Interpersonal violence (IPV) has overtaken road traffic collisions as a leading cause of facial fractures, yet regional data from Southern Europe are limited. We retrospectively reviewed all adults (≥18 y) treated between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2022 for radiologically confirmed IPV-related facial fractures. Recorded variables were demographics, AO-CMF (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen-Craniomaxillofacial) fracture site, Facial Injury Severity Score (FISS), presence of facial soft-tissue wounds, treatment modality, and length of stay; associations between variables were explored.

A single-arm meta-analysis was performed to evaluate intraoperative capsular rupture, recurrence, transient and permanent facial nerve palsy, Frey's syndrome, salivary fistula, seroma and hematoma of patients who underwent ED vs.

Methods: A retrospective observational analysis was conducted of 1023 patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for mandibular fractures between 2012 and 2023. Patients were categorised into Early (<3 weeks), Standard (3 weeks), and Delayed (>4 weeks) groups according to the interval before the introduction of a solid diet.

Reconstructing oral cavity defects poses significant challenges due to the variability in defect size and location following tumor resection. Myomucosal flaps provide reliable options for medium-sized defects with reduced donor site morbidity, satisfactory functional and aesthetic outcomes. A retrospective observational study was conducted on 46 patients treated between 2016 and 2022 in two head and neck oncological centers.

Heterologous cortical lamina and titanium preformed meshes are widely used for orbital wall reconstruction; however, comparative data on their outcomes remain limited. : This retrospective observational study analyzed 67 patients treated for orbital fractures at Santa Maria Hospital, Terni, between January 2021 and November 2024.

The risk of occult neck metastases for early-stage OCCs ranges from 15% to 35%, hence the need to develop tools that can support the diagnosis of detecting these neck metastases. Machine learning and radiomic features are emerging as effective tools in this field.

Airway management in maxillofacial trauma is a critical and complex challenge, requiring both secure ventilation and optimal surgical access while minimizing risks to vital structures. This study evaluated the efficacy of submental intubation (SMI) as a minimally invasive alternative to tracheostomy in patients with complex maxillofacial fractures. A retrospective analysis of 52 patients treated between 2015 and 2023 was conducted by comparing clinical outcomes between those who underwent SMI (n = 26) and those who underwent tracheostomy (n = 26).

However, reliance on a compromised occlusion introduces risks of condylar displacement and remodeling. This study employs artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning to analyze condylar behavior, comparing the outcomes of SFA to the traditional surgery-late approach (SLA).

Background: The oral cavity poses challenges in surgical interventions due to its microbial flora. Maxillofacial trauma surgeries are vulnerable to infections, complicating recovery. Traditional methods, including antibiotic prophylaxis, have limitations, highlighting the need for complementary strategies.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation among inflammatory biomarkers, such as the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and the recurrence of pleomorphic adenomas (PAs).
Study Design: This was a retrospective multicenter study. Six hundred eight patients diagnosed with PA and treated by tumor enucleation were included in the analyses.
Multifragmentary and displaced zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures are often a challenge for the maxillofacial surgeon. The aim of this study was to evaluate the improved performance in the management of patients with tripod fracture of the orbito-zygomaticomaxillary complex, using two different methods of virtual surgical planning - virtual reduction and mirroring - compared with traditional management. A cohort of 60 patients was selected and divided into three groups, each consisting of 20 individuals.

This study aimed to assess the diagnostic performance of a machine learning approach that utilized radiomic features extracted from Cone Beam Computer Tomography (CBCT) images and inflammatory biomarkers for distinguishing between Dentigerous Cysts (DCs), Odontogenic Keratocysts (OKCs), and Unicystic Ameloblastomas (UAs). This retrospective study involves 103 patients who underwent jaw lesion surgery in the Maxillofacial Surgery Unit of Federico II University Of Naples between January 2018 and January 2023. Nonparametric Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney and Kruskal Wallis tests were used for continuous variables.

Purpose: PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic fields) founds application in several medical fields to accelerate bone wounds healing and to reduce inflammation. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of PEMF in reducing postoperative swelling and pain in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery.
Methods: A prospective observational monocentric study was conducted on a sample of 30 patients undergone to orthognathic surgery in Maxillofacial Surgery Unit of University of Naples Federico II.
: Revision rhinoplasty is a technically demanding surgical procedure that can put every surgeon in trouble. The main issue of these cases is often an altered osteocartilaginous framework following over-resection during the first intervention. Moreover, the available septal or auricular cartilage for grafting is usually not enough.

Aims: This study aims to describe our refined technique of submental intubation to avoid the recorded intraoperative complications related to tube passage and pilot balloon rupture.
Case Series: This is a retrospective case series of 21 patients with complex maxillofacial trauma who underwent submental intubation from January 2019 to January 2023. All the patients underwent to the same procedure with a new technique of pilot balloon protection: the pilot balloon was not deflated because, once the connector was removed, only the tube was curved and passed through the incision extraorally while the cuff remained inflated.

Background: In recent years, the focus on respiratory disorders has increased, notably on chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), an inflammatory condition of the upper airway that can significantly impact one's quality of life. Interestingly, CRS has emerged as a potential comorbidity in erectile dysfunction (ED). This study aims to assess the impact of endoscopic sinus surgery for CRS on sexual function.

The surgery was performed following a computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) guided workflow, using 3D reconstruction of the mandible and the fibula. After 2 years, when the ossification of the flap was reached and verified by a computed tomography (CT) scan, surgery was performed using a two-step implant rehabilitation, with successful outcomes.
