Background: Postpartum pelvic girdle pain (PGP), experienced by approximately 10% of women, is typically refractory to conservative management. Customised dynamic elastomeric fabric orthoses (DEFOs) are one novel option to address this. We assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a randomised controlled trial comparing a DEFO plus standardised advice/exercises (intervention) versus standardised advice/exercise alone (control).

Partial phenotypic overlap has been suggested between multiple system atrophy and spinocerebellar ataxia 27B, the autosomal dominant ataxia caused by an intronic GAA•TTC repeat expansion in FGF14. In this study, we investigated the frequency of FGF14 GAA•TTC repeat expansion in clinically diagnosed and pathologically confirmed multiple system atrophy cases. We screened 657 multiple system atrophy cases (193 clinically diagnosed and 464 pathologically confirmed) and 1003 controls.

Hospitals are motivated to create more autism friendly environments to optimise access and experience for the community. However, there is a lack of clarity in what the term autism friendly in hospital settings means. We conducted a scoping review of four online databases and eleven national autism organisations to determine existing definitions for autism friendly within hospital settings.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of central vision loss in the elderly population. Bevacizumab, a full-length humanized monoclonal anti-VEGF antibody, is commonly used off-label drug to treat AMD. However, the dosing regimen of bevacizumab and other anti-VEGF antibodies requires monthly intravitreal injections followed by regular intravitreal injections at 4-16-week intervals.

Cancer cells are exposed to diverse metabolites in the tumor microenvironment that are used to support the synthesis of nucleotides, amino acids, and lipids needed for rapid cell proliferation. Recent work has shown that ketone bodies such as β-hydroxybutyrate (β-OHB), which are elevated in circulation under fasting conditions or low glycemic diets, can serve as an alternative fuel that is metabolized in the mitochondria to provide acetyl-CoA for the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle in some tumors. Here, we discover a non-canonical route for β-OHB metabolism, in which β-OHB can bypass the TCA cycle to generate cytosolic acetyl-CoA for fatty acid synthesis in cancer cells.

Article Synopsis
  • Ferroptosis is a type of cell death linked to lipid peroxidation and is being targeted in cancer treatment, emphasizing the importance of understanding its triggers.
  • Despite lipid deprivation reducing the overall levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in cancer cells, these cells become more vulnerable to ferroptosis.
  • The study reveals that when deprived of lipids, cancer cells activate a pathway that reallocates PUFAs from triglycerides to synthesize and accumulate specific PUFAs in phospholipids, thereby increasing their sensitivity to ferroptosis despite lower PUFA levels overall.

Background: Patients who present to the emergency department (ED) with severe odontogenic infections are often hospitalized for surgical drainage and medical management. However, inpatient management of these patients can be financially burdensome. While medical indications for hospital admission are well established, it remains unclear if patient insurance status is associated with admission.

Temperature-related mortality is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the United States. Herein, we explore the effect of air masses (AMs) - a relatively novel and holistic measure of environmental conditions - on human mortality across 61 cities in the United States. Geographic and seasonal differences in the effects of each AM on deseasonalized and detrended anomalous lagged mortality are examined using simple descriptive statistics, one-way analyses of variance, relative risks of excess mortality, and regression-based artificial neural network (ANN) models.

The reaction of Re(CO)Br with deprotonated 1H-(5-(2,2':6',2''-terpyridine)pyrid-2-yl)tetrazole yields a triangular assembly formed by tricarbonyl Re(I) vertices. Photophysical measurements reveal blue-green emission with a maximum at 520 nm, 32 % quantum yield, and 2430 ns long-lived excited state decay lifetime in deaerated dichloromethane solution. Coordination of lanthanoid ions to the terpyridine units red-shifts the emission to 570 nm and also reveals efficient (90 %) and fast sensitisation of both Eu(III) and Yb(III) at room temperature, with a similar rate constant k on the order of 10 s.

Article Synopsis
  • Evidence for shockwave therapy (SWT) in treating greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) is insufficient, prompting this study to evaluate its efficacy on pain and function.
  • A review of 12 studies involving 1,121 subjects found no significant differences in pain or functional outcomes between SWT and control groups, although SWT showed moderate effects on pain and low effects on function.
  • The research concludes that while SWT did not yield statistically significant improvements compared to controls, the treatment may still be a viable option due to the low occurrence of side effects and some observed clinical benefits.

Ferroptosis is a form of cell death caused by lipid peroxidation that is emerging as a target for cancer therapy, highlighting the need to identify factors that govern ferroptosis susceptibility. Lipid peroxidation occurs primarily on phospholipids containing polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Here, we show that even though extracellular lipid limitation reduces cellular PUFA levels, lipid-starved cancer cells are paradoxically more sensitive to ferroptosis.
