FAT1 is a tumor suppressor gene encoding the protocadherin FAT1, which has been found to be mutated in different types of human cancers with the highest frequency in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). However, through which mechanisms mutations of FAT1 lead to tumor progression is incompletely understood. Here, we report that loss of FAT1 in various tumor cells, including HNSCC cells, resulted in increased protein levels of the transcriptional regulators YAP and TAZ.

Difucosyllactose (DFL), an important kind of fucosylated human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), has garnered considerable attention due to its excellent physiological activities in infants. Previously, we achieved biosynthesis of DFL; however, substantial residual intermediates of fucosyllactoses (FL) were detected. In this study, DFL biosynthesis was optimized, and residual FL were reduced by regulating metabolic pathways.

Since the seminal report by Adachi and co-workers in 2012, there has been a veritable explosion of interest in the design of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) compounds, particularly as emitters for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). With rapid advancements and innovation in materials design, the efficiencies of TADF OLEDs for each of the primary color points as well as for white devices now rival those of state-of-the-art phosphorescent emitters. Beyond electroluminescent devices, TADF compounds have also found increasing utility and applications in numerous related fields, from photocatalysis, to sensing, to imaging and beyond.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the relationship between certain types of particulate matter (PM) and hospitalizations or emergency visits for asthma and COPD in New York before and after implementing stricter automobile emission controls.
  • Using statistical methods, it identified that increases in specific PM sources like spark-ignition emissions and secondary sulfates were linked to higher rates of asthma emergency visits, while diesel emissions had a negative association.
  • After the new emission regulations were put in place, there was a decrease in COPD hospital admissions related to some PM sources, but asthma visits generally increased, highlighting the need for further investigation into these trends.

  • Immunotherapy can be effective for cancer, but many osteosarcoma patients don't benefit from it due to the unique characteristics of their tumor environment, like hypoxia and lactate metabolism, which may predict treatment outcomes.
  • Researchers identified a set of 8 genes linked to these environmental factors and created a nomogram to assess patient risk; those with high-risk scores showed worse prognoses and a lack of immune cell activity in tumors.
  • Analysis indicated that high-risk patients had lower levels of essential immune cells (e.g., Cytotoxic T cells) and immune markers, suggesting they are less likely to respond well to immunotherapy.

A pivotal approach in engineering artificial peripheral nerve sheaths encompasses the augmentation of the regenerative microenvironment via the manipulation of Schwann cells (SCs). Our investigation employed single-cell sequencing analysis to elucidate the potential functions of Schwann cells and the Wnt pathway in facilitating peripheral nerve regeneration. studies showed that activating the Wnt signaling pathway promotes the transition to repair SCs, boosting their growth, movement, and immune functions.

  • Cellulose nanofiber (CNF) is commonly used in MXene film electrodes to enhance mechanical properties for supercapacitors, but it negatively affects capacitance due to its non-electrochemical activity.
  • The study introduces lignin-containing cellulose fibers (LCNF) as a replacement for CNF, significantly improving the mechanical strength of MXene film electrodes while also enhancing capacitance through the lignin's reversible chemical properties.
  • The resulting supercapacitor exhibits an impressive energy density of 1.8 Wh/g and maintains excellent rate capability, effectively balancing mechanical strength and electrochemical performance.

Prior studies reported excess rates (ERs) of cardiorespiratory events associated with short-term increases in PM concentrations, despite implementation of pollution-control policies. In 2017, Federal Tier 3 light-duty vehicle regulations began, and to-date there have been no assessments of population health effects of the policy. Using the NYS Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) database, we obtained hospitalizations and ED visits with a principal diagnosis of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for residents living within 15 miles of six urban PM monitoring sites in NYS (2014-2019).
