Decreased medial cheek fat volume during aging leads to loss of a youthful facial shape. Increasing facial volume by methods such as adipose-derived stem cell (ASC) injection can produce facial rejuvenation. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) can increase adipogenesis in subcutaneous fat by modulating cilia on ASCs, which is accompanied by increased HSP70 and decreased NF-κB expression.

Bionanotechnology Research Center, Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB), 125 Gwahak-ro, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, 34141, Republic of Korea; Department of Nanobiotechnology, KRIBB School of Biotechnology, University of Science and Technology 125 Gwahak-ro, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon,

Since the outbreak of the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) at the end of 2019, the spread of the virus has posed a significant threat to public health and the global economy. This work proposed a one-step, dual-structure-switching aptamer-mediated signal amplification cascade for rapid and sensitive detection of the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein. This system consisted of two DNA aptamers with structure-switching functionality and fuel DNA, where a cascade of strand hybridization and displacement triggered fluorescence generation and signal amplification.

Bacteriophages, also known as phages, are viruses that replicate in bacteria and archaea. Phages were initially discovered as antimicrobial agents, and they have been used as therapeutic agents for bacterial infection in a process known as "phage therapy." Recently, phages have been investigated as functional nanomaterials in a variety of areas, as they can function not only as therapeutic agents but also as biosensors and tissue regenerative materials.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates focused ultrasound (FUS) as a method to non-invasively deliver gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) across the blood-retinal barrier (BRB) for treating retinal disorders.
  • Researchers optimized FUS parameters to ensure effective delivery while preventing retinal damage, demonstrating the successful transportation of AuNPs and other substances to the retina in a rodent model.
  • Findings suggest that smaller AuNPs are more effective at penetrating the retinal layers, paving the way for new non-invasive therapies in the treatment of retinal diseases.

Background And Objectives: The influence of the intracranial pressure field must be discussed with the development of a single-element transducer for low-intensity transcranial focused ultrasound because the skull plays a significant role in blocking and dispersing ultrasound wave propagation. Ultrasound propagation is mainly affected by the structure and acoustic properties of the skull; thus, we aimed to investigate the impact of simplifying the acoustic properties of the skull on the simulation of the transcranial pressure field to present guidance for efficient skull modeling in full-wave simulations.

Materials And Methods: We constructed a three-dimensional computational model for ultrasound transmission with the same structure but varying acoustic properties of the skull.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has a high incidence in infectious hospitals and communities, highlighting the need for early on-site detection due to its resistance to methicillin antibiotics. The present study introduces a highly sensitive detection system for mecA, a crucial methicillin marker, utilizing an RCA-based isothermal exponential amplification reaction. The G-quadruplex-based isothermal exponential amplification reaction (GQ-EXPAR) method designs probes to establish G-quadruplex secondary structures incorporating thioflavin T for fluorescence.

April 2024

College of Pharmacy and Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, Hanyang University, 55 Hanyangdaehak-ro, Ansan 15588, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • Lycii Radicis Cortex (LRC) is a traditional East Asian medicine known for its multiple health benefits, such as being antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, but its effects on muscle atrophy had not been investigated before this study.
  • In these experiments, researchers tested LRC extract (LRCE) on muscle atrophy induced by dexamethasone (DEX) using C2C12 myotubes and mice, employing techniques like immunofluorescence and Western blotting.
  • The findings revealed that LRCE improved muscle cell health by enhancing cell size and mitochondrial function, boosting protein synthesis, and decreasing markers of muscle degradation in both myotubes and DEX-treated mice, indicating its potential for treating muscle atrophy.

Surface Modification of Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) Intervertebral Fusion Implant Using Polydopamine Coating for Improved Bioactivity.

Bioengineering (Basel)

March 2024

Medical Device Development Center, Osong Medical Innovation Foundation, 123 Osongsaengmyung-ro, Osong-eub, Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju-si 28160, Chungbuk, Republic of Korea.

The occurrence of bone diseases has been increasing rapidly, in line with the aging population. A representative spinal fusion material, polyetheretherketone (PEEK), is advantageous in this regard as it can work in close proximity to the elastic modulus of cancellous bone. However, if it is used without surface modification, the initial osseointegration will be low due to lack of bioactivity, resulting in limitations in surgical treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Prostate cancer and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are hard to treat, with existing therapies targeting specific markers but limited options for some types, like small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma.
  • This study examined the natural compound vitekwangin B, which showed promise in reducing cancer cell viability and inducing cell death in prostate cancer and NSCLC cells without harming healthy liver cells.
  • Vitekwangin B works by lowering the levels of the ANO1 protein, making it a potential new approach for cancer treatment and could help improve outcomes for patients facing drug resistance in these cancers.

Article Synopsis
  • * After applying FUS, the expression of tight junction proteins (TJPs) like ZO-1 and occludin initially decreased but returned to normal within 24 hours; conversely, caveola formation increased significantly after FUS treatment and peaked at 4 hours before decreasing.
  • * The findings suggest that FUS alters BBB permeability through both transport mechanisms, and optimal timing for drug delivery should consider which pathway the drug utilizes to cross the BBB.

Nialamide is a non-selective monoamine oxidase inhibitor that was widely used as an antidepressant. However, it has been prohibited for decades in the depressive medicine market due to the adverse hepatotoxic side effects. The re-use of drugs that have been withdrawn from the market represents a promising approach for the development of novel incrementally modified drugs and, in this context, ionizing radiation can serve as a powerful tool for producing new drug candidates.

Tissue Eng Regen Med

January 2024

Medical Device Development Center, Daegu-Gyeongbuk Medical Innovation Foundation, 80, Chembok-ro, Dong-gu, Daegu, 41061, Republic of Korea.

Background: Collagen is a key component of connective tissue and has been frequently used in the fabrication of medical devices for tissue regeneration.
