Elective tracheostomy is commonly performed to secure the airway following major oncologic and reconstructive head and neck procedures, though it carries risks of additional morbidity and may not be necessary in all cases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between elective tracheostomy and postoperative airway complications. This was a retrospective cohort study of all patients undergoing resection and free flap reconstruction of an oral cavity cancer from 2012 to 2022 in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program databases.

Introduction: This observational study seeks to investigate student self-assessment skills in the United States, Egypt and Japan and to elucidate gender's impact on the self-assessment abilities of students from various cultural backgrounds.

Methods: Dental students from the United States (n = 350), Egypt (n = 335) and Japan (n = 301) completed various preclinical exercises. In the United States, students took preclinical practical exams in Class II amalgam preparation and restoration and Class III resin-composite preparation and restoration.

Phytoseiid mites are significant natural predators of harmful mites and constitute one of the largest groups within Gamasina (Acari: Mesostigmata). The currently accepted classification divides the Phytoseiidae family into three subfamilies, primarily based on the pattern of their dorsal setae. However, the phylogenetic relationships among these subfamilies remain unresolved.

Background: The trauma literature suggests that treatment at a level 1 trauma center is associated with improved outcomes for a diversity of injuries. However, differences in outcomes with respect to trauma center designation are poorly studied in the facial trauma demographic.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure the association between trauma center designation and clinical outcomes in patients undergoing management of isolated mandible fractures.

Background: Diabetic cystopathy (DCP) is linked to bladder nerve conduction disorders, with diabetes-induced neuropathy impairing nerve signal transmission and causing bladder dysfunction. Myosin 5a, vital for neuronal transport, has been linked to neurological disorders, though its role in DCP remains unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate whether Myosin 5a plays a potential regulatory role in Diabetic Cystopathy.

Neuromuscular conduction dysfunction-induced underactive bladder (UAB) is a major urological complication associated with diabetes mellitus (DM), and there remain deficiencies in reliable pharmacological treatment options. Astragalus polysaccharides (APS), as an edible active substance in , have a therapeutic effect on diabetes and its complications. We investigated the effects and mechanism of APS in high-fat-diet-induced (HFD) diabetic UAB mice.

Background: Overactive bladder (OAB) is a common disorder in perimenopausal women, involving detrusor regulation by bladder neuro-immune interactions. While Suoquan Wan (SQW) has shown efficacy in alleviating OAB symptoms, its underlying mechanisms remain unclear.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effects of SQW on perimenopausal overactive bladder (OAB) and elucidate its underlying mechanisms in restoring bladder neuro-immune homeostasis.

In this Letter, we propose a full-duplex dynamic time division multiple access (FDD-TDMA) scheme for multi-user underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC). It supports full-duplex communication through wavelength division duplex (WDD) and enhances the system throughput using dynamic time resource allocation. Additionally, a clock synchronization and compensation method is proposed for precise clock synchronization without time-keeping.

Background: Patients who present to the emergency department (ED) with severe odontogenic infections are often hospitalized for surgical drainage and medical management. However, inpatient management of these patients can be financially burdensome. While medical indications for hospital admission are well established, it remains unclear if patient insurance status is associated with admission.

Background/purpose: Self-assessment in dental education is considered a fundamental skill for proficient oral healthcare providers. While previous studies looked at self-assessment in education, few have done so at Japanese institutions. This study aimed to assess potential associations between gender and self-assessment skills in Japanese dental students.

Aim: To investigate whether cardiovascular health (CVH) is associated with periodontitis.

Materials And Methods: We used data from the 2009 to 2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We quantified CVH using Life's Essential 8, which includes four health behaviours (diet, smoking, physical activity and sleep) and four health factors (body mass index, blood cholesterol, glucose and pressure).

Pregnant women are at a higher risk of caries compared to nonpregnant women, and higher parity is a risk factor for untreated caries and tooth loss. However, it is unknown whether the timing of birth is associated with dental caries experience over time. This study is a cross-sectional study using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2011-2018.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral mucositis (OM) is a serious side effect for patients undergoing radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy for head and neck cancers, leading to increased interest from the pharmaceutical industry in finding an effective treatment.
  • A study examined the features of successful and failed Phase III trials by analyzing aspects such as sponsor funding, patient criteria, and consistency in efficacy outcomes across trial phases.
  • The research identified three successful trials (involving avasopasem manganese and palifermin) and three unsuccessful ones (dusquetide, iseganan hydrochloride, and clonidine), highlighting the importance of specific trial design elements for better outcomes in future studies.

Purpose/objective: A career in healthcare is built on the foundations of continuous self-reflection and self-assessment. Previous studies have solely compared student self-assessment to faculty grades in a single discipline. The objective of this study was to investigate whether associations of a student's self-assessment skills exist across multiple disciplines in the predoctoral setting.

Spatial perception and psychomotor skills are critical components to clinical dentistry. However, measures within the dental school curricula have not been sufficiently studied and evaluated for their effectiveness in predicting preclinical performance. The objective of this study was to examine whether students' waxing skills are associated with preclinical operative performance.
