Trauma of the globe: State of art in global and in China.

Current states of traumatic eye injury are reviewed in terms of epidemiology in the developing countries and developed countries, causes of the trauma, eye injury types, traumatic eye injury diagnostic methods and treatments. Trauma-caused vision-threatening conditions such as open global injury, traumatic optic neuropathy and proliferative vitreoretinopathy are particularly discussed. Also the most updated clinic research in China as Eye Injury Vitrectomy Study is discussed.

Anti-diabetic activities of cis- and trans-2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilbene 2-O-β-glucopyranoside from Polygonum multiflorum.

Scope: Functional foods can be used alone or in combination with existing therapies in preventing and treating type 2 diabetes (T2D). Trans-2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilbene 2-O-β-glucopyranoside (trans-THSG), a dominant bioactive compound from Polygonum multiflorum (PM)-a popular medicinal food in Asia, has attracted increasing research interests due to its strong antioxidant activity. The content of naturally occurring cis-THSG (cis-2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilbene 2-O-β-glucopyranoside) was very low in PM root, but was prepared in this study by mimicking the traditional process of PM.

Potent Antiarthritic Properties of Phloretin in Murine Collagen-Induced Arthritis.

In the exploration of potential therapeutic agents for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), DBA/1J mice are used as the RA model of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). Phloretin, a flavonoid compound extracted from , has been found to exhibit anti-inflammatory activity, making it a potential candidate for treatment of RA. The objective of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effects of phloretin on CIA mice.

Studies using concentric ring bifocal and peripheral add multifocal contact lenses to slow myopia progression in school-aged children: a meta-analysis.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of soft contact lens with concentric ring bifocal and peripheral add multifocal designs on controlling myopia progression in school-aged children.

Methods: We systematically searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and reference lists of included trials. Methodological quality of included trials was assessed using Jadad Scale and Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale items.

Effect of uncorrection versus full correction on myopia progression in 12-year-old children.

Purpose: To investigate the effects of no correction versus full correction on myopia progression in Chinese children over a period of 2 years.

Methods: Myopia was defined as cycloplegic spherical equivalent (SE) of ≤ -0.50 D.

Molecular mechanisms of the anti-obesity effect of bioactive compounds in tea and coffee.

Obesity is a serious health problem in adults and children worldwide. However, the basic strategies for the management of obesity (diet, exercise, drugs and surgery) have limitations and side effects. Therefore, many researchers have sought to identify bioactive components in food.

Design and Syntheses of Novel Fluoroporphyrin-Anthraquinone Complexes as Antitumor Agents.

A novel fluoroporphyrin-anthraquinone hybrid with dipeptide link and its metal complexes were synthesized and evaluated for anti-proliferation activity in human cancer cell line HeLa. The preliminary results demonstrated that all the compounds showed moderate to excellent antitumor activities. Among the active compounds, compound 3 which contains fluorinated porphyrin-anthraquinone and zinc ion exhibited the highest potency with IC50 value of 8.

Emission color tuning and white-light generation based on photochromic control of energy transfer reactions in polymer micelles.

We encapsulate a fluorescent donor molecule and a photochromic acceptor unit (photoswitch) in polymer micelles and show that the color of the emitted fluorescence is continuously changed from blue to yellow upon light-induced isomerization of the acceptor. Interestingly, white-light generation is achieved in between. With the photoswitch in the colorless form, intense blue emission from the donor is observed, while UV-induced isomerization to the colored form induces an energy transfer reaction that quenches the donor emission and sensitizes the yellow emission from the colored photoswitch.

Correlation of CpG Island Methylation of the Cytochrome P450 2E1/2D6 Genes with Liver Injury Induced by Anti-Tuberculosis Drugs: A Nested Case-Control Study.

This study investigated the role of CpG island methylation of the CYP2E1 and CYP2D6 genes in liver injury induced by anti-TB drugs from an epigenetic perspective in a Chinese cohort. A 1:1 matched nested case-control study design was applied. Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) patients, who underwent standard anti-TB therapy and developed liver injury were defined as cases, while those who did not develop liver injury were defined as control.

The characteristics and functions of a miniature inverted-repeat transposable element TaMITE81 in the 5' UTR of TaCHS7BL from Triticum aestivum.

Miniature inverted-repeat transposable elements (MITEs) are truncated derivatives of autonomous DNA transposons, and are dispersed abundantly in eukaryotic and prokaryotic genomes. In this article, a MITE, TaMITE81, was isolated from the 5' untranslated region (UTR) of TaCHS7BL, chalcone synthase (CHS) catalyzing the first committed step of anthocyanin biosynthesis, in the wheat cultivar 'Opata' with white grain. TaMITE81 was only 81 nucleotides, including a terminal inverted repeat with 39 nucleotides and was flanked by two nucleotides, "TA", target site duplications that were typical features of stowaway-like MITEs.

Comparison of Visual Outcomes After Femtosecond LASIK, Wave Front-Guided Femtosecond LASIK, and Femtosecond Lenticule Extraction.

Purpose: To compare the mesopic contrast sensitivity (CS) and higher order aberrations (HOAs) at 3 months after femtosecond-laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) (FS-LASIK), wave front-guided femtosecond LASIK (WF-LASIK), and femtosecond lenticule extraction (FLEx) for the correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism.

Methods: In this prospective nonrandomized study, 332 right eyes of 332 patients were treated with FS-LASIK, WF-LASIK, or FLEx. The HOAs and mesopic CS were evaluated preoperatively and at 3 months postoperatively.

Molecular phylogeny and dynamic evolution of disease resistance genes in the legume family.

Background: Legumes are the second-most important crop family in agriculture for its economic and nutritional values. Disease resistance (R-) genes play an important role in responding to pathogen infections in plants. To further increase the yield of legume crops, we need a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of R-genes in the legume family.

[Research advances of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and its association with myopia].

Recently, the distribution characteristics of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in myopic population have raised scholars' attention. The retinal nerve fiber layer thickness is varied with different refractive statuses, and is correlated to many factors like age, eye elongation, and fundus changes. Further exploration of the relationship between myopia and retinal structure and function will promote our understanding and knowledge of the pathogenesis of myopia.

Transcriptome Analysis of Purple Pericarps in Common Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.).

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars possessing purple grain arethought to be more nutritious because of high anthocyanin contents in the pericarp. Comparative transcriptome analysis of purple (cv Gy115) and white pericarps was carried out using next-generation sequencing technology.

Peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer thickness and its association with refractive error in Chinese children: the Anyang Childhood Eye Study.

Background: To report the thickness of the peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (pRNFL) in Chinese children and examine its association with refractive error, axial length (AL) and optic disc parameters.

Design: Population-based cross-sectional study.

Participants: A total of 2893 seven-year-old children from 11 randomly selected primary schools in Anyang, central China.

Dynamic and Progressive Control of DNA Origami Conformation by Modulating DNA Helicity with Chemical Adducts.

DNA origami has received enormous attention for its ability to program complex nanostructures with a few nanometer precision. Dynamic origami structures that change conformation in response to environmental cues or external signals hold great promises in sensing and actuation at the nanoscale. The reconfiguration mechanism of existing dynamic origami structures is mostly limited to single-stranded hinges and relies almost exclusively on DNA hybridization or strand displacement.

The relevance of body positioning and its training effect on badminton smash.

One of the dominant skills in badminton is the forehand overhead smash, which consists of 1/5 attacks during games. Empirical evidences show that one has to adjust the body position in relation to the coming shuttlecock to produce a powerful and accurate smash. Therefore, positioning is a fundamental aspect influencing smash quality.

5-Demethylnobiletin and 5-Acetoxy-6,7,8,3',4'-pentamethoxyflavone Suppress Lipid Accumulation by Activating the LKB1-AMPK Pathway in 3T3-L1 Preadipocytes and High Fat Diet-Fed C57BL/6 Mice.

Polymethoxyflavones (PMFs) and hydroxylated polymethoxyflavones (HPMFs), such as nobiletin (Nob) and 5-demethylnobiletin (5-OH-Nob), are unique flavonoids that are found exclusively in citrus peels. Nobiletin has been shown to suppress adipogenesis in vitro, but the antiadipogenic activity of 5-OH-Nob has not been investigated. Both nobiletin and 5-OH-Nob have poor aqueous solubility and low oral bioavailability.

Characterization of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates from Hebei, China: genotypes and drug susceptibility phenotypes.

Background: Tuberculosis remains a major public health problem in China. The Hebei province is located in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei integration region; however little information about the genetic diversity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis was available in this area. This study describes the first attempt to map the molecular epidemiology of MTB strains isolated from Hebei.

Laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK) versus photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for correction of myopia.

Background: Myopia (near-sightedness or short-sightedness) is a condition in which the refractive power of the eye is greater than required. The most frequent complaint of people with myopia is blurred distance vision, which can be eliminated by conventional optical aids such as spectacles or contact lenses, or by refractive surgery procedures such as photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser epithelial keratomileusis (LASEK). PRK uses laser to remove the corneal stroma.

Corneal Power, Anterior Segment Length and Lens Power in 14-year-old Chinese Children: the Anyang Childhood Eye Study.

To analyze the components of young Chinese eyes with special attention to differences in corneal power, anterior segment length and lens power. Cycloplegic refractions and ocular biometry with LENSTAR were used to calculate lens power with Bennett's method. Mean refraction and mean values for the ocular components of five different refractive groups were studied with ANOVA and post-hoc Scheffé tests.

Tangeretin derivative, 5-acetyloxy-6,7,8,4'-tetramethoxyflavone induces G2/M arrest, apoptosis and autophagy in human non-small cell lung cancer cells in vitro and in vivo.

Tangeretin, a major phytochemicals in tangerine peels--an important Chinese herb, has been found to have anti-carcinogenic properties. To improve bioavailability and increase potency of tangeretin, its derivative, 5-acetyloxy-6,7,8,4'-tetramethoxyflavone (5-AcTMF), has been synthesized and shown potent inhibition of proliferation activity against human breast and leukemia cancer cell lines. In this study, we have further investigated the anticancer effects of 5-AcTMF on CL1-5 non-small cell lung cancer cells (NSCLC) both in vitro and in vivo and demonstrated that 5-AcTMF effectively inhibited cancer cell proliferation, induced G2/M-phase arrest associated with cdc2 and CDC25c and increased in the apoptotic cells associated with caspase activation, down regulation of Bcl-2, XIAP and Survivn, inducing release of cytochrome c into the cytosol and disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential.
