Article Synopsis
  • The honey bee is crucial for agriculture, pollinating a third of our food, but is threatened by the Sacbrood virus (SBV), especially the Chinese strain (CSBV) causing mass bee deaths in China.
  • Researchers used high-throughput next-generation sequencing to explore how honey bee larvae respond to CSBV, finding 2,534 differentially expressed genes related to immunity, particularly in pathways like Toll, IMD, and RNA interference.
  • The study revealed significant changes in the expression of genes related to antimicrobial peptides and Sirtuin proteins, marking the first evidence of Sirtuin's role in insect immune responses to viral infections, which could aid in developing treatments for honey bee diseases.

Making full use of semantic and structure information in a sentence is critical to support entity relation extraction. Neural networks use stacked neural layers to perform designated feature transformations and can automatically extract high-order abstract feature representations from raw inputs. However, because a sentence usually contains several pairs of named entities, the networks are weak when encoding semantic and structure information of a relation instance.

The ectoparasitic mite, , feeds directly on honey bees and serves as a vector for transmitting viruses among them. The mite causes relatively little damage to its natural host, the Eastern honey bee () but it is the most devastating pest for the Western honey bee (). Using Illumina HiSeq sequencing technology, we conducted a metatranscriptome analysis of the microbial community associated with mites.

Transmission routes impact pathogen virulence and genetics, therefore comprehensive knowledge of these routes and their contribution to pathogen circulation is essential for understanding host-pathogen interactions and designing control strategies. Deformed wing virus (DWV), a principal viral pathogen of honey bees associated with increased honey bee mortality and colony losses, became highly virulent with the spread of its vector, the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor. Reproduction of Varroa mites occurs in capped brood cells and mite-infested pupae from these cells usually have high levels of DWV.

Terahertz (THz) radiation from an inhomogeneous plasma filament generated by focusing two-color femtosecond laser pulses into argon gas filled in a chamber is investigated experimentally by tailoring the Gaussian pump laser beams with an iris, where broadband THz emission over 10 THz is produced. It is found that the collected far-field THz radiation includes not only coherent but also partial-coherent components of the THz waves, which are emitted from the different parts of the inhomogeneous plasma filament with different plasma densities, contributing correspondingly to the different frequencies of the THz spectrum. Our results suggest that the THz spectrum can be manipulated by controlling the plasma density distribution of the filaments.
