Purpose: Many individuals with inborn errors of immunity (IEIs) have poor humoral immune (HI) vaccine responses. Only a few studies have examined specific cell-mediated immune (CMI) responses to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines in this population. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine HI and CMI responses up to 6 months post-COVID-19 vaccine dose 3 in adults with IEIs.

Background: The significant rate of recurrent instability following arthroscopic stabilization surgery points to a need for an evidence-based treatment approach. The instability severity index Score (ISI score) is a point-based algorithm that may be used to assist clinicians in selecting the optimal treatment approach, but its efficacy compared with a traditional treatment algorithm has not been previously validated. The aim was to compare two surgical treatment algorithms: the ISI score and a conventional treatment algorithm (CTA).

Intraluminal epithelial abnormalities, potential precursors to significant conditions like cancer, necessitate early detection for improved prognosis. We present a motor-free telerobotic optical coherence tomography (OCT) endoscope that offers high-resolution intraluminal imaging and overcomes the limitations of traditional systems in navigating curved lumens. This system incorporates a compact magnetic rotor with a rotatable diametrically magnetized cylinder permanent magnet (RDPM) and a reflector, effectively mitigating thermal and electrical risks by utilizing an external magnetic field to maintain temperature increases below 0.

The complex anatomy of internal luminal organs, like bronchioles, poses challenges for endoscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT). These challenges include limited steerability for targeted imaging and nonuniform rotation distortion (NURD) with proximal scanning. Using rotary micromotors for distal scanning could address NURD but raises concerns about electrical safety and costs.

Article Synopsis
  • Sleep deprivation can cause problems in the brain like poor thinking and mood issues by messing with tiny energy factories called mitochondria and causing inflammation.
  • In tests with rats that hadn't slept, researchers found that their brains got stressed and damaged, leading to increased inflammation and more harmful substances called cytokines.
  • A new treatment using a special nutrient called hydroxytyrosol butyrate (HTHB) helped improve behavior in sleep-deprived rats and reduced the brain damage, suggesting it might help with mental health problems caused by lack of sleep.

Although multiple myeloma (MM) responds well to immunotherapeutic treatment, certain portions of MM are still unresponsive or relapse after immunotherapy. Other immune molecules are needed for the immunotherapy of MM. Here, we revealed that leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor B4 (LILRB4) was highly expressed in multiple myeloma cell lines and patient samples and that the expression of LILRB4 was adversely correlated with the overall survival of MM patients.

We studied the use of palliative radiotherapy (RT) among patients with primary, non-curable, locally advanced pancreatic cancer. In this subset of patients, with very poor survival, various palliative RT dose fractionation schemes are used; but, in the absence of a guideline, practice patterns vary, and dose choice is mainly based on the physician's intuition. We divided the patients into three groups, according to the dose fractionation schedules received: low (A), intermediate (B), and high (C) dose groups, to study the potential differences in outcome between the different dose prescriptions.

  • Canadian women with epilepsy face special challenges when it comes to reproductive health because of their seizures and medications.
  • A study showed that many healthcare professionals in Canada discuss birth control options and often recommend IUDs, but not all share important birth plans with other doctors.
  • Most doctors believe breastfeeding is safe for women on seizure medications and provide helpful advice after giving birth, but there are still some areas where care could be improved.

Background: Acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) is a clinical syndrome with various causes. It is not uncommon that COPD patients presenting with dyspnea have multiple causes for their symptoms including AECOPD, pneumonia, or congestive heart failure occurring concurrently.

Methods: To identify clinical, radiographic, and laboratory characteristics that might help distinguish AECOPD from another dominant disease in patients with a history of COPD, we conducted a retrospective cohort study of hospitalized patients with admitting diagnosis of AECOPD who were screened for a prospective randomized controlled trial from Sep 2016 to Mar 2018.

The standard of care for early-stage cervix cancer is radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy. Adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) or chemoradiotherapy may be administered to reduce the risk of recurrence in patients considered to be at elevated risk based on a combination of pathologic factors. We performed a retrospective review to determine oncologic outcomes in patients treated for early-stage cervix cancer and to determine if surgical approach impacted oncologic outcomes or the decision to use adjuvant therapy.
