Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO) has emerged as a promising agent in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) due to its ability to reduce interfacial tension and enhance oil mobility in reservoirs. Water is ubiquitous in oil reservoirs, yet the underlying mechanisms governing scCO transport in the presence of water within nanoscale channels remain inadequately understood. Using molecular dynamics simulations combined with analytical models, this study explores the two-phase flow behavior of scCO and water in confined nanochannels, emphasizing the effects of water saturation () and channel wettability.

There is an immediate demand for identifying birefringent materials that possess substantial optical anisotropy to meet the requirements of photonic applications. Optimizing the orientation of functional modules to achieve enormous anisotropy is essential for enhancing the linear optical properties of birefringent materials. In this research, the arrangement of anionic groups was regulated by the hydrogen bonds formed between group (CNH) and (HCNS) groups, and coupled with the synergistic effect of the repulsive force between the same groups, this resulted in the design and synthesis of the first metal-free trithiocyanurate ultraviolet (UV) birefringent crystal (CNH)HCNS.

Background: This study focuses on uncovering the effects of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors in attenuating arterial stiffness in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and atherosclerosis.

Methods: A total of 71 ACS patients were enrolled in this study from April 1, 2022, to June 31, 2022. Patients were randomly assigned to two groups: one group received statin therapy combined with PCSK9 inhibitors (Evolocumab 140 mg or Alirocumab 75 mg every two weeks) (n = 36), and the other group received statins alone (n = 35).

Limited research has characterized the occurrence of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in indoor microenvironment air. To address this gap, ten OPE congeners were measured in air samples collected from 46 homes, 12 offices, 6 student dormitories, and 60 private cars in Guangzhou, China. Among the four microenvironments, private vehicles exhibited the highest total OPE concentrations (ΣOPEs), with an average of 264.

A versatile scheme has been meticulously engineered for a resonant inelastic X-ray scattering spectrometer, enabling free switching between high throughput configurations with narrow spatial-resolution and low throughput setups boasting broad spatial-resolution capabilities. The high throughput mode enhances signal intensity threefold compared with setups with only the dispersive subassembly, while achieving 2.7 µm resolution within a 16 µm range.

SARS-CoV-2 primarily infects hosts via the respiratory tract, with the mouth and nose as key entry sites. Mucins, essential components of the airway mucosal barrier, function as binding sites for viral adhesion and intercept viral particles as physical barriers. Mucin 1 (MUC1) has been reported to restrict SARS-CoV-2 entry into host cells, but its protective mechanism and structural basis remain unclear.

Fluoride, a typical hard-base ligand in chemical processes, presents a significant ecological threat due to its enrichment in aquatic environment. In this work, the specific affinities of hard-acid metal cations toward F were evaluated from a broad-spectrum perspective with the assistance of density functional theory (DFT), and six metal cations were screened and immobilized on D412 carrier. Batch experiments and mechanism analysis validated the DFT predictions, demonstrating that the ionic size, electrostatic interaction, and electronic hardness of hard-acid cations are related to F removal efficiency.

Two-dimensional (2D) lateral homojunctions possess unique geometries and properties distinct from those of other heterostructures, including perfect lattice matching and clean carrier diffusion channels, showing great potential in beyond-silicon nanoelectronics. However, the direct growth of 2D lateral homojunctions within the same crystal phase and layer remains challenging due to the limited choice of elements. Here, we report the epitaxy growth of semiconducting monolayer WS lateral homojunctions by domain engineering during chemical vapor deposition (CVD).

Background: Despite higher risk of poorer outcomes and potential sub-optimal vaccine effectiveness, people living with HIV (PLWH) are underrepresented in SARS-CoV-2 vaccine trials. We evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of the Ad5-nCoV vaccine (CanSino Biologics Inc./The Beijing Institute of Biotechnology) in PLWH.

Influential node identification is an important and hot topic in the field of complex network science. Classical algorithms for identifying influential nodes are typically based on a single attribute of nodes or the simple fusion of a few attributes. However, these methods perform poorly in real networks with high complexity and diversity.

ObjectiveTo study whether the ability to detect frequency changes or temporal gaps at the early phase postactivation can predict speech perception performance at the late phase postactivation in postlingually deafened cochlear implant (CI) users.MethodPsychophysical tests and event-related potential (ERP) tests were conducted at the third-month postactivation (early phase postactivation, T1) and after 1-year postactivation (late phase postactivation, T2) in 27 postlingually deafened CI users. CI hearing thresholds and speech perception performance were measured at T1 and T2.

Bilayer graphene exhibits intriguing physical and mechanical properties that are suitable for advanced electronic device applications. By introducing a new degree of freedom through interlayer twisting, exotic phenomena such as superconductivity can arise. However, in practical experiments, manual manipulation is often required to fabricate such a configuration and therefore, scaled production of magic angle bilayer graphene is challenging.

Sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy (SIC), as a common complication in the intensive care unit, not only increases the complexity of patient care but also greatly enhances the risk of death. Currently, clinical management of SIC remains challenging, mainly due to the complexity of its pathogenesis and the lack of targeted therapies. Although the specific etiology of SIC is not yet fully understood, existing studies have revealed several vital pathological processes that are intertwined and contribute to the progression of the disease.

The tumor suppressor p53 safeguards against cellular transformation, with its expression regulated by diverse post-translational modifications (PTMs). While polyubiquitination by Mdm2 principally drives its proteasomal degradation, the identity of p53 deubiquitinases (DUBs) remains less well defined. This study investigates the role of the deubiquitinase enzyme OTUD7B in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), where it is notably downregulated and proposed to function as a tumor suppressor.

The future deployment of terawatt-scale proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE) technology necessitates development of an efficient oxygen evolution catalyst with low cost and long lifetime. Currently, the stability of the most active iridium (Ir) catalysts is impaired by dissolution, redeposition, detachment, and agglomeration of Ir species. Here we present a ripening-induced embedding strategy that securely embeds the Ir catalyst in a cerium oxide support.
