Although evidence indicates that the abnormal accumulation of α-synuclein (α-syn) in dopamine neurons of the substantia nigra is the main pathological feature of Parkinson's disease (PD), no compounds that have both α-syn antiaggregation and α-syn degradation functions have been successful in treating the disease in the clinic. Here, it is shown that black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNSs) interact directly with α-syn fibrils to trigger their disaggregation for PD treatment. Moreover, BPNSs have a specific affinity for α-syn through van der Waals forces. And BPNSs are found to activate autophagy to maintain α-syn homeostasis, improve mitochondrial dysfunction, reduce reactive oxygen species levels, and rescue neuronal death and synaptic loss in PC12 cells. It is also observed that BPNSs penetrate the blood-brain barrier and protect against dopamine neuron loss, alleviating behavioral disorders in 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) induced mouse model and hA53T α-syn transgenic mice. Together, the study reveals that BPNSs have the potential as a novel integrated nanomedicine for clinical diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases.

Coastal sediments in semi-enclosed bays are particularly susceptible to contamination due to limited water circulation and ongoing contaminant input. In Masan Bay, a heavily impacted coastal area in Korea, sediment remediation is essential to alleviate the effects of organic enrichment and hypoxia. This study investigated the effectiveness of oyster shell capping as an in-situ remediation technique by assessing its impact on sediment environment, microbial communities, and macrobenthic fauna.

Phosphorus(V)-centered porphyrins (P(V)-porphyrins) are an important class of functional dyes in many fields of research, and axial ligands on the phosphorus atom affect the electronic properties of P(V)-porphyrins and add functions. Herein, we report on the synthesis and characterization of a hitherto unknown P(V)-porphyrin having hydrogen atoms as axial ligands (1·PF , PF is a counter anion). Synthesis of 1·PF was achieved by treatment of dichloro-derivative (2·Cl) with LiAlH followed by AgPF via hydride reduction accompanied by one-electron reduction and one-electron oxidation.

Arsenic (As) contamination from abandoned gold mines threatens adjacent ecosystems through leaching and erosion. This study investigated how soil physicochemical properties regulate As binding forms upon initial contamination and associated ecotoxicological effects on soil invertebrates. Forest soils (0-10 cm depth) were collected from four mountainous sites across Korea with varying physicochemical properties.

The differentiation of the nitrate reduction pathway is of great significance in the ecosystem, as it determines the occurrence form of ecosystem N. In order to explore the impact and mechanism of different algal dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) on differentiation of nitrate (NO-N) reduction pathway, small-scale enclosure experiment was conducted to analyze the DON and DOP composition, nutrient level, microbial community composition and NO-N reduction pathway in ponds with Microcystis and Dolichospermum blooms. The main DON produced by Microcystis included lipids and proteins as well as carbohydrate which were readily degradable, whereas the DOP produced by Dolichospermum predominantly consists of readily degradable forms such as carbohydrate and protein.

Agriculture intensification represents an essential strategy to ensure food security for the growing human population, but it also poses considerable environmental concerns. Climate change and associated projections of an increased frequency of extreme precipitation and runoff events may amplify nutrient dynamics along the watershed-lake continuum, and could further exacerbate the poor water quality conditions downstream. Identifying hotspot locations with higher propensity for sediment and nutrient export and designing effective mitigation measures at the source is more critical than ever.
