Learning the global crystal symmetry and interpreting the equivariant information is crucial for accurately predicting material properties, yet remains to be fully accomplished by existing algorithms based on convolution networks. To overcome this challenge, here we develop a machine learning (ML) model, named symmetry-enhanced equivariance network (SEN), to build material representation with joint structure-chemical patterns, to encode important clusters embedded in the crystal structure, and to learn pattern equivariance in different scales via capsule transformers. Quantitative analyses of the intermediate matrices demonstrate that the intrinsic crystal symmetries and interactions between clusters have been exactly perceived by the SEN model and critically affect the prediction performances by reducing effective feature space.

Cytotoxicity of nanoparticles, typically evaluated by biochemical-based assays, often overlook the cellular biophysical properties such as cell morphology and cytoskeletal actin, which could serve as more sensitive indicators for cytotoxicity. Here, we demonstrate that low-dose albumin-coated gold nanorods (HSA@AuNRs), although being considered noncytotoxic in multiple biochemical assays, can induce intercellular gaps and enhance the paracellular permeability between human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs). The formation of intercellular gaps can be attributed to the changed cell morphology and cytoskeletal actin structures, as validated at the monolayer and single cell levels using fluorescence staining, atomic force microscopy, and super-resolution imaging.

Recent studies revealed the relationship among homologous recombination repair (HRR), androgen receptor (AR), and poly(adenosine diphosphate-ribose) polymerase (PARP); however, the synergy between anti-androgen enzalutamide (ENZ) and PARP inhibitor olaparib (OLA) remains unclear. Here, we showed that the synergistic effect of ENZ and OLA significantly reduced proliferation and induced apoptosis in AR-positive prostate cancer cell lines. Next-generation sequencing followed by Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analyses revealed the significant effects of ENZ plus OLA on nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ) and apoptosis pathways.

Adenosine 2a receptor (A2aR), a typical GPCR with a high affinity for adenosine, is widely expressed on immune cells, inhibiting anti-tumor immune response accordingly. Here, we identify that A2aR is specifically expressed on tumor cells from lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) patients, closely related to their prognosis and positively correlated with tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) infiltration. We hypothesize that blocking A2aR on LUAD cells will inhibit the role of TAMs and control tumor growth.
