Background And Aim: (Z)2-(5-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-2, 4-dioxothiazolidin-3-yl) acetic acid (MDA) is an aldose reductase (AR) inhibitor. Recent studies suggest that AR contributes to the pathogenesis of inflammation by affecting the nuclear factor κB (NF-κB)-dependent expression of cytokines and chemokines and therefore could be a novel therapeutic target for inflammatory pathology. The current study evaluated the in vivo role of MDA in protecting the liver against injury and fibrogenesis caused by CCl(4) in rats, and the underlying mechanisms.

Article Synopsis
  • Inflammatory cells and cytokines are critical in pulmonary fibrosis, and this study aimed to assess the preventative effects of liposomal quercetin against fibrosis induced by bleomycin.
  • Mice received bleomycin injections followed by liposomal quercetin treatment, leading to significant reductions in immune cell counts, inflammatory cytokines (like TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, and IL-6), and hydroxyproline content, indicating less fibrosis.
  • Histopathological analysis confirmed that liposomal quercetin treatment reduced lung fibrosis and collagen deposition while lowering TGF-beta1 expression, suggesting it effectively alleviates bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis through cytokine suppression.
