Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) following percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), a common kidney stone surgery, highlighting a significant DVT occurrence in 32 out of 100 patients.
  • It identifies independent risk factors for developing DVT post-surgery, such as elevated D-dimer levels, the duration of postoperative bed rest, and the Caprini risk assessment model score.
  • Contrarily, factors like sex, age, and common comorbidities (hypertension, diabetes) were found not to significantly impact DVT risk.

For biosimilar drug development programs, it is essential to demonstrate that there are no clinically significant differences between the proposed biosimilar therapeutic (biosimilar) and its reference product (originator). Based on a stepwise comprehensive comparability exercise, the biosimilar must demonstrate similarity to the originator in physicochemical characteristics, biological activity, pharmacokinetics, efficacy, and safety, including immunogenicity. The goal of the immunogenicity assessment is to evaluate potential differences between the proposed biosimilar product and the originator product in the incidence and severity of human immune responses.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the prognostic value of the ratio of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) to γδT cells (SGR) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to understand their contributions to patient outcomes.
  • A total of 339 HCC patients were analyzed, revealing that a higher SGR is linked to poorer overall and recurrence-free survival, with validation through nomograms.
  • Additionally, positive correlations were found between circulating tumor cell levels and SGR, indicating that patients with high SGR and elevated tumor cells may experience early recurrence.

Article Synopsis
  • Ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase 1 (ENTPD1, or CD39) is a key enzyme that produces immunosuppressive adenosine and influences tumor growth in gastric cancer (GC).
  • The study found that CD39 is significantly more expressed in tumor tissues than in surrounding tissues and that higher levels of CD39 are linked to worse overall survival (OS) for GC patients post-surgery.
  • Additionally, the CD39 FoxP3 regulatory T cell ratio in tumor tissues indicates that these specific Treg cells could be a better predictor of survival compared to FoxP3 Treg cells alone, suggesting they might be a valuable target for cancer immunotherapy.

Amphiphilic poly(ε-caprolactone)--poly[2-(α-d-mannopyranosyloxy) ethyl acrylamide] (PCL--PManEA) block copolymers were synthesized via a combination of ring-opening polymerization (ROP), reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and reactive ester-amine reaction. The PCL--PManEA block copolymers can self-assemble into micelles and encapsulate anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX). To enhance mucoadhesive property of the resulting DOX-loaded PCL--PManEA micelles, Concanavalin A (ConA) lectin was further conjugated with the micelles.

PEG-based hydrogels possess tissue-like mechanical elasticity, solute permeability, cytocompatibility and biocompatibility. In this work, PEG-based hydrogels were prepared via nucleophilic thiol-yne addition between a 4-arm PEG functionalized with thiols (PEG-4-SH) and an electron-deficient alkyne (PEG-4-PP). The as-fabricated hydrogels still possess residual functionalities, enabling a second nucleophilic thiol-yne addition on the gel matrix.

CD39/ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase-1 (ENTPD1) is a cell surface-located, rate-limiting enzyme in the generation of adenosine, and plays a crucial role in tumor development. We examined co-expression of CD39 and CD8in gastric cancer (GC) and showed that the expression of CD39 and CD8 increased significantly in tumor tissues compared to paired peritumor tissues. The expression of tumoral CD39 (tCD39), but not tumoral CD8 (tCD8), was related to overall survival.
