This study investigates the effect of various surfactants, such as Lecithin, Span 80, and Tween 80, on the physicochemical properties of biopolymer films fabricated from fucoidan extracted from brown seaweed and gelatin. The fucoidan was extracted from brown seaweed (Padina boergesenii) using a modified formalin and ethanol precipitation method to obtain a sulfated polysaccharide and combined with gelatin to make composite films by casting method. Surfactants were introduced to enhance oil (juniper berry oil) dispersion and modify the film's characteristics. The tensile strength, thickness, gloss value, haze value, and transmittance of the film sample increased with the addition of essential oil and surfactant. The SEM analysis revealed that Tween 80 fabricated smooth and defect-free biocomposite films. The XRD analysis revealed the semi-crystalline structure, and FTIR confirmed functional group interactions. The TGA analysis indicated a decrease in the thermal stability of oil-loaded film samples. The biodegradability study of fabricated films in natural soil and seawater suggested that the film without oil degrades more quickly compared to oil-loaded samples. These findings highlight the critical role of surfactants in the development and use of biopolymer films for food packaging.

This study explores the use of plant-derived polysaccharides to develop bio-based films for food-packaging applications. A film-forming solution composed of Prosopis nigra biopolymer (PN-B), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and glycerol was optimized by central composite design (CCD), resulting in two formulations: P1 and P11. The films were subsequently functionalized with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized via chemical and biological routes.

A one-pot strategy was developed to fabricate a strong and ductile elastomer composed of chitin nanocrystals and poly(deep eutectic solvent) (ChNC/PDES), based on a dual-network structure formed through glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)associated modification, polymerization and crosslinking. This approach enables the integrated pretreatment, chemical modification, and nanodispersion of chitin within a lactic acid/choline chloride deep eutectic solvent (DES) system. Whereafter, the ultraviolet initiated polymerization of GMA with ChNC and DES components produced a homogeneous elastomer with a maximum tensile strength of 4.

Environmentally friendly food packaging has emerged as a viable strategy to replace traditional plastic films. In this study, eugenol Pickering emulsion was constructed with konjac glucomannan (KGM) and tragacanth gum (GT) as stabilizers, and was introduced into the KGM/chitosan (CS) composite film by electrostatic action to develop a new type of active packaging film. Interfacial characterization revealed optimal emulsion stability at a 1:5 KGM-to-GT mass ratio.

Guar gum (GG), a natural galactomannan polysaccharide derived from Cyamopsis tetragonoloba, is gaining popularity as a biodegradable and environmentally friendly packaging material. With the growing demand for sustainable food packaging, stricter regulations prioritize cost efficiency, consumer safety, and environmental impact. It exhibits strong potential for use in packaging films and coatings, offering barrier properties that slow down fruit ripening and reduce post-harvest quality loss.
