As a key bacterial actin-like protein, MreB plays crucial roles in maintaining cell shape, regulating peptidoglycan synthesis, and coordinating chromosome segregation, making it a promising target for novel antibiotics. This review comprehensively explores MreB’s molecular architecture, its assembly into antiparallel protofilaments, and its pivotal roles in bacterial cell morphology and division. We also delve into how MreB interacts with membrane-associated proteins such as RodZ and MreC/D to coordinate cell wall synthesis and respond to environmental signals like ion gradients and temperature changes.

Background And Aims: The Royal Free Hospital-Nutritional Prioritizing Tool (RFH-NPT) identifies nutritional risk in patients with liver disease, an important factor in cirrhosis outcomes. Recognizing the gap in existing prognostic models, which often overlook malnutrition, we developed and validated an RFH-NPT-based model for predicting outcomes of patients with cirrhosis.

Methods: This study included inpatients with cirrhosis from a single center between February and July 2016 (training cohort) and patients from six other medical centers admitted between December 2011 and May 2022 (validation cohort).

SUMOylation, the covalent attachment of small ubiquitin-like modifier proteins (SUMO) to lysine residues of target substrates, has emerged as a crucial post-translational modification regulating various cellular processes. Recent studies have revealed that SUMOylation also plays significant roles in host-pathogen interactions during bacterial infections. On the one hand, SUMOylation can modulate host innate immune responses, such as inflammatory signaling and autophagy, to defend against invading bacteria.

Background: Gastric carcinogenesis is associated with defects in DNA damage repair pathways, in which the gene family (, , and ) play an important role in DNA repair. It is also well known that the gene, as a tumor suppressor, influences the development of gastric cancer.

Methods: We recruited 484 gastric cancer patients and 471 controls.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) ( rs1996147; rs3813226, rs6747506; rs2292238; and rs707284, rs7560730) and the risk of schizophrenia (SZ) in a Chinese population. We conducted a case-control study, including 248 patients with SZ and 236 healthy controls matched for age and sex. The Mass-array platform was used to detect all the genotypes of the SNPs.

In recent years, abnormal m6A alteration in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been a focus on investigating the biological implications. In this study, our objective is to determine whether m6A modification contributes to the progression of HBV-related HCC. To achieve this, we employed a random forest model to screen top 8 characteristic m6A regulators from 19 candidate genes.

In this study, to clarify the interaction between dissolved heavy metals and the coexisting chemical factors in karst wetland waters, surface water samples were collected from the Caohai Wetland during a water year, and the hydrochemistry and heavy metal pollution characteristics of the samples were analyzed. The main influencing factors of heavy metals in different water periods were identified through a cooccurrence network analysis. To further analyze the influence mechanism of these main influencing factors, the forms of heavy metals in the water were simulated with PHREEQC software, and the effects of these main influencing factors on the forms were analyzed by redundancy analysis.

The migration of sediment phosphorus (P) could be affected by the existence of aquatic plants. To explore the effects of aquatic plants on the P sorption-desorption behaviors in the sediments, sediment in Caohai wetland was collected and cultured with the submerged plant (Hydrilla verticillata) and emerged plant (Scripus triqueter). Then the sorption and desorption experiments were performed, and physicochemical properties, P fractions, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) characteristics were evaluated.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), one of the most aggressive malignancies, ranks as the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Emerging evidence indicates that RNA N6-methyladenosine (m6A) plays a critical role in tumor progression. However, the biological function of YTHDF1 in HCC remains unclear.

In recent years, with the expansion of the Weining county in the northeast of Caohai wetland, the construction of a new port in the north, and the large-scale development of cultivated land in the east, land use patterns in lakeshore areas have changed. These changes have affected the state of lake shores water bodies in complex ways, resulting in varying degrees of local water pollution. To explore the distribution and transformation characteristics of water chemistry and heavy metals in different areas of a water body under the influence of different land uses, especially the interactions between water chemical factors and heavy metals in different areas of a water body, this study used Circos diagrams, originally used in biological genetic analysis, to visualize these interactions.

Article Synopsis
  • Circ_VCAN is a novel circular RNA that is found to be upregulated in radioresistant glioma tissues and negatively correlates with miR-1183 expression.
  • Research indicates that circ_VCAN promotes glioma cell proliferation, migration, and invasion while inhibiting apoptosis, particularly after irradiation.
  • Circ_VCAN appears to act as a sponge for miR-1183, suggesting it plays a significant role as an oncogene and contributes to the radioresistance of glioma cells.

Polymorphisms in Disrupted-in-Schizophrenia 1 (DISC1) and Neuregulin 1 (NRG1) might be associated with schizophrenia; however, the conclusions of relevant studies were inconsistent across different ethnic populations. This population-based case-control study was carried out to determine whether polymorphisms in these two genes could be associated with schizophrenia in the Chinese population. A case-control study of 248 schizophrenia patients and 236 controls was performed with the Sequenom MassARRAY platform.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how certain DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) gene variants are linked to the risk and characteristics of prostate cancer in Chinese men.
  • Researchers conducted a case-control analysis involving 155 prostate cancer patients and 155 healthy controls, finding significant genotype frequency differences for the DNMT1 and DNMT3B gene variants.
  • The findings suggest that specific genotypes (rs16999593CT/CC and rs2424908CT/CC) are associated with a lower risk of developing prostate cancer and are linked to lower Gleason scores.
