Article Abstract

A biomimetic strategy was developed for the construction of antifouling titanium oxide (Ti(oxide)) surfaces based on host-guest interactions. Two catecholic derivatives, dopamine 4-(phenylazo)benzamide (AZODopa) and dopamine 1-adamantanecarboxamide (AdaDopa) were synthesized and immobilized onto the Ti(oxide) surfaces. The guest molecules-anchored Ti(oxide) surfaces were further functionalized with zwitterionic heptakis[6-deoxy-6-(N-3-sulfopropyl-N,N-dimethylammonium ethyl sulfanyl)]-β-cyclodextrin (SBCD) and hydrophilic β-CD polymer (CDP). The surface elemental compositions and hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties of the Ti(oxide) surfaces before and after modification were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and static water contact angle measurements, respectively. The antifouling properties of the modified Ti(oxide) surfaces were evaluated by the protein adsorption and bacterial adhesion assays. The zwitterionic SBCD- and hydrophilic CDP-functionalized Ti(oxide) surfaces can reduce the adsorption of bovine plasma fibrinogen and adhesion of Escherichia coli, as compared to the pristine and guest molecules-anchored Ti(oxide) surfaces.

A chemical approach to the deposition of thin films on solid surfaces is highly desirable but prone to affect the final properties of the film. To better understand the origin of these complications, the initial stages of the atomic layer deposition of titania films on silica mesoporous materials were characterized. Adsorption-desorption measurements indicated that the films grow in a layer-by-layer fashion, as desired, but initially exhibit surprisingly low densities, about one-quarter of that of bulk titanium oxide.

The development of smart biomedical implants with intrinsic communication system between sensors and actuators, or between implant and patient, remains a challenge for scientific community. Titanium and its alloys, especially Ti6Al4V, are the most used materials in the implant's fabrication. The present work is concerned with implant internal communication printing process and presents a detailed study on titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) surface texturing and their characterization (morphological and chemical) produced by a Nd: YAG laser, aiming to create localized electrical insulation zones, necessary to accommodate electrical communication systems.

Water-fed photo-electrolysis cells equipped with perfluorosulfonic acid (Nafion 115) and quaternary ammonium-based (Fumatech FAA3) ion exchange membranes as separator for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions were investigated. Protonic or anionic ionomer dispersions were deposited on the electrodes to extend the interface with the electrolyte. The photo-anode consisted of a large band-gap Ti-oxide semiconductor.

Ag nanoparticles (NPs) have gained great attention owing to their interesting plasmonic properties and efficient catalysis under visible-light irradiation. In this study, an Ag-based plasmonic catalyst supported on mesoporous silica with isolated and tetrahedrally coordinated single-site Ti-oxide moieties, namely, Ag/Ti-SBA-15, was designed with the purpose of utilizing the broad spectral range of solar energy. The Ti-SBA-15 support allows the deposition of small Ag NPs with a narrow size distribution.
