Circulating levels of 3-carboxy-4-methyl-5-propyl-2-furanpropionic acid (CMPF), a metabolite derived from dietary furan fatty acids primarily found in marine food sources, have long been recognized as biomarkers for fish intake. However, elevated CMPF levels are also observed in patients with type 2 diabetes or chronic kidney disease and in healthy people associated with a reduced infection risk, suggesting potential bioactive roles in metabolism and immune function. Yet, the possible causal mechanisms behind these associations are unknown.

Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is an evolving tool for comprehensive proteomic analyses across tissues. Despite the widespread use of LC-MS in dermatology, full-thickness human skin remains challenging to analyse. The skin extracellular matrix (ECM) presents two major obstacles: the extensive crosslinking complicates protein extraction and the high abundance of ECM proteins can mask lower-abundance proteins, reducing identification numbers.

Communication and interaction with public authorities and healthcare professionals in Denmark primarily go through digital self-service platforms, requiring diverse skills and device access. In this article, we describe how senior citizens in Denmark handle and make sense of public digitalization through different forms of digital support. Through an ethnographic study of community-led initiatives of digital support, we highlight how senior citizens find socio-technical ways of managing digital obligations and argue that citizens' digital agency in day-to-day interactions with public digitalization relies heavily on distributed socio-material relations.

The concept of parity-time symmetry has firmly established non-Hermiticity as a versatile degree of freedom on a variety of physical platforms. In general, the non-Hermitian dynamics of open systems are perceived to be inextricably linked to complex-valued potentials facilitating the local attenuation and coherent amplification in wave mechanics. Along these lines, time reversal symmetry is associated with a complex conjugation of the potential landscape, in essence swapping gain and loss.

This study investigates the phenomenon that, in contrast to amylopectin-rich starch granules, high amylose starch (HAS) granules typically exhibit high hydrolytic resistance manifested as low density of enzyme attack sites on the starch granule surface. However, among the various types of examined HAS granules, we identified differences in enzymatic resistance. We associated this effect as a result of variations in specific rate of the enzymatic reaction, with intermediate affinity leading to the highest enzymatic efficacy characteristic for the Sabatier principle.

Unlabelled: In mammalian and human life, it is important that the immune system defends against microorganisms. Although there is a huge overlap, innate cells are good against bacteria, whereas T cells are good against viruses, mainly because of antibody production via T helper and B lymphocytes. Toll-like receptor 5 (TLR5) is a regulator; when it is highly expressed, T cells are inhibited, and innate cells are favored.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a ubiquitous polymer with a lack of viable waste management solutions besides mechanical recycling, incineration, and landfilling. Herein, we demonstrate a chemical upcycling of PET waste into materials for CO capture via aminolysis. The aminolysis reaction products-a bis-aminoamide (BAETA) and oligomers-exhibit high CO capture capacity up to 3.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are essential regulators of gene expression, yet few comprehensive databases exist for miRNA expression in non-model species, limiting our ability to characterize their roles in gene regulation, development, and disease. Similarly, isomiRs - length and sequence isoforms of canonical miRNAs with potentially altered regulatory targets and functions - have received even less attention in non-model species, including the horse, leaving a critical gap in our understanding of their biological significance. To address these challenges, we developed an open-source, containerized pipeline for identifying and quantifying miRNAs and isomiRs (FARmiR: Framework for Analysis and Refinement of miRNAs), and an associated interactive browser (AIMEE: Animal IsomiR and MiRNA Expression Explorer).

Regulated protein degradation by Clp proteases is a highly conserved post-translational control mechanism in bacteria. In Staphylococcus aureus, the ClpXP complex targets the peptidoglycan hydrolase Sle1, maintaining a tightly regulated balance between peptidoglycan biosynthesis and hydrolysis, which is required to ensure proper cell splitting without compromising cell integrity. β-lactams antibiotics disturb this balance, leading to their bactericidal effects.

Obesity has been associated with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), but the evidence is inconclusive. We examined the association between genetically determined adiposity and four common NHL subtypes: diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), follicular lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and marginal zone lymphoma, using eight genome-wide association studies of European ancestry (N = 10,629 cases, 9505 controls) and constructing polygenic scores for body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for BMI (WHRadjBMI). Higher genetically determined BMI was associated with an increased risk of DLBCL [odds ratio (OR) per standard deviation (SD) = 1.

Surface modification of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) to facilitate interactions with high pI proteins is a strategy used to enhance 3D PCL scaffolds for tissue engineering applications. The approach of the current study was to firstly optimise the surface modification on 2D films and then apply to 3D scaffolds. Melt-pressed PCL films were grafted with 2-aminoethyl methacrylate gamma radiation induced grafting to introduce amine functional groups to the substrate surfaces.

Introduction: Parasitic nematodes are prevalent in fish populations. The parasites are pathogenic but depress host responses, which limit clearance of the pathogens from the invasion sites. We hypothesized that one of several control strategies, which could augment protection, is immunization of the fish host with parasite antigens prior to live pathogen exposure.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) plays a key role in metabolic homeostasis through its thermogenic effects and the secretion of regulatory molecules. Here we report that RAP250 haploinsufficiency stimulates BAT in mice, thus contributing to a decrease in fat accumulation. Local in vivo AAV-mediated RAP250 silencing in BAT reduces body weight and fat mass and enhances glucose oxidation, thereby indicating that RAP250 participates in the regulation of BAT metabolic activity.

Background: Total body water (TBW) is commonly used to derive estimates of body composition. The deuterium oxide dose-to-mother (DTM) technique for measuring breast milk intake requires an estimate of infant TBW. The DTM calculation employs a prediction equation for estimating infant TBW from body weight (TBW), but the general validity of this equation is unknown.
