Objective: This study aimed to develop a novel synbiotic composed of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum LLY-606 and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) to improve lipid metabolism in obesity.

Design: Through genome-wide analysis using COG and CAZy databases, we identified GOS as a specific growth substrate for Lactiplantibacillus plantarum LLY-606. The efficacy of this synbiotic (LP-GOS) was evaluated in both obese individuals and high-fat diet-induced obese mice.

Carbon fibers, with high modulus of elasticity, tensile strength, and electrical conductivity, can modify the mechanical and electrical properties of cementitious composites, facilitating their practical application in smart infrastructure. This study investigates the effects of carbon nanofibers (including carbon nanotubes, a special type of carbon nanofibers) and micron carbon fibers with different aspect ratios and surface treatments on the uniaxial tensile and electrical properties of cementitious composites. The results demonstrate that appropriate carbon fiber doping markedly improves the uniaxial tensile strength of cementitious composites, with enhancement effects following a gradient trend based on a geometric scale: carbon nanotubes (CNTs) < carbon nanofibers (CNFs) < short-cut carbon fibers (CFs).

The prevalence of obesity is a worldwide phenomenon in all age groups and is associated with aging-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, as well metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. The use of dietary restriction (DR) while avoiding malnutrition has many profound beneficial effects on aging and metabolic health, and dietary protein or specific amino acid (AA) restrictions, rather than overall calorie intake, are considered to play key roles in the effects of DR on host health. Whereas comprehensive reviews of the underlying mechanisms are limited, protein restriction and methionine (Met) restriction improve metabolic health and aging-related neurodegenerative diseases, and may be associated with FGF21, mTOR and autophagy, improved mitochondrial function and oxidative stress.

(S)-2-chlorophenylglycine methyl ester ((S)-1) is a key chiral building block of clopidogrel, which is a widely administered antiaggregatory and antithrombotic drug. Herein, Protease 6SD was covalently immobilized on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), and the as-prepared immobilizate P-6SD@NH-MWCNT was applied in the enantioselective resolution of (R,S)-1 to yield (S)-1. In order to overcome the poor solubility of (R,S)-1 in aqueous solution, a novel triphasic reaction system constituting P-6SD@NH-MWCNT, aqueous phase and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) as the organic phase was constructed, which simultaneously improved the substrate solubility and the immobilizate recyclability.

Cognitive decline is one of the complications of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Intermittent fasting (IF) is a promising dietary intervention for alleviating T2D symptoms, but its protective effect on diabetes-driven cognitive dysfunction remains elusive. Here, we find that a 28-day IF regimen for diabetic mice improves behavioral impairment via a microbiota-metabolites-brain axis: IF enhances mitochondrial biogenesis and energy metabolism gene expression in hippocampus, re-structures the gut microbiota, and improves microbial metabolites that are related to cognitive function.
