melanoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Reconstruction of plantar melanoma presents a surgical challenge due to unique qualities of plantar soft tissue and its role as a weight-bearing surface. Therefore, careful design and selection of coverage option are required to optimize functional recovery and limit postoperative complications on the plantar aspect of the foot. The purpose of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis on the difference in complication rates between 3 coverage options for the reconstruction of plantar melanoma defects: free flaps, pedicle flaps, and skin grafts.

Impact of meteorological factors on influenza incidence in Wuxi from 2014 to 2019: a time series and comprehensive analysis.

Background: Although the association between meteorological factors and influenza was numerously documented, the results are inconsistent, requiring a meta-analysis for synthesis. A recent analysis of the association between influenza and meteorological factors was conducted in Wuxi, China.

Methods: Meteorological data and laboratory-confirmed influenza cases from 2014 to 2019 were collected in Wuxi.

Context: Previous animal studies show association between osteocalcin (OC) and type 2 diabetes-related quantitative traits (QTs), with some suggesting these effects being mediated by adipokines. Replication in humans have been inconsistent.

Objective: We aimed to assess the association between osteocalcin and type 2 diabetes-related QTs, and the roles of adipokines on the association between osteocalcin and glucose metabolism.

Background: Psychological distress is increasing in adolescents and young adults, but comprehensive screening programs are not commonly incorporated into orthopaedic clinical practice. We implemented a screening program for depression symptoms and psychological distress in adolescents and young adults with hip pain. The aims of this study were to report the prevalence and risk factors and determine the relationship with patient-reported pain and dysfunction.

Effects of communication, trust, and respect on shared decision-making: insights from healthcare providers in Chinese public hospitals.

Background: Shared decision making (SDM) could significantly enhance health knowledge, treatment adherence, and doctor-patient relationship, but multifaceted barriers have influenced the implementation of SDM worldwide. There are now few studies on SDM process from the perspective of healthcare workers who often act as the initiators of SDM. Focusing on healthcare providers, this study aimed to explore the mechanism by which provider-patient communication, trust, and respect influenced SDM within the context of China's three-tier public hospital system.

Comparative evaluation of four new immunoassays and LC-MS/MS for the measurement of urinary free cortisol in Cushing's syndrome diagnosis.

Objectives: Twenty-four-hour urinary free cortisol (UFC) measurement is the initial diagnostic test for Cushing's syndrome (CS). We compared UFC determination by four new immunoassays using Autobio A6200, Mindray CL-1200i, Snibe MAGLUMI X8 and Roche 8000 e801 with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Additionally, we evaluated the value of 24-h UFC measured by four direct immunoassays for diagnosing CS.

Lymphedema Is Severely Underdiagnosed in the Arthroplasty Clinic Population: A Bioimpedance Investigation.

Background: Lymphedema is a recognized risk factor for postoperative complications after total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Edema from sources other than lymphedema can also contribute to postoperative complications, as preoperative leg edema is known to worsen postoperatively, prolonging recovery and increasing complication risks. Current evidence surrounding lymphedema in the arthroplasty context is scarce, and historical barriers have hindered its diagnosis.

Nonlinear softening mechanism during inoculated fermentation of Zaoyu based on histology and 4D-DIA proteomics.

Inoculated fermentation softens Zaoyu muscles, but the underlying mechanism remains unknown. Herein, histology and 4D data-independent acquisition (4D-DIA) quantitative proteomics were used to elucidate the texture evolution mechanism of Zaoyu. The hardness and chewiness of Zaoyu decreased early (1-3 days) and increased later (4-6 days), decreasing by 56.

Insight into the formation mechanism and driving forces of one-dimensional flat bands in twisted bilayer black phosphorene.

Using first-principles calculations, this study explores the formation mechanism of one-dimensional (1D) flat bands in twisted bilayer black phosphorene (BP) and investigates the underlying driving forces behind this phenomenon. We show that 1D flat bands arise from the unique distribution of the four high-symmetry stacking configurations of untwisted BP in the twisted BP and the alignment of their band edges along specific directions, a phenomenon we term the anisotropic interlayer stacking effect. Further analysis reveals that interlayer quasi-bonding (QB) interactions and quantum confinement effects drive band edge alignment, with interlayer QB interactions among second-neighbor atomic pairs playing a key role in certain high-symmetry configurations.

Cardiac troponin (cTn) testing plays a crucial role in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, particularly acute coronary syndrome (ACS), which includes acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Background: Oral rehydration solution (ORS) is predominantly utilized in the management of hypovolemic postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). This study aimed to identify effective indicators and develop models to assess the impact of ORS on pediatric patients diagnosed with POTS.

Methods: We utilized a retrospective analysis of totally 158 pediatric patients with POTS receiving a 3-month course of ORS treatment.

Cytokines are crucial in various physiological and pathological processes, especially in inflammatory diseases in mammals. However, the comprehensive identification of cytokines and their potential regulatory functions in the mammary glands of Holstein cows suffering from clinical mastitis (CM) remains only partially understood. This study aimed to systematically identify biological processes (BPs) and differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) associated with cytokines and to explore their functions through the analysis of previously obtained data from data-independent acquisition (DIA) proteomics.

Diversity of microbial communities in cigar filler leaves with different initial water contents analyzed based on high-throughput sequencing technology.

Introduction: To study the composition and succession of bacterial and fungal communities during the fermentation of cigar filler leaves with varying initial water contents, high-throughput sequencing technology was used to sequence the bacterial 16SrRNA genes and fungal ITS1 genes from cigar tobacco leaf samples. This was followed by analyses of microbial -diversity, microbial community structure, and bacterial function prediction based on the sequencing data.

Results: The diversity and richness of microbial communities decreased over time during fermentation under different water content conditions.

A case of transient elevation of creatinine caused by severe hyperuricemia.

Background: To explore the underlying causes of significant fluctuations in creatinine levels within three days due to transient and severe uric acid elevation, and to provide evidence for the interpretation of abnormal test results and clinical diagnosis and management.

Methods: The issues were resolved by retesting the samples, comparing results across different detection platforms, and analyzing the reaction curve. We comprehensively reviewed patients' general conditions, imaging examinations, and treatments.

Advances in laboratory diagnosis of Sjogren's disease in children.

Sjogren's disease (SjD) in children is a rare chronic autoimmune disease not fully recognized due to clinical manifestations different from adults. As such, new objective indicators are needed to supplement existing markers and assist in diagnosis. This review summarizes pathogenesis of SjD in children, current diagnostic criteria and research progress in laboratory diagnosis including serologic testing, saliva and tear analysis, histopathological examination as well as emerging markers of interest.

Decelerating and Accelerating Sulfur Reduction Reaction via P-O-InO Enables High-Performance Li-S Batteries.

The sluggish sulfur reduction reaction (SRR) kinetics of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries seriously limits the development of Li-S batteries. The initial reduction of solid (S) to liquid (soluble LiS (4≤n≤8)) is relatively easy due to the low activation energy, whereas the subsequent conversion of liquid (soluble LiS) to solid (insoluble LiS/LiS) has much higher activation energy, which leads to the accumulation of LiS and exacerbates the shuttle effect of LiS. Therefore, establishing one selective catalyst that decelerates the previous solid-liquid reaction and accelerates the subsequent liquid-solid reaction is essential for rational tailoring of the SRR for improved performance of Li-S batteries, but it represents a daunting challenge.

Isolated very low QRS voltage in at least one frontal lead is associated with vasovagal syncope in children.

Objective: To assess whether isolated very low QRS voltage of ≤0.3 mV in the frontal leads might be a marker for diagnosing paediatric vasovagal syncope and the risk of recurrence.

Methods: We included 118 children with vasovagal syncope, comprising 70 males and 48 females in our retrospective analysis.

Detection of near-surface defects in viscoelastic material based on focused ultrasound thermal effects.

Viscoelastic materials will absorb and dissipate energy under stress, resulting in energy loss and heat generation. The conventional non-destructive testing methods have certain limitations when it comes to detecting near-surface defects in viscoelastic materials. In this paper, a detection method of near-surface defects based on focused ultrasonic thermal effect is proposed.

Research on Component Variation and Factors Affecting Minimum Miscible Pressure in Low Viscosity Oil Miscibility Process.

Miscible gas flooding is an important approach for enhancing the recovery of unconventional oil reservoirs. The injected gas and crude oil components has a significant impact on the minimum miscible pressure. In order to clarify the miscibility characteristics and factors influencing the minimum miscibility pressure, combining PVT and slim tube experiments, the minimum miscibility pressure between Tuha low viscosity oil and different injected gas was measured.

COVID-19 vaccination and long COVID among 50 years older and above European: The role of chronic multimorbidity.

Background And Aims: We aimed to explore the association between coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) vaccination and long COVID according to the status of chronic multimobidity.

Methods: A total of 1913 participants were recruited in the cross-sectional study on the basis of the Survey of Health and Retirement in Europe. COVID-19 vaccination was defined as vaccination within the last 12 months.

Acceleration index predicts efficacy of orthostatic training on postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome in children.

Unlabelled: The objective of this study was to examine the utility of the acceleration index observed in an electrocardiogram (ECG) for the prediction of the effectiveness of orthostatic training in pediatric patients diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). This investigation focused on children diagnosed with POTS and undergoing orthostatic training at the Department of Pediatrics of Peking University First Hospital from January 2012 to October 2022. Specifically, patients hospitalized from January 2012 to December 2019 were included in the training set (54 cases), while those hospitalized from January 2020 to October 2022 were included in the external validation set (37 cases).

Background: Natural products are important sources for the discovery of new biopesticides to control the worldwide destructive pests Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris. Here, insecticidal substances were discovered and characterized from the secondary metabolites of the bio-control microorganism Bacillus velezensis strain ZLP-101, as informed by whole-genome sequencing and analysis.

Results: The genome was annotated, revealing the presence of four potentially novel gene clusters and eight known secondary metabolite synthetic gene clusters.
