Understanding PrEP adherence is key in the formulation of HIV prevention strategies; however, measurement of adherence can be challenging. We compared multiple adherence measures in a two-year study of young Kenyan women at high risk of HIV acquisition. Among 289 participants, concordance between electronic adherence monitoring (EAM) and tenofovir diphosphate (TFV-DP) in dried blood spots ranged from 57 to 72% depending on selected thresholds.

Background: We assessed cumulative antiretroviral exposure-using tenofovir diphosphate (TFV-DP) in dried blood spots (DBS)-in persons with HIV (PWH) receiving tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)-based antiretroviral therapy (ART) as single-tablet regimens (STR) or multiple-tablet regimens (MTR).
Methods: Blood for DBS was prospectively collected in PWH on TDF during 1144 person visits (n = 523). Linear mixed-effects models, adjusted for baseline characteristics, were used to compare TFV-DP in STR versus MTR.

Background: Adherence to once daily oral preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention can be challenging for men who have sex with men (MSM) with substance use. View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Lower antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence is associated with higher systemic inflammation in virally suppressed people with HIV (PWH); however, previous studies have mostly relied on subjective adherence measures and have not assessed this association by disease stage upon ART initiation.
Methods: In the Monitoring Early Treatment Adherence study, adherence was monitored electronically in real time among adult, treatment-naïve PWH in Uganda and South Africa who initiated tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine/efavirenz during early-stage (CD4 > 350 cells/µL) or late-stage (CD4 < 200 cells/µL) disease. Participants who achieved viral suppression (< 400 copies/mL) at 6 months and remained suppressed after 12 months were analysed.

This occurs through a pulmonary inflammatory response characterized by increased recruitment of immune cells into the airspace, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and pro-inflammatory lipid mediators. Conventional invasive diagnostic imaging techniques do not adequately resolve complex Type B and C coronary lesions, which present unique challenges, require personalized treatment and result in worsened patient outcomes. These lesions are often excluded from large-scale non-invasive clinical trials and there does not exist a validated approach to characterize hemodynamic quantities and guide percutaneous intervention for such lesions. This work identifies key biomarkers that differentiate complex Type B and C lesions from simple Type A lesions by introducing and validating a coronary angiography-based computational fluid dynamic (CFD-CA) framework for intracoronary assessment in complex lesions at ultrahigh resolution.

Background: Incomplete antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, even if sufficient to maintain viral suppression, is associated with enhanced inflammation in persons with HIV (PWH). However, its clinical implications remain unknown.
Methods: PWH enrolled in the Swiss HIV Cohort Study without a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) who initiated ART between 2003 and 2018 and had viral suppression (<50 copies/mL) for ≥6 months were evaluated.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by SARS-CoV-2, an emerging virus that utilizes host proteins ACE2 and TMPRSS2 as entry factors. Understanding the factors affecting the pattern and levels of expression of these genes is important for deeper understanding of SARS-CoV-2 tropism and pathogenesis. Here we explore the role of genetics and co-expression networks in regulating these genes in the airway, through the analysis of nasal airway transcriptome data from 695 children.

Different collision-activated dissociation (CAD) methods were evaluated for their effectiveness at distinguishing several ionized isomeric aromatic compounds by using a linear quadrupole ion trap/orbitrap mass spectrometer. The compounds were ionized by using atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) with carbon disulfide solvent in the positive ion mode to generate stable molecular ions with limited fragmentation. They were subjected to CAD in the linear quadrupole ion trap (ITCAD) and in an octupole collision cell (medium-energy collision-activated dissociation, MCAD; also known as HCD).
