Article Abstract

Herein, we report the development of a general ring expansion strategy that involves the formal self-dimerization of benzocyclobutenones (BCBs) through nickel catalysis. These formal self-dimerizations of BCBs are efficient and scalable and provide a facile and unique construction of diverse seven-membered ring ketones and 1-isochromen-1-ones with high structural diversity. Moreover, the solvent effects and CO atmosphere play a crucial role in promoting CO exclusion, which may address regioselectivity control toward the (4 + 4 - 1) product, while NaOAc as an additive under a N atmosphere promoted (4 + 2) product formation.

Asymmetric Total Synthesis of (+)-Spiroapplanatumine G.

Org Lett

September 2025

School of Chemical Sciences, University of Auckland, 23 Symonds Street, Auckland 1010, New Zealand.

Spiroapplanatumine G () is a spiro-meroterpenoid characterized by an unusual 6/5/7 tricyclic spirobenzofuran-3-one core. The first enantioselective total synthesis of spiroapplanatumine G () is reported, featuring a key enantioselective Diels-Alder reaction between an aurone ester and a silyloxydiene to assemble the spirobenzofuranone core. This strategic Diels-Alder transformation advantageously establishes the two contiguous stereogenic centers in a single step.

TaGW2-TaVOZ1 module regulates wheat salt tolerance via both E3 ligase-dependent and -independent pathways.

Sci Adv

State Key Laboratory for Crop Stress Resistance and High-Efficiency Production, College of Agronomy, Northwest A&F University, Yangling, Shaanxi 712100, China.

Wheat production is limited by the rapid expansion of salinized arable land worldwide. Identification of the molecular mechanisms that underlie the salt stress response is of great importance. Here, we uncovered the NAC-type transcription factor, TaVOZ1, as a positive regulator of wheat salt tolerance.

Mapping the mismatch between building and population growth: A global study of 1,700 cities.

The proportionality between urban building expansion and population growth is a key indicator of sustainable development, yet its global patterns and drivers remain underexplored. This study investigates the discrepancies between building volume and population growth rates (Δ) across 1,744 cities in 12 major global economies from 2000 to 2020 using satellite-based building volume and population databases. Results reveal significant regional disparities: cities in East and Southeast Asia tend to construct buildings at rates exceeding population growth, while many cities in Europe and North America show conservative building developments with Δ close to or lower than zero.

α-Diazo compounds have long been recognized as versatile reagents in organic synthesis, traditionally employed in metallocarbene chemistry. Recent advances have expanded their scope beyond conventional carbene-based transformations, leading to diverse applications in heterocycle synthesis and functionalization strategies. This review highlights the evolution of α-diazo compounds as key reagents in modern synthetic methodologies, focusing on their unique reactivity patterns, including cycloadditions, homologations, ring expansions, and carbene-free functionalizations.

This investigation explores the impact of an external electric field (EEF) in the normal-direction on cyclo[18]carbon, scrutinizing changes in molecular conformation, electronic structure, reactivity, and spectroscopic properties. Utilizing Gaussian16 and Multiwfn, we modeled the molecule under EEF conditions. The EEF induced an expansion of the cyclo[18]carbon ring and increased bond lengths.
