: The treatment of a pharyngocutaneous fistula (PCF) is typically a lengthy and arduous process, often causing significant pain for patients. This study aims to introduce a new method of treating PCF, negative pressure tube drainage (NPTD). : A retrospective study was conducted on 43 patients who developed PCF after laryngectomy. Of these, 20 patients received NPTD, while the remaining 23 were treated with open wound dressing change (OWC). Clinical indicators were compared between the two groups. : The NPTD group showed significant reductions in hospital stay, duration of low albumin/hemoglobulin, and postoperative medical costs compared to the OWC group. Between the two groups, there was no significant difference in the time from fistula formation to wound closure. The mean healing time was 20.57 days in the OWC group and 22.15 days in the NPTD group, respectively, which did not delay adjuvant therapies. : NPTD therapy is a minimally invasive and effective treatment option for pharyngocutaneous fistulas.

Keratins represent an important class of sulfur-rich structural proteins. In this study, the pressure response of α-keratin, extracted from sheep wool, was investigated using Raman spectroscopy up to 4 GPa. A non-polar liquid (a Fluorinert™ FC70/77 mixture) served as the Pressure Transmitting Medium (PTM) in a Diamond Anvil Cell (DAC).

Due to the poor regeneration ability of cartilage tissue, the design and fabrication of permanent hydrogel cartilage scaffolds with mechanical properties matching is still an urgent challenge. In this study, we propose an "inner swelling-outer restraint" strategy to construct Janus hydrogel for pressure-bearing cartilage replacement, which is inspired by the "Lamina-splendens" structure of cartilage. As a proof of concept, the poly(vinyl alcohol)/carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (PVA/CMCNa) layer is designed to capture more fluid by introducing negatively charged aggregates, while the macromolecular conformation of the PVA/MoS layer can be densified through wet annealing, thereby increasing the liquid permeation resistance of the PVA/CMCNa layer.

COVID-19 restrictions had a significant impact on family life, including daily activities and routines. This study aimed to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children's sleep and feeding behaviours, through undertaking reflexive thematic analysis of parents' open-text box responses to survey questions related to their child's sleep and feeding practices during COVID-19 restrictions. Six hundred and ninety one parents of children aged 0-24 months old who were living in the United Kingdom completed an online questionnaire between 14th December 2020 and 15th January 2021.

To elucidate possible mechanisms of nitrogen chemistry between ammonia (NH) and ethanol, the potential pathways of ethanol radicals (Wa, Wb, and Wc) following H-abstraction by NH radicals were primarily investigated including HCN addition, H-transfer, and dissociation reactions by quantum chemical calculations. The rate constants were solved in the master equation based on RRKM and TST theory and fitted to the Arrhenius equation. The results demonstrate that H-abstraction from CHOH by NH at the b-site is the most competitive, facilitating subsequent HCN addition.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between pulse pressure (PP) and age-related structural brain changes including brain volumes, white matter hyperintensities (WMH), fractional anisotropy, silent brain lesions, microbleeds, cerebral blood flow and metabolism, and beta-amyloid accumulation.
Methods: Systematic review of PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus, and Ovid Embase (from inception to January 2023) and references of included studies among adult populations was conducted. Findings were summarized narratively and by performing a fixed-effects meta-analysis.
