The iliopsoas plane (IP) is a fascial plane deep to the iliopsoas complex and is the target of several novel ultrasound-guided analgesic interventions for hip. Currently, limited information is known about its parameters. From the pelvic magnetic resonance (MR) images of an adult Eastern Asian population (n = 49), the IP width, depth, and needle-beam angle in the axial plane immediately caudal to the level of indirect tendon of rectus femoris (RF) were found to be 10.7 ± 1.6 mm, 48.5 ± 15.5 mm, and 84.2 ± 8.2 degrees, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in the age categories for IP width, and older patients seemed to have wider IP. Our data may provide applications for the technical modification of ultrasound-guided iliopsoas plane block (IPB) in acute hip pain management and the future development of ultrasound-guided single-needle-entry radiofrequency neuroablation in chronic hip pain management.

This article reviews the use of ultrasound in various hip interventions, including intra-articular injections, iliopsoas and trochanteric bursa treatments, lateral femoral cutaneous nerve blocks, and interventions for adductor and hamstring tendinopathies. In recent years, iliopsoas plane block as a new type of regional nerve block technique has gradually gained attention; however, its actual effect on analgesia and motor function preservation in postoperative hip arthroplasty patients has not been fully verified. Because of this, we summarize the experience of 10 cases of successful application of iliopsoas plane block (IPB) combined with lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) block for postoperative pain management after hip arthroplasty, to provide useful reference and inspiration for clinical practice.

Determination of hip muscle paths and their moment arms is crucial in subject-specific musculoskeletal modeling. Existing approaches, including via-point, obstacle-set, and others, cannot estimate a smooth path for biarticular muscles such as iliopsoas. This study proposed a modified convex wrapping algorithm based on subject-specific medical imaging to prevent the predicted path from penetrating its underlying bone geometries.
